  1. Vinyl Leaves: Walt Disney World And America (Institutional Structures of Feeling) by Stephen M Fjellman, 1992-06-16

Mist envelopes the riverbed as chirps of exotic birds are echoed among groves of foliage and vine. Grunts and roars of a variety of wild animals can be heard as our boat makes its path down the delta. The members of the crew seem to be quite comfortable and at ease although this is a first for all of them. Soon the boat docks and all passengers proceed to exit as overhead speakers speak in soothing multilingual phrases, “We hope you enjoyed your Amazon adventure…please come again and experience the magic of Walt Disney.” The people perceive to pay no heed to the monologue as smiles are exchanged with a few snaps of a camera; the jolly crowd walks down the plank as new shipments of human luggage pour into the vessel.
Sometimes what worries me is not so much that Disney has created this ultimate experience in meeting fantasy with reality for the supreme middle-class American dream, but rather the fact that many people simply wish not to admit that they have become pawns to such propaganda and feel there is no need to question it.
Once we leave the ride we are faced with a multitude of concession stands where we are offered food, drink, and souvenirs leading many of us toward impulse buying.

64. Diversity Exchange: Spring 2002
For the Long Haul By stephen M. fjellman. We are gathered this weekin convocation, called together to celebrate our community here
http://news.fiu.edu/diversity/spring2002/long_haul.htm
For the Long Haul By Stephen M. Fjellman Stephen Fjellman, right, receives a standing ovation from FIU president, Modesto Maidique following his convocation speech.
It is this idea of the long haul that interests us in the Honors College. Our students come to us with wondrous skills and talents, with hopes and plans for their futures. They come to us with a strong sense of what it is that they can do. It is our work to help them find out what else they can do. The displays around this gathering place show some examples of what else they can do. Speaking now to our students on behalf of the faculty, administration, and staff, let me tell you what we are up to.
Calculating the immediate payoff may be possible for field crops, but not for tree crops. And our students are not customers. You are not clients. You are not stakeholders. You are like a kind of tree crop. We in the Honors College tend our students, our wards, our apprentices, our novices for the long haul. For many of us, to shift a metaphor, ours is a pastoral calling. You cannot imagine how seriously we take our work.

(Contributors) More on travel from The Atlantic Monthly. From the archives: "Moore's Stone Crab" (February 2002) "A winter trip to Florida should include stone crab." By Corby Kummer From Atlantic Unbound "At Work in the Fields of the Mouse" (September 15, 1999) What do you get when a postmodernist ethnographer from New York City decides to live and work among the natives of Disney's neo-utopian Florida town? By Mark Dery Travel Lost in the Magic Kingdom On being kissed by a chipmunk and other perplexities of travel in Disney World by Richard Todd I'm going to begin my report with a little story that doesn't reflect well on me but may be instructive. We went to breakfast in our Disney "resort hotel," called the Beach Club. I'm gonna steal your girl . Reader, I could have been much, much better in this situation. I might have rubbed my eyes: boo hoo . Or made a long face and drawn tear lines down my cheeks. Instead I just smiled. Warmly? Gamely? Rictuslike? It's so hard to know from within. In any case, it was an inadequate response, and Chip (I now see) had little choice but to do what he did: lean over my scrambled eggs and propose a nose rub. Still friends . Here things went from bad to worse, and I'm afraid I said the following sentence (quietly, still smiling): "Thanks, old buddy, but I don't think we'll do noses today." Should have done noses, though, because Chip still needed an exit strategy, which he found in tousling my hair and kissing me on the head.

Anthropology A460, Modern Material Culture During the semester each student will lead class discussion of one of the course readings. You will be expected to summarize the readingwhich all class members will have read prior to class, assess its persuasiveness and insights (or, conversely, its unconvincing and mundane arguments), and suggest how the reading adds to our understanding of the modern material world. You will be required to provide me an outline of your presentation on the night you present your reading. If you did not sign up for a reading you were assigned one at random. There are more students than readings this semester, so some readings include two presenters. You can coordinate with that person if you like, or you can plan to take turns: in either case, you need a written outline to turn in when the reading is presented. Make sure you know when you're slated to present. The space directly above each reading's title indicates the person who has volunteered for (or been assigned to present) that specific reading. ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Fall 1997/Spring 1998
Fall 1997/ Spring 1998 From these courses I gained and indepth understanding of the mechanisms that drive organic reactions. The laboratory courses provided experience with the use of lab equipment: FT-IR, NMR, HPLC, and Mass Spec; along with analysis of data from these sources. The analysis of two unknowns for Organic II Lab brought together techniques and knowledge learned during the course. The presentation for Organic II Lab was an excellent experience for presenting scientific material in a formal manner. Instructor: Dr. Stanley Sunderwirth

She is also a member of the Bay Area chapter of Linuxchix, as well as an alumna of MIT. Currently, she is employed by the good people of CollabNet. Recent diary entries for stephane: 16 Mar 2001 Wow. Life has been busy for me, until fairly recently. I don't think I can really say anything more about Eazel than what others have posted: it was great working there with everybody, and I really do hope things turn out for the best for all parties involved. While looking for work, the three phrases I see most often are "free drinks", "well-funded", and "Microsoft Outlook". I prefer the first two. Tonight I'll be watching the Iron Chef Battle Ray at home with friends. I think the battles where the theme ingredient is likely to escape from the chef are some of the best ones. I hope no one tries to make manta ray gelato. If this diary entry were a category on Jeopardy!

Top 8 Books about Disney theme parks Guide Picks "It all started with a mouse," Walt Disney was fond of saying. Read about the theme park empire that now roars around the world with these insightful books. Inside the Dream : The Personal Story of Walt Disney
Richard Greene, Disney Press. This is not strictly about the parks but about the man who inspired them. It's more of a tribute than a comprehensive biography, and much of the book focuses on interviews with people who worked with and knew the icon. It's published by Disney, so don't look for any scathing revelations here.
Walt Disney Imagineering : A Behind the Dreams Look at Making the Magi

Imagineers Staff, Hyperion Press. "Imagineers" is the title Disney gives to the people who design its parks and attractions. Go behind the scenes, and discover how your favorite rides evolved from concepts to reality.
Mouse Tales : A Behind-the-Ears Look at Disneyland
David Koenig, Bonaventure Press. With an empire as big as Disney's, you have to imagine that things may not be happy all the time in the happiest place on earth. Koenig takes a critical look at some of the less flattering aspects behind the Disney magic.
