Blast from the Past
Kenward Elmslie
Skanky Possum Press
$12.00 / 87 pages / ISBN 0970395213
During a recent tribute to artist Joe Brainard at Berkeley's Fine Arts Museum, former U.S. poet laureate Robert Hass introduced a group of Brainard's cronies, including Ron Padgett, Anne Waldeman, Dick Gallup, Barbara Guest, and finally Kenward Elmslie, whose new book Blast From the Past What crystallized for me in that moment of watching them all pay homage to Brainard with such affection and humor was the notion of the kreis Bean Spasms by Ted Berrigan and Dick Gallup, in which none of the poems were signed. It was Brainard, after all, who reportedly developed the "I Remember" technique—later to find wide use among most of the "New York School" poets—while visiting Elmslie in Vermont in 1969. Elmslie spends a good part of this book revisiting Brainard, as well as the "I Remember" way of writing short vivid memory shots in fluid bursts of prose, full of gossip and hilarity, to fine effect: I Remember on my way to meet Igor Stravinsky in the

Excerpts Peter Gizzi ODE: SALUTE TO THE NEW YORK SCHOOL 1950-1970 (A LIBRETTO) A car roars over a conversation A dish of Irish setters A little horse trots up with a letter in its mouth, which is read with eagerness as we gallop into the flame. A man signs a shovel and so he digs. And the nerve-ends evolved to cope with instant danger do not know what to tell the brain so they think about it As if nobody believes what anybody tells them, gray in the cafe and the shiny rain Bloom, flare, blink open Born eaves clump bounce But do we really need anything more to be sorry about But Ned is lazy, the monkey has to do it all. By day I sleep, an obscurantist, lost in dreams of lists. Did you ever read the wet page of the earth? File prayer tines Glee a short road across my face. Goodbye, Father! Goodbye, pupils. Goodbye, my master and my dame. Have I worn out my distracting powers to doze witless into the scape of night, empty of detail and excuse He has banged into your wall of air, your hubris His substance utters a sun above the stoves of our discourse History, what did the Rose do?

James Schuyler Papers
Biography
Born on November 9, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, James Marcus Schuyler experienced a peripatetic childhood. His family lived for a time in Downer's Grove, a suburb of Chicago, then Washington, D.C., and later Chevy Chase, Maryland. His parents divorced early in Schuyler's childhood and he remained with his mother and step-father. At the age of twelve, his family moved to Buffalo, New York, and two years later to East Aurora, a suburb outside of Buffalo. Schuyler attended Bethany College in West Virginia from 1941 to 1943. There he pursued interests in history, architecture, and literature. During World War II, in 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy. He spent the next two years on a destroyer in the North Atlantic, protecting convoys. He remained in the Navy after the war. In 1947, Schuyler moved to the Isle of Ischia in Italy for two years. There he lived in the rented house of W.H. Auden, whom he had met in New York. Schuyler served as Auden's secretary, typing the manuscript for Auden's book Gnomes and Auden's translation of Jean Cocteau's "Les Chevaliers de la Table Ronde." Schuyler also attended the University of Florence at this time, and he began writing poetry. Although he returned to New York briefly, an inheritance allowed him the financial independence to return to Florence in mid-1950. Schuyler began writing seriously in the late 1940's, but an important breakthrough in his career came in 1951. As a result of his correspondence with Howard Moss, Moss published Schuyler's poem "Salute", written in the hospital in White Plains, New York. Moss later published three of Schuyler's short stories in the magazine Accent along with a poem entitled "Three Penny Opera" by Frank O'Hara. At a party, Moss introduced Schuyler to Frank O'Hara and John Ashbery, who had been Moss's schoolmates at Harvard.
