- govt -, b. Sept. 1, 1864, d. Aug. 3, 1916, was an Irish revolutionary who was executed for treason by the British. Earlier, as a British consular official, he wrote reports exposing atrocities against plantation workers in the Belgian Congo (1904) and Peru (1912). Joining the Irish nationalist movement, Casement went (1914) to Germany after the outbreak of World War I to secure aid for an Irish rebellion. Ironically, he was returning empty-handed when arrested by the British. His trial and execution caused great controversy, further exacerbated by the British attempt to discredit him as a homosexual. Ronald Firbank the Master of Irreverence
by
Tom Wilkie
Ronald Firbank's unconventional lifestyle his open homosexuality caused him to be ignored by the reading public of his day. Born as Arthur Annesly in 1886 in London, he was the son of a well to do railway company director. This relieved from the need of commercial writing and enabled him to pay for the publication of his own works, consequently most of his work appeared in only in expensive limited editions. There are a several modern publishers publishing his work the Wordsworth Classics publish his novella Valmouth and Other Stories also the Dalkey Archive Press publish some of his earlier work as the Complete Short Stories Firbank was the master of an irreverent wit and social parody, his writing influenced a generation of writers among them Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Powell, E.M Forster, Henry Green and Huxley.
He created soap- opera story lines full of wit to the point of silliness. Perhaps the most marvelous of his creations is the masseuse Mrs Yajnavalkya in

TREVILIAN (THOMAS)
The Great Book of Thomas Trevilian A Facsimile from the manuscript in the Wormsley Library. With a study by Nicholas Barker. For presentation to the members of the Roxburghe Club, 2000.
London: Maggs Bros Ltd, 2000 On 12 september 1616, Thomas Trevelian reached page 456, less than half way through his Great Book of pictures and texts. Here he drew breath by inserting his name and an extravagant knotwork initial 'T', noting beneath that he was '68 yeares of age' (this is the only fact we know of his life) in the 14th year of the reign of King James I, 'whom heavenly angels guard from treacharie'. 1616 is the year that Shakespeare died and it is into the glorious imagery and colour of this world that Trevilian allows us to enter through the pages of his Great Book as if through a window. The Great Book reflects Trevilian's life and beliefs: loyalty to the crown and the Protestant faith were firmly linked as the foundation of his existence and of his life's work. the 'matter', in his own words , 'is three folde, historicall, propheticall, and evangelicall, the first teaching examples, the second manners, and the laste a spirituall and heavenly institution', but 'it is a miscelane and now otherwise to be respected, not learned, and therefore the easyer to be pardoned'.

Immersed in the peace and beauty of the countryside and the unchanging rhythms of village life Birkin experiences a sense of renewal and belief in the future. Now an old man, Tom looks back on that idyllic summer of 1920, remembering a vanished place of blissful calm, untouched by change, a precious moment he has carried with him through the disappointments of the years.
