John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Mass., on May 29, 1917. His father, Joseph P. Kennedy, was ambassador to Great Britain from 1937 to 1940. Kennedy was graduated from Harvard University in 1940 and joined the navy the next year. He became skipper of a PT boat that was sunk in the Pacific by a Japanese destroyer. Although given up for lost, he swam to a safe island, towing an injured enlisted man. After recovering from a war-aggravated spinal injury, Kennedy entered politics in 1946 and was elected to Congress. In 1952, he ran against Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., of Massachusetts, and won. Kennedy was married on Sept. 12, 1953, to Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, by whom he had three children: Caroline, John Fitzgerald, Jr. (died in a 1999 plane crash), and Patrick Bouvier (died in infancy).

John F. Kennedy National Historic Site preserves the birthplace in 1917 and boyhood home of the 35th President of the United States. The modest frame house in suburban Boston was also the first home shared by the president's father and mother, Joseph P. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, and represents the social and political beginnings of one of the world's most prominent families. Shortly after President Kennedy's assassination in 1963, his family repurchased the birthplace and restored it as a memorial to him under the close supervision of Rose Kennedy. The John F. Kennedy National Historic Site was established in 1969 following the family's donation of the home to the National Park Service. Park Rangers present guided tours of the birthplace, as well as the nearby neighborhood including homes, schools, and church associated with the Kennedy family. DESIGNATIONS

33. All About John Fitzgerald Kennedy: There Never Was A Camelot By Thomas L. Jones

You are in: ASSASSINS THE MURDER OF JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY: THERE NEVER WAS A CAMELOT
By Thomas L. Jones
Prologue
"Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot." Allan Jay Learner. On Saturday, June 23 1990, I boarded a jumbo jet at London’s Heathrow Airport to fly home. New Zealand is about as far away as you can get to enjoy living in a socially developed country and yet be separated by distance from the rest of the civilized world. It’s about 12000 miles from England to Auckland, which can be traveled direct in twenty-four hours. I was breaking the journey in America, so the trip was not going to be as murderous on my body. I had been traveling in Europe on business and had one last stopover on the way home. I was flying to Dallas, Texas. On long hauls like this, I would treat myself to the comfort and peace of the first-class cabin and settled back to enjoy the champagne and the attention of the cabin staff. My stopover in Dallas was only two days and I was arriving late at night. One thing I had promised myself: on the Sunday I was going to visit Dealey Plaza, walk down Elm Street, stand on the pedestal next to the pergola where Abraham Zapruder had taken that historical home movie, and look across at the grassy knoll down to the overpass and back up to the Texas School Book Depository.

Tactical strength: Buy The Great Brain J.D. Fitzgerald, aged seven, tells of his adventures with his older brother Tom, alias the Great Brain. Tom, aged 10, unabashedly admits that he has the greatest brain in all of Adenville, a fictional town set in rural Utah. When Mr. Fitzgerald installs the first flushing toilet in their town, Tom devises a scheme to charge the neighborhood kids each a penny to see the "Magic Water Closet." Although Tom prefers to use his brain for profit, he will also use it to rescue boys lost in a nearby cave, make an immigrant Greek boy feel welcome, and teach a friend who lost a leg to use his new peg leg. I loved The Great Brain as a kid, and I still love its charm and wit. Fitzgerald places interesting characters in a fascinating old-West setting and gives them fun adventures. We get to join J.D. in his admiration of the Great Brain, but we also get to sample life in rural 1890s Utah. For example, Abie Glassman tries to open a store in town, but he quickly goes out of business (and dies) because the Mormons (and many of the non-Mormons) will only shop at the Mormon-owned ZCMI store. You never get the impression that Fitzgerald holds a negative opinion of Mormons, he just describes his life as he lived it.

Tactical strength: Buy More Adventures of the Great Brain Fitzgerald continues to chronicle his adventures with his older brother Tom, the Great Brain. This volume gets a little repetitive with the opening and closing chapters both involving the boys sneaking out at night to places forbidden by their parents. In each case, Tom shames other boys into going out late at night to prove his point, either that monsters do exist or that ghosts don't. The real charm of this series lies in its accurate portrayal of the characters. Tom does always think up great schemes, but he doesn't always benefit from them. When Tom starts his own newspaper, he tries to scoop his father's paper and he prints mostly gossip that hurts his neighbors. Every kid has to learn at some point that probably everyone does know the juicy stories, but that bringing those stories out in the public eye can do great harm. Tom wanted to work for his father, but his father wisely tells Tom that Tom has only proved that he hasn't matured enough to work for the paper. But Tom has his good points too. When Old Butch, the well known and loved town mongrel dog dies, Tom arranges to give Butch a hero's funeral. Tom eulogizes Butch by praising his availability to all the kids whose parents wouldn't allow a dog in the home. Tom can use his great brain for both the best and the worst uses, and he (and hopefully we too) learn from these simple yet touching stories.

Caroline Kennedy and Stephanie Dziczek Profile in Courage Essay Contest Prize Winning Essay Stephanie Dziczek,
Holmes High School, Covington, Kentucky Subject of essay: Governor Howard Dean A
mericans have rewritten the Declaration of Independence a thousand times since it was signed in 1776. The concepts that "all men are created equal" and that we are endowed with rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are inaccurate according to Thomas Jefferson, the author of these words. Their purpose was to prompt Americans to constantly reexamine our liberties and to promote these ideals until they equal truth (Boyer et al. 158). As America has developed, we have awarded women suffrage, presented African Americans with equal opportunities and granted homosexuals the right to join in civil unions. With each transformation, we rewrite a truth that more closely resembles our ideals. The daring few who advocate justice to an unenlightened majority are the heroes and progressive sculptors of our living Declaration. In 1967, a group of these bold Americans congregated outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia to crusade for the idyllic liberties of which Thomas Jefferson wrote. In an era where most gays tried to hide their "sinful and sick" identities in miserable heterosexual marriages (Galas 18), a black and white placard was held high: "Fifteen million U.S. homosexuals ask for the right to the pursuit of happiness" (Galas 16). Since 1967, gays have endured failed lawsuits and unfavorable legislation in their campaign for gay marriage. But in 2000, Vermont’s Governor Howard Dean signed a landmark bill finally awarding homosexuals the freedom they had been fighting for.

STUDIES IN
AUSTRALIAN CRIME
BY
JOHN D. FITZGERALD
PREFACE T HESE narratives and discussions of notable Australian crimes are based on a belief that there is something not merely interesting but instructive to the general reader in the doings of criminals, while a study of their motives and surroundings should be useful to the lawyer, the physician, the criminologist and the statesman. Alexandre Dumas' series of essays on historical crimes are famous in literature; and the late Mr. H.B. Irving a gifted man too soon lost to literature and the stage gave us several fascinating studies. It is of interest to note that in his category of criminals Dumas includes Mary Queen of Scots; and Irving in his judge Jeffrey. Dumas, who classified Mary Queen of Scots (over whom many tears have been wasted) as a murderess, would have placed the German Emperor in the same category. Considering the character of the studies that follow, I note that they are composed (unconsciously) on the lines of Dumas rather than those of Irving. The former are primarily studies of the crime; the latter of the criminal. In the one, of course, there is necessarily some discussion of the criminal, and in the other, of equal necessity, some account of the crime. But Irving portrayed the psychology of criminal man; Dumas dealt with the dramatic side of each crime described. His criminals were mere characters in the drama, but the drama was his main objective.
