Janice Eidus. City Lights Books, 1997. 199pp. $9.95 Amy Christopher "If Elvis is alive and well and masquerading as a Hasidic Jew in the Bronx, well, then, anything is possible, and I do mean anything," writes Janice Eidus in the first of nineteen unpredictable stories that comprise The Celibacy Club. This eclectic and immediate collection spiritedly delves into many of our nation's collective preoccupations and emerges with surreal tales, pairing fantastic characters with everyday New York life. As we spin from a matzoh-munching Elvis sighting to the sensual attraction of a ping-pong master/vampire, Barbie emerging in the 90's at a group therapy session and the inner torments of a phone-sex operator, the ridiculous is skillfully made relevant. Twice winner of the prestigious O. Henry Award, Eidus wields charged humor and unanticipated poignancy to create manic snapshots of contemporary American obsessions.

[ TIKKUN'S 15TH ] 15th Anniversary Offerings
W e live in a blind-siding, head-spinning world that undergoes cataclysmic shifts without regard to press time. Such is the situation that we have found ourselves in for this issue of Tikkun . This past summer we had asked a number of young and important novelists and writers to contribute thoughtful essays on a Tikkun , or tikkun olam , theme, all in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of Tikkun 's founding. That issue was designated for September/October. But the essays were so powerful that we decided to split them into two issues, some appearing in November/December, which would then become an anniversary issue as well.
But then the events of September 11, 2001, like they did for most Americans, changed everything that had come before and reoriented everyone's thinking on what was to follow. Synagogues are now faced with both the political and moral decision of whether to allow streetside dancing on Simcha Torah. Is it unseemly to dance on such dark days, surrounded by so much immediate collective death, even when the dancing honors an ancient ritual and celebrates, for Jews, the ultimate book of life and continuity?
Tikkun is faced with a similar choice. Should we at this time once more celebrate our 15th year anniversary when the focus of everyone's attention, and most of the pages in this issue, are properly and poignantly devoted to the aftermath of the terrorist attack on this country? Is this the time to dance, celebrate, and self-congratulate, or is this more appropriately a period of mourning and national grief, a time only to reflect and sit with all the sadness?

STORYTELLING EIDUS: It starts with two words: "the hook." That's what every creative writing teacher, editor, how-to book will tell you. "You have to have a hook." It sounds like trite advice, until you come across a short-story writer like Janice Eidus. She's a pro at snagging even the most casual reader from the get-go. Her new collection, The Celibacy Club, is a delight on many levels; but it all begins with the first sentence: "I met Elvis for the first time in the deli across the street from the elevated line on White Plains Road and Pelham Parkway in the Bronx." "In second grade, my secret fantasy was that I would be transformed into a mermaid." " 'He comes in. He goes out. He comes in and he goes out. That's all,' the Gypsy said." Our all-time favorite, though, comes from the deliciously titled "Pandora's Box": "Pandora was a phone sex worker. She worked in an office in a dingy building in SoHo." From there, the story unfurls from the gritty, workaday life of an anonymous city dweller to an intense character study of horrific proportions. Eidus has twice earned the prestigious O. Henry Prize for short fiction, as well as a Pushcart Prize, and the 19 stories reprinted in
