Clever, sarcastic books just aren't what they were back when folks named Joseph Heller (no, not that Joseph Heller Kurt Vonnegut and Thomas Pynchon sat behind typewriters hammering out irreverent, anti-establishment tracts about the bygone days of World War II.

Dearest Bacon,
If you really could write, you wouldn't need all those pictures and sounds. But hey, thanks for your comments on the book. You definitely have some issues. Give me a ring next time you're in Manhattan, or Brooklyn, or Queens, or Seattle, L.A., or Paris, or wherever the fuck I'm living. We'll do lunch. Probably Brooklyn.

Irony with Soul: Dave Eggers Writes the Hippest of Memoirs
by Tamara Straus Dave Eggers, the 29-year-old author of one of this season's hottest books, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," thinks people do not understand the word irony. Sitting in the San Francisco office where his ascending career as a writer and editor began, he explains: "Nobody knows what it means. And it is used to describe, well if somebody uses footnotes, that's called irony; and if somebody has a character address the reader out of character, that's called irony; if someone's sarcastic, it's irony; if someone's nihilistic, it's irony. I think people have gotten really lazy about the definition."
Eggers is defensive on the subject of irony because of what it can connote moral turpitude, coy escapism and, in the case of literature, a cleverness that grates and because it has been used to describe almost all of his literary endeavors. Might, his defunct San Francisco-based Gen X zine best known for falsifying the death of child TV star Adam Rich, was hailed by Newsweek as "funny, knowing and wryly on-target." McSweeney's, the chic literary quarterly he now runs out of Brooklyn, is, to Eggers' dismay, constantly being described as ironic. And his first book, an anti-memoir about raising his kid brother after the death of his parents, has received the same adjectival treatment ("goofy and intensely ironic" are the words Vince Passaro used in his Harper's Bazaar review).

    33. The Dave Eggers Show - BCM - Spring 2002

    http://www.bc.edu/publications/bcm/spring_2002/lindenlane.html
It's Valentine's Day night, that bastion of Hallmark sweethearts and suburban roses, and Gasson 100 is crammed with the young. Their abs are visible and flat, their nose rings shine, they wear hip orange knit caps with pompoms utterly ridiculous on anybody over 25, and they travel in packsnone of this paired-off stuff. Ten minutes late, and to frantic ap- plause, author Dave Eggers lopes into the room, taller than you'd think from the jacket photo on his wildly popular book, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (2000), and definitely buff, in jeans and a brown sweater over a drooping brown T-shirt, wearing scuffed brown oxfords spattered with white paint, a subtle shadow on his jaw.
Boyish and shy, he hangs his curly-mopped head, then drinks from a bottle of water. Can he bethis celebrity of almost two yearsself-conscious? Not in that postmodern self-conscious way (where you're conscious of being self-conscious and what other way is there to be?) but the way one of us would feel if we wrote a book about the time of our deepest anguish and then had to face our readers? "It's unusually cold, isn't it?" he asks the crowd.
"I didn't bring a coat." Pause. "Anyone have a coat?" A Dickens orphan with a gamin's charm, Dave Eggers knows how to work a room.

    Nick Hornby on Dave Eggers
    Sunday February 16, 2003
    The Observer

'I met Dave shortly after A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius was published in the US, and since then our paths have crossed several times: he wrote a story for Speaking With the Angel, a charity anthology I put together; I wrote one for McSweeney's 10; he published 31 Songs (as 'Songbook') through McSweeney's in the US. At the moment, D.V. DeVincentis and I are adapting AHWOSG for the screen. 'I think the reason he's managed to gather such an impressive array of talent for the various McSweeney's projects is that he has an apparently inexhaustible fund of great ideas. Writers are always being asked to do things they don't particularly want to do, but McSweeney's things are invariably attractive, and you know that at the end of it all there will be this amazing-looking object; gallingly, not only is Dave one of the best writers around, but he's one of the best graphic designers. Everyone who's seen a copy of "Songbook" wants to own one immediately, even if they don't want to read the thing.

You Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers Jackass is a television programme, successful enough to spawn a film, in which young Americans do ostentatiously stupid or dangerous stunts: skateboarding down a stairwell, for instance, or riding a pogo stick naked across sheet ice. Much of the action of Dave Eggers's first novel (following the great success of his crafty memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) has a disconcertingly similar flavour, as the narrator Will Chmielewski and his best friend from childhood, Justin - invariably known as Hand - try to get rid of $80,000.

    WEDNESDAY
The light was screaming through the windows, intent and wild, and I opened my portal's eyelid a quick few inches and we were coming at Africa at 300 mph, the ocean below striking the coast of Dakar with desperation. The neat shadow of the plane jumbled over the city's shoreline, the buildings glowing in tan and white and standing still as the water and wind came to them with all the world's fury-and then died. We were somewhere else. What were we doing here? We had no idea. Hand was awake. "Senegal," I said.

    Dave Eggers on isolation
"But dropping out of touch is still possible. It's so easy. It doesn't take long, just about anywhere, to get away from phones, etc. Five miles outside of any city, usually. In Iceland, which is a prosperous country, a lot of the roads get really sketchy just outside of Reykjavik, and there's still only one road through the interior of the island, and when you're out there it's about 13 hours of insanely rough and winding driving without any sign of life you're out of touch. You go through landscapes that could be Hawaii, then Arizona, then Arctic tundra, then Scotland, and there isn't a gas station for maybe 400 miles. Don't ever believe anyone who says that the world's been explored, there's nothing left to see, all that. I mean, have you driven through Wyoming? Wyoming just makes you weep. We're so lucky to have it, all of it."
