Översättning Gun och Nils A Bengtsson

Fielding, Henry 1707-54, English novelist and dramatist. Born of a distinguished family, he was educated at Eton and studied law at Leiden. Settling in London in 1729, he began writing comedies, farces, and burlesques, the most notable being Tom Thumb (1730), and two satires, Pasquin (1736) and The Historical Register for 1736 (1737), which attacked the Walpole government and provoked the Licensing Act of 1737. This act, setting up a censorship of the stage, ended Fielding's dramatic career and turned him to the less inhibited form of the novel. In that genre he achieved his greatest success, beginning with his first novel, Joseph Andrews (1742), which started simply as a burlesque of Samuel Richardson's sentimental novel Pamela but developed into a great comic creation. He followed with Jonathan Wild (1743), the history of a superman of crime, which has been called the most sustained piece of irony in English. His masterpiece is Tom Jones (1749), a novel recounting the wild comic adventures of the good-hearted though highly fallible foundling, Tom Jones. In Tom and his guardian, Squire Allworthy, Fielding presents his concept of the ideal man, one in whom goodness and charity are combined with common sense. Because of its memorable characters and episodes, the brilliance of its plotting, and the generosity of its moral vision

Henry Fielding was born in 1707 into a reasonably wealthy English family with aristocratic relatives. He was educated at the prestigious public (i.e. very posh private) school Eton. As a young man he was fascinated by the theatre, and after a brief spell at a Dutch law school called Leiden he returned to England to become a full time playwright.
Fielding wrote dozens of plays which did well in their day, but as they were extremely topical and filled with politics, it's difficult for a modern audience to appreciate all their allusions and in-jokes. Fielding's best known play is probably the comedy (though it's labelled a tragedy) 'Tom Thumb'. In 1734 Fielding married one Charlotte Cradock. It is thought Fielding based the character of Amelia on her.
Unfortunately, the satirical nature of the theatre wasn't going down too well with politicians, and a tighter censorship regime was imposed by Parliament through the Theatrical Licensing Act 1737. This effectively closed down a lot of theatres and Fielding had to find some other way of earning a living. He took up law studies again and began writing for various newspapers.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Fielding, Henry English novelist. His greatest work, The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749), which he described as a comic epic poem in prose, was an early landmark in the development of the English novel, realizing for the first time in English the form's potential for memorable characterization, coherent plotting, and perceptive analysis. The vigour of its comic impetus, descriptions of high and low life in town and country, and its variety of characters made it immediately popular. In youth a prolific dramatist, Fielding began writing novels with An Apology for the Life of Mrs Shamela Andrews (1741), a merciless parody of Samuel Richardson 's Pamela Fielding gave a new prominence to dialogue in his work, which was to have a marked influence on the development of the English novel. He attempted to portray life realistically, with humour, though his penetrating analysis of human weakness is also compassionate.
