  • PART ONE ``A child, more than all other gifts
That earth can offer to declining man,
Brings hope with it, and forward-looking thoughts.''
    WORDSWORTH.
    PART ONE
    CHAPTER I
war times , to live in a rollicking fashion, and keep a jolly Christmas, Whitsun, and Easter tide. Among the members of his church there was one young man, a little older than himself, with whom he had long lived in such close friendship that it was the custom of their Lantern Yard brethren to call them David and Jonathan ``I must have slept,'' said Silas. Then, after a pause, he added, ``Or I must have had another visitation like that which you have all seen me under, so that the thief must have come and gone while I was not in the body, but out of the body. But, I say again, search me and my dwelling, for I have been nowhere else.'' The search was made, and it ended in William Dane's finding the well-known bag, empty, tucked behind the chest of drawers in Silas's chamber! On this William exhorted his friend to confess, and not to hide his sin any longer. Silas turned a look of keen reproach on him, and said, ``William, for nine years that we have gone in and out together, have you ever known me tell a lie? But God will clear me.''

GEORGE ELIOT
"The strongest principle of growth lies in the human choice." Birthplace

Warwickshire, England
Education
She attended school until the age of 16.
Other jobs
Journalist, Westminster Review
Did you know? She translated (anonymously) Spinoza's Ethics; it had a great influence on English philosophy. Critical verdict When her identity was finally revealed (critics at first believing her to be a clergyman or clergyman's wife), critical reaction was torn between condemning intellectual pretension in a woman and recognising her accomplishment: domestic realism, moral urgency and deep reflection. In 1859, Adam Bede was attacked as the "vile outpourings of a lewd woman's mind" and withdrawn from libraries, but by the end of her life she was recognised as the greatest living English novelist, particularly admired by Turgenev and Henry James (and Queen Victoria). In 1883 Blackwood's Magazine declared that "Middlemarch gives George Eliot the chiefest claim to stand by the side of Shakespeare". Her reputation waned briefly but was reignited by praise from Virginia Woolf (Middlemarch was "one of the few English novels written for grown-up people") and FR Leavis.

Her life and works were often controversial, but the personal letters of the 19th-century English novelist known as George Eliot were often viewed as disappointingly dull, says Prof. Rosemarie Bodenheimer (English). Bodenheimer, however, was so fascinated by them she wrote a biography of Mary Ann Evans, the woman behind the male pseudonym. "The care with which Eliot constructed her self-representations has led many readers to reject her correspondence as inexpressive," said Bodenheimer. "But it seemed clear to me that there was a war going on within her as she tried to compose her emotions and I had to explore that battle." The Real Life of Mary Ann Evans: George Eliot, Her Letters and Fiction is the first book to demonstrate how the tensions in Evans' life fueled her writing career, according to Bodenheimer. Eliot's novels, Bodenheimer says, resonate with the struggle of being both ambitious and female in Victorian culture. By reading her letters alongside her novels, stories and poems, Bodenheimer found she was able to define the personal paradoxes that helped shape Eliot's fictional characters and narrative style. "Much writing on Eliot talks about her as an intellectual, as someone who had ideas - and she was that - but I'm talking about her as someone whose ideas were also part of an emotional economy and inseparable from it," said Bodenheimer. "I've offered a look at the way her mind actually worked, rather than at her abstract ideas."

The Writing of Marian Evans (George Eliot) Under name George Eliot, Marian Evans (England 1819-80) wrote novels Adam Bede The Mill on the Floss Silas Marner Romola ... Felix Holt the Radical and Middlemarch on net including as here to Princeton, and Daniel Deronda to Nagoya. Woman wronged is a common turn but heroines predominate. The settings are remote from contemporary urban life, which is part of the entertainment. The timeless human issues boldly acted out with commentary are of the largest kind - gender, justice, love, morality, peoples, politics, religion. Romola , Daniel Deronda (1876) and Middlemarch (1871) are massive works. Romola centres on the life of a young woman, Romola, in turbulent 15th century Florence. It is replete with renaissance concerns and historical figures Savonarola and Machiavelli. Daniel Deronda is set in Evans's time and includes attention to London Jewish circles and ideas, also the disastrous marriage of Gwendolen. Middlemarch

53. Middlemarch
An online guide to george eliot and the novel, with sections on critical reception, style, characterization, publication history, and biography.
http://etext.virginia.edu/english/eliot/middlemarch/
George Eliot is among the foremost writers of her time. In spite of her gender, her looks, and her eccentric beliefs, she earned a prominent place within the Victorian literary canon. Middlemarch falls near the end of her life and career, and it clinched her financial and popular success. In researching Middlemarch, we uncovered an almost unfathomable amount of information. Middlemarch 's scope as a novel is unquestionably vast; so too is the writing on it. Therefore, this project is intended only as an introduction into the world of Middlemarch commentary and criticism. Genevieve Davis and Diana Block look into the novel's immediate critical reception. Abby Hertzmark describes the development of the 8-part novel and the history of its publication. Jennifer Kremer gives us insights into the mind and life of the soft-spoken genius, Mary Anne Evans. Each contributed an annotated bibliography for their own subject, and Bryan Wagner and Dot Gribbin examined and annotated more current critical works. Davis designed the web page and assisted Wagner and Gribbin in putting the completed project online. Please feel free to email any one of us with questions regarding individual pages.
