BIOGRAPHY
Timothy Findley was born in 1930 in the fashionable Rosedale district of Toronto. As a young man, he knew that he wanted to be an artist. Despite his family's misgivings, he began to study dance and later, with considerable success, acting. It was while performing in the London cast of The Matchmaker that he first met the actress Ruth Gordon and the writer Thornton Wilder. Both remained lifelong friends with Findley, and convinced him that his true vocation lay in writing. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were virtually ignored by the Canadian press. It was only with his third novel, The Wars (1977), that Findley received both recognition as a major Canadian writer and the Governor General's Literary Award. During this early stage of his writing career, Findley also wrote scripts for television, radio and film. His most noteworthy successes came with the television series The Whiteoaks of Jalna and The National Dream ; for the latter, he received an ACTRA award for co- writing with his partner, William Whitehead.

Whoopi tries her hand at Piano Man
By JIM SLOTEK
Toronto Sun WHOOPI FOR FINDLEY: Apparently Whoopi Goldberg wasn't kidding about spending most of her spare time reading books while on location in Toronto.
Whoopi who fell in love with the works of Canuck author Timothy Findley while filming Norman Jewison's Bogus here bought the movie rights to The Piano Man's Daughter, Findley's "Southern Ontario Gothic" novel, and has just completed a deal with Kevin Sullivan (Avonlea) to film it.
In a break from his usual family fare, Sullivan will direct the dark tale of an illegitimate, troubled young woman in turn-of-the-century Toronto, the offspring of her mother's affair with a piano seller. Filming could start as early as summer '96 or as late as spring '98.
It's Whoopi's first producing stint, and she won't be acting in the film. "She did want to act in it," Sullivan says, "but frankly it's not written for blacks. It's a pretty white story. This is a film she just wants to watch and enjoy."
Technically, it's not Sullivan's feature directing debut. "Looking For Miracles (the Disney Home Video coming-of-age drama) had a bit of a theatrical release," he says. "And of course, Anne Of Green Gables played theatres in Japan. But this is a major undertaking and I'm excited."

Oct. 31 Findley's roots are in theatre (his Governor General's Awardwinning play Elizabeth Rex just finished a successful run at the Stanley the night before) and this translates into a marvelous presence before a crowd. I often leave a reading slightly disappointed because the author fails to live up to the perception I've constructed from reading their works; they lack that presence that turns a reading into a performance. Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient, Anil's Ghost) and Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day) both lacked verve when I saw them read not so long ago; they read as if they were grudgingly fulfilling an obligation to a publisher. But not Findley, which came as something of a pleasant surprise. Age has begun to catch up with him. His new motto, he says, is "don't get older" which got a laugh, but was painful at the same time, as it was an acknowledgment of his need to lean heavily on someone to get onto the stage or rise from his seat. I wondered initially if he would have the stamina to make it through the reading, but when he began to speak the vigour of a man 25 years younger surfaced. We were told that he would read for 45 minutes; he gave us more than an hour. And the reading! It was like being at the theatre. Hearing Findley read the flawlessly written dialogue of Spadework with all of the little nuances of a masterful performance was moving - it was intense. And then when it was all done, he had the grace to sign several hundred books for a very appreciative audience.

REFERENCES COLUMNS Horror Mystery Fantasy General Fiction Horror novels typically portray the mentally ill as vicious, not visionary. Canadian writer Timothy Findley has a different take on the matter in his luscious, layered and literate novel "Headhunter". Following Francis Ford Coppola's lead, Findley takes the characters from Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" and sets them loose in the modern world. In "Headhunter", however, the jungle is Toronto, Kurtz's citadel is the Parkin Psychiatric Institute, and both Kurtz and Marlowe are psychiatrists. As in Conrad's narrative, Kurtz is an enigmatic, powerful man, who has gone deep into the wilderness (of insanity) to achieve stunning commercial success, while Marlowe is the outsider journeying towards an understanding of the extent of Kurtz's power and magnetism. Findley shows a flair for the absurd in his opening pages, when Lilah Kemp, "a spiritualist of intense but undisciplined powers...inadvertently set Kurtz free from page 92 of 'Heart of Darkness'." This mordant tone allows him to be unusually effective in treading the thin line between a novel of the supernatural and a novel of psychological delusions. When Lilah is told that the Kurtz she sees in the library is the head of the psychiatric institution that dispenses her anti-hallucinogen, she is alarmed, but her Marlowe will appear next door to her, in fact, employed by the very same Parkin Institute headed up by the venerable Kurtz. "Marlowe used literature as psychotherapy. He believed in its healing powers not because of its sentiments, but because of its complexities."
