Born and raised in Mississippi, Richard Ford disowns the label 'southern writer'. The son of a travelling salesman, transience is one of his themes. He abandoned a planned career in hotel administration, and a spell as a sports journalist inspired one of his most successful novels, the first in a trilogy

, Powells.com Before Richard Ford published Independence Day , the first novel to win both the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, he twice read its seven hundred pages aloud to his wife, correcting rhythmical miscues and shades of connotation. Such are the lengths to which an author will go so readers meeting his sentences on the page will "think exactly what I imagine they would think." The son of a traveling salesman, Ford spent much of his youth living in an Arkansas hotel managed by his grandfather. After publishing two modestly successful novels he turned away from literature and tried sportswriting, instead, working for Inside Sports magazine until it ceased publication in 1982. When

WRITERS IN PROFILE June 26th Richard Ford
Theo Dorgan travels to the Kilkenny Arts Festival to talk to Richard Ford (Independence Day, The Sportswriter, Women with Men), the man credited with creating the "dirty realism" school of American fiction, about his life and work. Richard Ford was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1944. His first novel, A Piece of My Heart, was runner-up for the Ernest Hemingway Award in 1976 and was described by The Times as "quality writing in the highest American tradition of Faulkner, Hemingway and Steinbeck". This was followed by a taut thriller, The Ultimate Good Luck, described by Stanley Elkin as "so hardboiled and tough that it might have been written on the back of a trenchcoat. A grand Maltese Falcon of a novel", and by Newsweek as "the work of a formidably talented novelist". His next book was The Sportswriter, his first to be published in Britain by Harvill in 1986, and the book which was to affect a whole decade of writers and readers. Harvill swiftly brought the two earlier novels into print in Britain and followed thesewith his exquisite short novel Wildlife ("A fine novel by a fine writer" wrote Salman Rushdie).

Excerpt
privacy This was at a time when my marriage was still happy. We were living in a large city in the northeast. It was winter. February. The coldest month. I was, of course, still trying to write, and my wife was working as a translator for a small publishing company that specialized in Czech scientific papers. We had been married for ten years and were still enjoying that strange, exhilarating illusion that we had survived the worst of life's hardships. The apartment we rented was in the old factory section on the south end of the city, the living space only a great, empty room with tall windows front and back, and almost no electric light. The natural light was all. A famous avant-garde theater director had lived in the room before and put on his jagged, nihilistic plays there, so that all the walls were painted black, and along one were still riser seats for his small disaffected audiences. Our bed—my wife's and mine—was in one dark corner where we'd arranged some of the tall, black-canvas scenery drops for our privacy. Though, of course, there was no one for us to need privacy from.

A MULTITUDE OF SINS.
By Richard Ford.
Knopf, $25. JUST where, one wonders, is this multitude? There are 10 stories in Richard Ford's second collection of short stories, his first book in four years, and throughout, the sin remains the same: petty infidelity. "Only a storyteller of Ford's remarkable agility and seriousness could produce such a rich array of stories on the single, dramatic theme of love and intimacy" so, in any case, reads a disingenuous publicity blurb. But while only the jealous would question Ford's often remarkable agility and seriousness as an American Writer (as confirmed by his Pulitzer Prize- and Pen/Faulkner Award-winning novel Independence Day ), one could just as well claim, perhaps more to the point, that only a writer of Ford's unassailable stature could expect to get away with it.

ichard Ford is among the most traditional of contemporary American writers and also among the most original. Original because traditional: in the sense that T. S. Eliot meant when he wrote that ''not only the best, but the most individual parts'' of a writer's work ''may be those in which the dead . . . his ancestors, assert their immortality most vigorously.'' Ford's sinewy and distinctively American voice contains the echoing tones of many ancestors. But the title of this new book of three long stories both invokes and marks his difference from one predecessor in particular. ''Women With Men'': in these two nouns and a preposition one hears the fading report of Hemingway's ''Men Without Women,'' the 1927 collection that included not only ''The Killers'' but stories about boxing and bullfighting as well. And Ford's title does indeed signal an allegiance to the Hemingway legacy, or at least a part of it his fascination with a world of male rituals that has, in the past, led him to write about duck hunting and car theft and fishing and football. But Ford writes ''with,'' not ''without,'' and though his three protagonists are, in fact, all men, his decision to start with the word ''women'' seems appropriate. In Hemingway's collection, one story does, famously, center on the relations between the sexes: ''Hills Like White Elephants,'' in which a man and a woman discuss an abortion without ever giving that ''awfully simple operation'' a name. The woman is distraught, the man reassuring yet in reading you know that he sees the woman's pregnancy as incidental to his own life and even to his relationship with her. Ford's men aren't like that.

    Richard Ford on Raymond Carver
    The New Yorker , October 5, 1998)
    by Melissa Byles.
Life is a gooeyness whose bearings on literature have been the occasion for perennial pondering. Writing about a story by Carver, Ford offers some of his own: "Life was this way yes, we already knew that. But this life, these otherwise unnoticeable people's suitability for literary expression seemed new. One also felt that a consequence of the story was seemingly to intensify life, even dignify it, and to locate in it shadowed corners and niches that needed revealing so that we readers could practice life better ourselves. And yet the story itself, in its spare, self-conscious intensity, was such a made thing, not like life at all; it was a piece of nearly abstract artistic construction calculated to produce almost giddy pleasure." Life, in Ford's view, is something that is or flows in easily recognizable ways. About art, he makes, I believe, the following well-worn but not necessarily well-taken points: art can have an insignificant subject matter (think of old shoes in Van Gogh paintings); art makes life more worthy, and may even a surprisingly unmodern point teach us morals, a conduct; yet art is not like life, in that art is a calculated construction, while life involves less calculation than chance. Ford clarifies this somewhat further on: "And in plain enough ways, when we told those stories to each other, in 1979, they meant something albeit something simple: that life goes this way or life goes that way; that chance is always involved, and that living is usually just dealing with consequences. In one way or other, of course, fiction is often about just that: sorting through consequences the past impending on the present and setting into sometimes astonishing motion the future."

"All of those small acts we commit on a daily basis at ground level are how we fail," he says. "We fail by lacking patience, sincerity, passion, truthfulness, lacking all kinds of things that's what A Multitude of Sins is." Ford, whose 1995 novel Independence Day won both the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award, uses his new collection to pinpoint pivotal moments of failure in people's lives. Their sins aren't spectacular ones, just the sad accretion of betrayal and loss that's part of daily life. "I don't think these people are doomed, desperate or on the edge more than anyone else," says Ford of characters like the husband and wife in "Charity," whose marriage of 20 years is in limbo after the husband has an affair. "They're socked into life pretty good. I don't think if you were to stand outside the lives of the people in these stories, in 'Creche' and 'Charity,' you would think they were anybody special. By looking at these lives, you're liable to see something as great as kings and heroes. In that fabric of otherwise under-noticeable lives is the stuff of real moral existence. It's meant to ennoble and make more poignant the lives you may not have noticed."
