A charter member of Ontario's Stratford Festival, established in 1953, he found success at home and abroad, appearing on many European and North American stages. It was his tour through Britain and the U.S., in a production of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker, starring Ruth Gordon, that was perhaps the most important of his acting career. Both Wilder and Gordon recognized the strength of Findley's writing talent and, with their encouragement, he gave up the stage and turned to full-time writing in 1963. In 1996, Findley published his first novella - You Went Away - to widespread critical acclaim and bestseller status. His novel The Piano Man's Daughter , was a #1 national bestseller in both hardcover and mass market and was shortlisted for the prestigious Giller Prize. His other novels have garnered many awards - The Wars won a Governor General's Award for Fiction and established Findley's reputation as one of Canada's pre-eminent writers; it was recently ranked number two on the Quill and Quire top Canadian list. Timothy Findley Renowned Canadian writer Timothy Findley died in France on June 20, 2002 at the age of 71. A past president of both the Writers Union of Canada and Pen Canada, Mr, Findley was the recipient of numerous awards for his novels, plays and other works, including the Order of Canada. Over his long and distinguished career, Timothy Findley, spoke frequently about issues of public policy and national identity in Canada. The Sierra Club of Canada would like to share the notes of one such speech, delivered in Calgary, Alberta on October 4, 2001. NOTES FOR SPEECH AT BOB EDWARDS LUNCHEON
by Timothy Findley
04 October 2001
Remember that disagreement over the price and availability of oil that Alberta had with the East, some years ago? Well... I'm one of the bastards who didn't freeze in the dark... I had a wood stove. When it comes to survival, foresight is everything. Mind you, believe it or not, I had a certain amount of sympathy for Alberta's stance. Shortly before that East-West disagreement occurred, my friend Bill Whitehead and I were on a train heading from Toronto to Regina - Bill's home town - and I started talking to a woman across the aisle. It turned out that she was from Alberta, heading home after visiting family in the East. When she found out I was from Toronto, she nodded and said something about two different worlds . This was my first visit to the prairies - my first sight of that magnificent horizon and that incredible sky - so I said: yes

BIOGRAPHY
Timothy Findley was born in 1930 in the fashionable Rosedale district of Toronto. As a young man, he knew that he wanted to be an artist. Despite his family's misgivings, he began to study dance and later, with considerable success, acting. It was while performing in the London cast of The Matchmaker that he first met the actress Ruth Gordon and the writer Thornton Wilder. Both remained lifelong friends with Findley, and convinced him that his true vocation lay in writing. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were virtually ignored by the Canadian press. It was only with his third novel, The Wars (1977), that Findley received both recognition as a major Canadian writer and the Governor General's Literary Award. During this early stage of his writing career, Findley also wrote scripts for television, radio and film. His most noteworthy successes came with the television series The Whiteoaks of Jalna and The National Dream ; for the latter, he received an ACTRA award for co- writing with his partner, William Whitehead.

Author profile: Timothy Findley
Timothy Findley (1930-2002)
Born in Toronto in 1930, Timothy Findley began his artistic career studying dance and then later theatre. Findley became quite successful as an actor, even acting alongside Sir Alec Guinness at the Stratford Festival in the 1950s. In fact, it was not until he became friends with the actress Ruth Gordon that Findley even considered writing as a vocation. It was after his first short story was published in The Tamarack Review , that Gordon was able to convince him that he should give up acting and concentrate on writing fiction. Findley's first success as a novelist, however, did not come in Canada. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were eventually published in Britain. This all changed, however, with The Wars (1977). Published to great critical acclaim, Findley's third novel went on to win the Governor General's Award for fiction and was adapted for film in 1981. Since then he has published five more novels, each helping to establish his reputation as one of Canada's most popular and beloved novelists.

Timothy Findley: ‘The world of Tiffiness’
Timothy Findley was severely embarrassed
one morning when someone found him sniffing rocks and seaweed on a beach in British Columbia. He was searching for authenticity, this time trying to experience what an animal might sense for his novel Not Wanted on the Voyage , a mythical story of the occupants of Noah’s ark. Findley, “Tiff” to his many friends, was one of Canada's most celebrated writers, earning international acclaim as a master storyteller. Among his memorable works: The Wars, Famous Last Words, The Piano Man's Daughter, The Telling of Lies, Pilgrim and the play Elizabeth Rex. His most recent novel, Spadework , appeared in the fall of 2001. Born in the Toronto neighbourhood of Rosedale, for many years Findley lived on a farm near Cannington, Ontario, with his lifetime friend, the screenwriter Bill Whitehead whom he met in 1951 when they were actors. They called the farm Stone Orchard. It was crowded with trees, flowers, cats, dogs and horses. Findley and Whitehead later moved to Stratford, Ontario. They wintered in France, where the French government honoured Findley with the Chevalier des Arts et des Letters.
