With toungue firmly in cheek, she touches on the silliness inherent in modern living through a number of vehicles, ranging from condom-based advice columns to hair-cut strikes to born again virgins. Also, the work is peppered with a number of well-placed and very telling pop-culture references (hey, I'm a big fan of anything using Axl Rose as a cultural icon) that stretch the stories, making them accessible to readers outside Eidus' Bronx/NY setting. However, while some of the stories, such as "Celibacy Club" and "Teen Idol" really bit at the core of modern society, each loaded with extremely insightful comedy and theme, most of the other stories do not weld character, theme, and plot as tightly. While still providing a very enjoyable read, her tales of urban mermaids and vampires, of writers in love, of a wacky Jimmy Dean just seem to fall a little short after the triumphs of wit and insight she accomplishes in a very few of them.

THE CELIBACY CLUB by Janice Eidus
City Lights February 1997; $9.95 softcover 199 pp; ISBN 0-87286-322-0
This is a group of short stories that looks at life in the 90s, at our culture, and our present-day obsessions. Among the stories are: Elvis living in the Bronx and dressed as a Hasidic Jew; a woman who falls madly in love with a Nautilus exercise machine; Barbie goes to group therapy because her publicist says so; a young girl makes friends with a mermaid; what happens to a teen actor after his TV show gets cancelled; a male writing student has a sexual relationship with his female teacher; one night, in bed, she suddenly dies because of a weak heart; a male screenwriter starts fooling around, only to find out, by accident, that his wife is also fooling around. The title story is about a club/therapy club for people who chosen to be celibate. I really enjoyed this book. The stories are very easy to read, and they're the sort of situations that could happen to anyone. The author does a very good job at putting the reader right in the middle of each story. This is well worth the reader's time. Reviewed by Paul Lappen 8/15/98 Order this book from Amazon.com Books

No sex, please.
A new collection of stories about love asks: Does abstinence make the heart grow fonder?
The Celibacy Club
By Janice Eidus. City Lights Books, 216 pages. $9.95. By Randall Lyman IS THERE
anyone out there who has never, despairing or just fed up with the whole sordid mess, solemnly sworn off sex forever? I thought not. So you will immediately be intrigued, as I was, by the very title of The Celibacy Club. Then I read the back cover, which hails the author's "wildly funny, bawdy, and poignant" exploration of "our contemporary obsessions with sex" as if these obsessions (or explorations) were something new, and, as quickly as I usually swear back on, I thought: How many more times do we need to hear that we're all sexually obsessed, repressed, oppressed, frustrated, perverted, and just plain confused? Why, I've been told a hundred times! The latest, hippest maven of modern love to tell us yet once more is two-time O. Henry Prize winner Janice Eidus, whose new collection of short stories continues the themes of her first collection and two novels. The term "modern love," however, like "modern relationships," is something of an oxymoron, since the words "love" and "relationship" imply connection and constancy, whereas our whole modern American sensibility is one of detachment: glib association, superficial reference, and especially irony, which, sadly, too often passes for a fresh perspective these days just because it's hip. And what could be more ephemeral than hipness? Except maybe modern love. How ironic.

Moon River
By Janice Eidus
In the moonlight, moonshine, moondog, mooning light... Actually, it's daytime, sun round and hot, but the air feels moony. Like wax, hot, moon all around me. A hot moon might scald me; a hot moon might melt me. I'm on my back, on a park bench. I remember a moon song: Audrey Hepburn singing "Moon River... Wider Than A Mile..." I wish I were Audrey: gaunt, huge-eyed, strumming gently on an incongruous guitar, demanding my bacon and eggs among diamonds. I do hear her singing. No, not her, but there is someone. Across the park, even with my eyes fully closed and my ears semi-closed, a guitar and a lone woman's voice come drifting. Vaguely, if I strain, I can make out the words. Is it worth it? Yes, it must be; I'm looking for clues. In the sixties, a male voice would have been raucous, loud, bemoaning the Bomb and segregation, and I'd have taken my clues from there... But it's not the sixties; nor is it the seventies, when punks ruled and violence was cool and he would have wailed,
Baby I will smash you
In the face!
