Timothy Findley
Within the Arts Community there are forces that transcend all the limits of imagination. Timothy Findley was one of those forces, actor, playwright, screenwriter novelist and role model. Timothy Findley will always remain an inspiration to all Toronto artists as well as to all the young creators of the world. He lived his life to the fullest with the pure comprehension that as long as the muses are present anything is possible. Findley was very active in the Canadian writing community; he helped to found the Writers' Union of Canada and served as its chairperson. He was also President of the Canadian chapter of P.E.N. International. In 1962, Findley went to work at The Red Barn Theatre where he met William Whitehead who became his life long partner in work as well as in life. Together, Whitehead and Findley received an ACTRA award for their work on The National Dream.

  • Timothy Findley By Abby Whidden On October 20, the English club held its first field trip of the year. Twenty English majors and friends hopped into a school bus to go to Timothy Findley's reading in Halifax. On the way up, we bonded by reminiscing about the good ol' days of the yellow bus (or not so good days, depending on the bus route). At 6:30 p.m., we arrived at the Lord Nelson Hotel and wandered into the overwhelming lobby. Many of us felt underdressed as we padded up the royal red staircase into the Regency Room with its crystal chandelier and elaborate DaVinci display. Since we were an hour early, we plunked our unclassy jackets down on our almost-front-row seats, and went to buy books from the well-stocked display (thank you Frog Hollow Booksand Visa) or to buy supper (Mmmm . . . DQ), or to get some fresh air (comparatively speaking). At 7:30 Timothy Findley came the stage and began with an anecdote. One day, two little old ladies wandered into his condominium, remarked on the vivid colours of the decor, and invited themselves for a tour. I'm not even going to pretend to be able to story-tell like Findley, but since a toilet and a nude drawing also figured into the story we knew we were in for an interesting, if less than conventional, reading. Findley did not disappoint. He read an excerpt from his most recent novel, the Giller-nominated novel

Timothy Findley: ‘The world of Tiffiness’
    Timothy Findley was severely embarrassed
one morning when someone found him sniffing rocks and seaweed on a beach in British Columbia. He was searching for authenticity, this time trying to experience what an animal might sense for his novel Not Wanted on the Voyage , a mythical story of the occupants of Noah’s ark. Findley, “Tiff” to his many friends, was one of Canada's most celebrated writers, earning international acclaim as a master storyteller. Among his memorable works: The Wars, Famous Last Words, The Piano Man's Daughter, The Telling of Lies, Pilgrim and the play Elizabeth Rex. His most recent novel, Spadework , appeared in the fall of 2001. Born in the Toronto neighbourhood of Rosedale, for many years Findley lived on a farm near Cannington, Ontario, with his lifetime friend, the screenwriter Bill Whitehead whom he met in 1951 when they were actors. They called the farm Stone Orchard. It was crowded with trees, flowers, cats, dogs and horses. Findley and Whitehead later moved to Stratford, Ontario. They wintered in France, where the French government honoured Findley with the Chevalier des Arts et des Letters.

    Findley, Timothy Pilgrim
Genre Novel (486 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Caregivers Communication Death and Dying ... Time Summary The novel opens with a man known only as Pilgrim hanging himself in London in 1912. Despite being pronounced dead by two physicians, he somehow lives. Pilgrim has attempted suicide many times before but is seemingly unable to die. He claims to have endured life for thousands of years but has tired of living and only longs for death. He has crossed paths with many historical figures including Leonardo da Vinci, Saint Teresa, Oscar Wilde, and Auguste Rodin. After his most recent suicide attempt, he is admitted to a psychiatric facility in Zurich as a patient of the famous Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung. Pilgrim eventually escapes from the institution and masterminds the successful theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre. Next, he sets the cathedral at Chartres on fire. The novel ends with Pilgrim driving a car into a river on the eve of World War I. His body is never found. Commentary Both Pilgrim and Carl Jung search for truth and meaning in a world filled with madness. Their interaction and conversations provide much of the philosophical and spiritual substance of the novel. How do people survive the madness that surrounds them? Can we really distinguish between beliefs and reality? How should we define identity? Can an individual become anyone he wishes if he believes strongly enough?

Take time to read Findley and you may even learn some new vocabulary!!! Findley is able to intertwine the story of Timothy's story with the story of a war. He manages to make the story about Robert Ross - a soldier... not about the war. One of the reasons that this work is considered a masterpiece is, Findley managed to write a story that can be related to any time, any person, any "war". He allows you to use your imagination and own personal experiences to add to his story - making it more realistic for you, the reader. It is not definitive.
