25. Homage To Sharon Stone By Lynn Emanuel

H o m a g e t o S h a r o n S t o n e
It's early morning. This is the "before,"
the world hanging around in its wrapper,
blowzy, frumpy, doing nothing: my
neighbors, hitching themselves to the roles
of the unhappily married, trundle their three
mastiffs down the street. I am writing this
book of poems. My name is Lynn Emanuel.
I am wearing a bathrobe and curlers; from
my lips, a Marlboro drips ash on the text.
It is the third of September ninteen.
And as I am writing this in my trifocals and slippers, across the street, Sharon Stone, her head swollen with curlers, her mouth red and narrow as a dancing slipper, is rushed into a black limo. And because these limos snake up and down my street, this book will be full of sleek cars nosing through the shadowy ocean of these words. Every morning, Sharon Stone, her head in a helmet of hairdo, wearing a visor of sunglasses, is engulfed by a limo the size of a Pullman, and whole fleets of these wind their way up and down the street, day after day, giving to the street (Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA)

T here are novels in which all action transpires in a single day. In Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway , Clarissa Dalloway ponders, procrastinates, and reads the paper. Events from her newspaper replay through the eyes of other characters, in recursive fashion. Not much happens. Still, by the end of the story the protagonist has at least managed to throw a party. Virginia Woolf merely slows the clock. Lynn Emanuel, on the other hand, smashes it. In Then, Suddenly , nothing at all happens. On the title page is a quote: "The book is the subject of the book". Emanuel means it. There is no action, no story. All that remains is poet, reader and verbiage. What appears to be literal or real at first is not, is merely an artifact of writing. In a carnival of imagery, narrative gives way to anti-narrative. One might think such a clever concept would become cute. It is a testament to this poet's skill and ingenuity that it never does. In fact, this is the kind of book you cannot put down. If there is no story, what holds this poetry together? In

'Then, Suddenly ' by Lynn Emanuel Poems challenge reader-writer relationship Sunday, December 19, 1999 By Peter Blair Then, Suddenly By Lynn Emanuel University of Pittsburgh Press
How does a person review poetry that continually punctures the concept of professional “authors” writing for an audience of “readers”? In her dazzling and challenging new book of poems, Lynn Emanuel sometimes addresses the reader as lover, enemy, co-conspirator, pet dog and blank space. In the process, we feel that the “reader” may be another aspect of the writer’s questing self. As one line reads, “LYNN EMANUEL, IS THAT YOU IN THERE?” The poet, who teaches poetry and directs the Writing Program at the University of Pittsburgh, has written two previous collections, “Hotel Fiesta” and “The Dig.” The latter won a prestigious National Poetry Series Award. By foregrounding the reader-writer relationship, this new collection deftly extends the formal experimentation of her second book. The book’s first offering links readers with God as we “hover above the page staring down/on a small town” created by the poet’s language. The poem becomes a commentary on storytelling. A train pulls into a station. Characters get on and off: “A woman in a dress by Patou,” and a man “stalking across / the page like a black cloud in a bad mood.”

Portrait of the Author as Raoul
Today I write about the house
of the body and about myself,
its shadowy proprietor,
coming and going.
Above the street, beside a fan
and a half-inch of bourbon
floating in a tumbler, someone's
white face pokes a hole
in a dark window. It's me,
in Raoul's body.
The rain stings the window and the nothing beyond. The rain throbs steadily as the heart's dull return and lob. Bending over the woman on the bed Raoul says, Take off your dress I'll take my dress off , the woman says. And then the sibilant whisper of a black silk frock. (A what?) Frock. On the floor. Also hosiery. Also black. Suddenly naked or wearing only flawless technique and the dark eyes of staring breasts, the story ends either (A) Bending over her beautiful and tragic face against the pillows, Raoul says, Oh Lynn, Lynn you bring me to my knees. or (B) Gazing up into my own beautiful and tragic face, I say Oh Raoul, You bring me to my knees. God, reading. lynn emanuel. Copyright Boston Review, 19932002.All rights reserved. Please do not reproduce without permission.
http://bostonreview.mit.edu/BR22.1/Emanuel.html
Like God,
you hover above the page staring
down on a small town. By its roads
some scenery loafs in a hammock of
sleepy prose and here is a mongrel
loping and here is a train pulling into
a station in three long sentences and
here are the people in galoshes waiting.
But you know this story and it is not
about those travelers and their galoshes,
but about your life, so, like a diver
climbing over the side of a boat and down into the ocean, you climb, sentence by sentence, into this story on this page. You have been expecting yourself as the woman who purrs by in a dress by Patou, and a porter manacled to the luggage, and a matron bulky as the Britannia , and there, haunting her ankles like a piece of ectoplasm that barks is, once again, that small white dog from chapter twenty. These are your fellow travelers and you become part of their logjam of images of hats and umbrellas and Vuitton luggage, you are a face behind or inside these faces, a heartbeat in the volley of these heartbeats, as you choose, out of all
