Modernism and Experimentation: Authors: William Faulkner (1897-1962)
Index Born to an old southern family, William Harrison Faulkner was raised in Oxford, Mississippi, where he lived most of his life. Faulkner created an entire imaginative landscape, Yoknapatawpha County, mentioned in numerous novels, along with several families with interconnections extending back for generations. Yoknapatawpha County, with its capital, "Jefferson," is closely modeled on Oxford, Mississippi, and its surroundings. Faulkner re-creates the history of the land and the various races Indian, African-American, Euro-American, and various mixtures who have lived on it. An innovative writer, Faulkner experimented brilliantly with narrative chronology, different points of view and voices (including those of outcasts, children, and illiterates), and a rich and demanding baroque style built of extremely long sentences full of complicated subordinate parts. The best of Faulkner's novels include The Sound and the Fury (1929) and As I Lay Dying (1930), two modernist works experimenting with viewpoint and voice to probe southern families under the stress of losing a family member;

Faulkner, William As I Lay Dying
Genre Novel Keywords Death and Dying Domestic Violence Family Relationships Grief ... Poverty Summary Addie Bundren is dying in Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. As she dwindles, her five children, husband, a scattering of neighbors and the country doctor move about her. Each is given a chapter named for him or her, to provide evolving and unique viewpoints on Addie's life and death. When Addie has finally breathed her last, the action begins: Anse, Addie's husband, has promised her that she would be buried in Jefferson with her own family. The nuclear family sets out in their old wagon. Floods, injuries, irrational decisions, disagreements, fire, and the full mental collapse of one of the children plague the journey. Addie is eventually buried in Jefferson, but in the process of getting her there, the reader learns the sweet and the sordid about this poverty-stricken and profoundly dysfunctional family. Commentary Typical of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha tales, this story of the poor rural South spares no one. The dialect and use of language make the reading a bit slow, but the structure of the novel becomes a roadmap for the reader. One unique feature of the story is the multiple viewpoint method of construction. From the first person account of each of the characters the reader sees the life of the Bundren family unfold, with all of the discrepancies and varying perceptions of oral histories, based in each member's particular perspective. The story is at once comic and tragica lesson in mankind's ability to survive most anything, and then "get on with living."

WILLIAM FAULKNER
"It is the poet's privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honour and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. " Birthplace

Mississippi, US
Education
He didn't graduate from High School, though by third grade he'd already decided that "when I grow up, I want to be a writer like my great-granddaddy", finding study increasingly boring and playing truant to write romantic pastiches of Swinburne. Entered the University of Mississippi as a war veteran but dropped out after three semesters.
Other jobs
He was a postmaster for three years, but spent his days writing and was eventually asked to resign; while working as a journalist in New Orleans he completed his first novel. In the 30s he became a Hollywood screenwriter, adapting Chandler's The Big Sleep and working on Hemingway's To Have and Have Not (though the commissions he originally requested were newsreels and Mickey Mouse cartoons).

    William Faulkner
    Writer USA Born 25 Sep 1897
    Died 6 Jul 1962
    In 1929 Faulkner published two novels, wrote another two, and finally married the woman he had pursued for more than a decade. The two novels published that year were the first two of his books to describe the people and places of his fictional Mississippi county of Yoknapatawpha. In October 1929, he published 'The Sound and the Fury', the first of his works to employ radically experimental narrative techniques. It remains one of Faulkner's finest works.
    Faulkner wrote 'As I Lay Dying' while on the job as a night watchman at the university power plant. The celebrated short story 'A Rose for Emily' was also written in 1929. The next decade saw the publication of Faulkner's most interesting works, including 'Light in August' (1932), 'Absalom, Absalom!' (1936, which contains among several very long sentences a 1300-word example which is one of the longest in literature) and 'Go Down, Moses' (1942). In November 1950 he was belatedly awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature.
    In later years Faulkner grew more liberal on the subject of race relations, making public pleas for tolerance, urging his fellow Southerners not to resist integration in 1962.
