Vesta (December) Book of the Month AWAKENING OSIRIS The Egyptian Book of the Dead Translated by NORMANDI ELLIS Phanes Press 1988 (PO Box 6114, Grand Rapids, MI 49516, USA) This literary gem is much, much more than a "new and improved" translation of the Coffin Texts, or The Going Forth By Day (Egyptian Book of the Dead). It is a mystic and poetic interpretation of great personal depth and collective application. Even the Author's brief introduction to the book reveals a wealth of historical and spiritual understanding: Osiris, the god of the dead, is a green god, an image of the seed waiting in the dark to burst forth into renewal. His symbol was the growing corn. His death and rebirth illuminated the path from darkness to light, from unconsciousness to enlightenment. In that light, I called this book AWAKENING OSIRIS for I thought of it as a call to consciousness and spiritual awakening. We are all Osirises. [P. 15] The hieroglyphic source and meaning of the original text continues to create controversy among scholars, anthropologists, and New Age believers. Theories include suggestions that the texts are examples of primitive animism and superstition; were inspired by extraterrestrial intelligences; or reflect corrupted gleanings from a "higher" civilization, possibly Atlantean. The Gnostic Pagan Tradition views the intriguing, often bizarre images of the texts, to be transmissions of direct knowledge (gnosis) and communication with daemonic, or allegorical realitythe interconnected flip side of mundane, or biological reality. In Babylon, the 12 intercalary days between the Winter Solstice and the New Year were seen as the time of a struggle between chaos and order, with chaos trying to take back over the world. Other cultures (Hindu, Chinese, Celtic) also viewed this as a time for reversing order and rules. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia from December 17 through December 24, an eight-day festival when social roles were reversed. No one was allowed to work but expected to gamble and feast instead. Hanukkah is another eight-day feast celebrated at this same time period. No one is supposed to work during the half hour each evening when the Hanukkah candles are lit, but in some traditions, women are not allowed to work at all during the eight days of Hanukkah. Playful gambling (with the dreidl) is also a part of Hanukkah traditions. And in Mexico, the Posadas, the processions re enacting the search of Joseph and Mary for shelter, take place during the eight days before Christmas. Helen Farias suggests that the 12 days were originally 13 nights, celebrated from the dark moon nearest the solstice through the next full moon (Jan 1, New Year's Day). Greek women celebrated a Dionysian ritual on the full moon nearest the Winter Solstice. The Greeks told a story about the halcyon days, the two week period before and after the solstice when the kingfisher built her nest on the waves and the sea was calm while she hatched her chicks.
