Elijah Ruggles Bishop Submitted by Susan Yvette Todd Barbour , great great great granddaughter Elijah Ruggles Bishop was born 21 January 1803 in New Russia, Essex Co., NY, and died 14 September 1896 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY. He married Amy Jenner 16 August 1830 in New York, daughter of Stephen Jenner and Elizabeth Mather. She was born 13 August 1810 in Vermont, and died 25 May 1888 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY. Young's History of Chautauqua County, New York, 1875, pg 354, states that Elijah first arrived in Jamestown in October 1829, but did not settle permanently until the fall of 1832. He was a student at the Westfield Academy in 22 May 1830. He was a millwright by trade. He built a new flouring and custom mill for Judge Prendergast which was still in operation in 1875. He introduced important improvements in water wheels and in the pitch of water and built many steam and water mills in this county and in Pennsylvania. In 1850, he went into trade but was burned out in the great fire of 1861. He rebuilt on the same grounds and held the store building for rent. The Cyclopedia states that the Elijah Ruggles Bishops had twelve children.

Robert (and probably wife Dorothy) first appear in the Colonial records on the tax rolls Woburn MA where they were assessed 2s 6d. It appears that Robert originally immigrated as a "bonded emmigrant" having been "reprieved for transport to America by the Midland Circuit Court aboard the ship Warwickshire on July 17, 1682. On February 27, 1688, he married Dorothy Farrar in Woburn, Mass".(per M. Fenton's query in the Figtree News). Robert and Dorothy must have lived in Wobourn until at least 1691, for they were taxed in each of the years through that time. They moved to Windham CT and were received there on 30 May 1693. They lived in the area that was to become Mansfield; Robert was an original patentee of that town when it was carved out of Windham on 20 Oct 1703.

75. Elijah Slaughenhoupt
Son Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt was born December 21, 1867 when his father ElijahY. Yingling Slaughenhoupt Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt married Lydia fenton.
http://users.aol.com/EvanSlaug/elijah.html
Comments welcomed. E-mail to EvanSlaug@aol.com. Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was born in West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania on April 9, 1839 when his mother Frances (Yingling) Slaughenhoupt was just 16 years old (just about one week before turning 17). It appears that his father Jacob Slaughenhoupt, was also a young teenager being only about 14 years old. The year 1839 was the same year that part of Toby Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania reorganized into Perry Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. By this time, the concept of frame houses, glass windows, and carriages had been introduced into Clarion County. In " The Yingling Genealogy , Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt is identified as Lige Slaughenhaupt Best; son of Michael and Frances (Yingling Slaughenhoupt) Best, born April 4, 1839 and dying March 22, 1920 at the age of 81. This information conflicts with reference which indicates that Elijah was the only son of Jacob and Frances (Yingling) Slaughenhoupt. The information about Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt provided to " The Yingling Genealogy " was very likely verbal and possibly based upon the spelling of Lige which if pronounced phonically ( LI GE ) could represent a shortened version of (or a nickname for) Elijah. It is interesting to note that upon marrying Frances (Yingling) Slaughenhoupt, had Michael Best adopted Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt, the descendants of Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt might today have the surname of Best.

Robert Southey, Specimens of the Later English Poets, with preliminary notices . 3 Volumes (London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1807) Information about the collection: The poets included in the 3 volumes are arranged in the table of contents both in chronological (from year of death) and in alphabetical order. The titles of the poems themselves are not listed in either place; in the alphabetical list both the volume and page number where the author's works might be found are given. From the Preface: These volumes are intended to accompany Mr. Ellis's well known Specimens of the Early English Poets. That series concludes with the reign of Charles II, this begins with that of James his successor: the two together will exhibit the rise, progress, decline and revival of our Poetry, and the fluctuations of our poetical taste, from the first growth of the English language to the present times. A slight difference has been made in arrangement; instead of sorting the Poets, according to the reigns in which they flourished, I have noticed each under the year of his death, where that could be ascertained, otherwise according to the date of his chief publication. It was desirable that the series should be brought down to the end of the last century, and this order determined whom it should include. In consequence of this arrangement a few names will be found, which are included in the work of Mr. Ellis. Many worthless versifyers are admitted among the English Poets, by the courtesy of criticism, which seems to conceive that charity towards the dead may cover the multitude of its offences against the libing. There were other reasons for including here the reprobate, as well as the elect.

A performance of Mendelssohn's "quasi-operatic" choral masterpiece Elijah will be regarded by many as the outstanding feature of this season. With a stunning line up of soloists led by International baritone Andrew Shore in the title role, and orchestral accompaniment provided by the East Lancs Sinfonia this promises to be an event not to be missed.
Elijah
Sunday 5th May 2002 7:00p.m. Andrew Shore as Elijah Originally from Oldham, where he attended Counthill School, Andrew Shore studied at Bristol University before pursuing a career in opera at the Royal Northern College of Music and the London Opera Centre. His appearances with the Royal Opera, English National Opera, Opera North and companies throughout the country have made him well-known for his wide ranging characterizations, from such comic roles as Mozart's Papageno to the more seriously dramatic Alberich of 'The Ring' and Berg's Wozzeck. In Europe he has recently appeared at the Paris Opera, as well as Hamburg, Barcelona and Amsterdam, and he will sing Verdi's 'Falstaff' in Berlin next season. In America he appeared last year at the Chicago Lyric Opera and the Santa Fe Festival, where he has been invited back to sing Don Alfonso in 'Cosi fan tutte'.
