Blues. "A new name and I shall continue to exist Your left side is next to mine, no one explains why" (Originally published in 7 Poems by Charles Henri Ford, Starstreams Poetry Series #3, Nepal, 1974.) These were the times when art was re-inventing itself and Charles Henri had a hand on it all. The list of his comrades is overwhelming. Just check out his index! But first we have to warn the newspeak politically-correct reader about the themes and language. He is from the South and those who are offended by his localisms are to be pitied for the language milieu in which they grew up. The book is intellectually ahead, not behind its time. It is a nonpareil document of the intellectual bohemian life. Freshness was the force behind the artistic milieu that relied on spontaneity and lived Pound’s dictum "Make it new." To think otherwise is to fall into the problem of apathy and numbness we have in the Information Age. Again, it fits Pound’s definition of literature "as news that stays news." "Neither is Pavlik’s sometimes expressed idea of me the whole truth: someone who drinks his blood, lives on him, remains young while he grows old."

Tee mit Amerikas Ur-Avantgardist Charles Henri Ford
Ginsberg hui!, Kerouac pfui! Saul Bellows, 96, J. D. Salinger, 82, Dorothea Tanning, 90, Charles Henri Ford, 93.

A note about Charles Henri Ford
Ford died on September 27, 2002, at the age of 94. I had the pleasure of speaking with him about this project only once, by phone, in 1991. His insistence that “Parker wasn’t camp, he used camp” supported my own reading of Tyler’s film criticism in a most reassuring way. His remarks about Tyler were only a part of our conversation. It was a treat to hear him speak familiarly about an early hero of mine, André Breton, whom he knew in the View days and whose Young Cherry Trees Secured Against Hares he published in 1946. Perhaps more revealing to me, he articulated with real feeling the attitude—in both senses of the word—of a gay man who had conducted himself with unshakeable confidence through most of the twentieth century: “Don’t talk to me about Gay Liberation! Gay Liberation ruined everything!” He remembered the Village of The Young and Evil as a lost paradise of Liberation preceded by no such partisan qualifier. That his confidence originated in part from the fact that he was (through no fault of his own) beautiful and never lacking for money does not diminish it. The Ford I imagine from those days is the big-eyed beauty of Tchelitchew’s adoring portraits and the not-quite-smirking young man caught by Cartier-Bresson’s camera (above). Although I didn't have a chance to talk to him again, he sent me a very kind note about my review of View: Parade of the Avant-Garde 1940-47

Introduction by Lynne Tillman
E dmund White has called the important and unpublished diary Water from a Bucket a "gripping book." He goes on to say,
Like Tosca, Charles Henri Ford has lived for art and for love. In this scintillating diary, Ford presents his extended visits to war-torn France and Italy and his friendships with Cocteau, Balanchine, Dali, Paul Bowles, Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Ned Rorem, Jean Genet, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, and many other luminaries. The book also gives a full dress portrait of his companion of two decades, the great, querulous, and loveable Russian painter Pavel Tchelitchew. These pages show a golden moment before art surrendered to commerce, before gay life became brainless and ghettoized and before America turned its back on Europe. No wonder Ford considers Water from a Bucket his masterpiece.
Influential American surrealist, writer, and editor Charles Henri Ford was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, in 1908, and growing up lived in Memphis and elsewhere in Tennessee, along with his mother and sister, Ruth, who went on to become a renowned film actress. In 1933 he published The Young and the Evil , a novel he wrote with Parker Tyler that was banned in England and America for its subversive content. He is better known, however, for his collections of surrealist poetry, including

Spring 2000 Charles Henri Ford Catalyst Among Poets Interview by Asako Kitaori henever Charles Henri Ford is mentioned, his name evokes the image of one whose creative genius comes in and out of focus: when, where, how and in what context. The name is easily remembered, yet what he's exactly known for has eluded even the most erudite observer. As Jean Cocteau once said of him: "He is a poet in everything he creates." Charles Henri Ford blazed his way onto the literary scene in the early 1930s with the publication of his poetry in some of the most prestigious periodicals of the day, including Hound and Horn Transition New Directions Annual The New Yorker , and Poetry (Chicago). He is considered by many to be America's first Surrealist poet. His selected poems, Out of the Labyrinth, published by City Lights Books, covers a remarkable six decades. As a teenager, Ford launched an experimental literary magazine Blues , published in Mississippi, and followed nearly a decade later (1940) with View , a glossy magazine devoted to a cultural avant-garde that sprang up in New York as a conduit for the Surrealist group spearheaded by Andre Breton.
