Margaret Forster
Have the Men had enough?
Grandma, tall tough, witty, has devoted her life to her men. But now she has senile dementia and it’s the women who have to cope. Sounds familiar? Compulsively written and full of black humour, this book shows total understanding of the pain and helpless frustration of watching a loved person disintegrate. Back to Turning Points

'Margaret Forster'
Margaret Forster was born in Carlisle in 1938, and educated at the Carlisle and County High School for Girls. From here she won an Open Scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford where in 1960 she was awarded an honours degree in History. The day after she finished her final exams, she married Hunter Davies, whom she met and fell in love with at the age of 17. Since 1963 Margaret Forster has worked as a novelist, biographer and freelance literary critic, contributing regularly to book programmes on television, to Radio 4 and various newpapers and magazines. Her recent best selling works include the biography of Daphne du Maurier , a memoir of her own family, 'Hidden Lives' , and the novel 'The Memory Box' 'Hidden Lives' is Margaret Forster's biography of her grandmother, her mother and herself. The story starts in working class origins in Carlisle, and mirrors the fortunes of three generations of British womanhood. 'Precious Lives' is about the death of her father and her sister-in-law, both from Carlisle. 'Rich Desserts and Captain's Thin' tells the story of the Carr family, a Quaker family who set up a biscuit making business in Carlisle which became one of the largest baking businesses in Britain.

HIDDEN LIVES: A Family Memoir
Margaret Forster
(Viking Penguin)
If proof were ever needed that life, particularly for women, has improved in this century, Margaret Forster's family history would do the trick. Fogeys, young and old, who like to mutter about moral decline and the slippery slope we're on and putting the Christ back in Christmas, dadgummit, should read every word of Hidden Lives and ponder the horrors from which modernity has delivered us.

Margaret Forster is the author of fourteen previous novels, including "Mother can you hear me?' 'Private papers' and 'Georgy girl'.
Recently, her novels have tended to be based strongly in fact - "I'm always writing about family relationships, what family means and the way duty and love are all mixed up." 'Have the men had enough?', about her mother-in-law who died of Alzheimer's Disease in 1987, was written out of "rage and pity", and was shortlisted for the Sunday Express Book of the Year Award 1989. The bestselling 'Lady's maid', a novel based on the life of Wilson, lady's maid to Elizabeth Barrett Browining, was published in July 1990. 'The battle for Christabel', her sixteenth novel, was published by Chatto in May 1991.

A Bewildering Legacy
The Memory Box
by Margaret Forster
How far can we trust memory our own, or other people's recollections of the past? This is the subject of Margaret Forster's enthralling new novel.
Susannah is beautiful, talented, and universally beloved, but she suffers from congenital heart disease. In the months before her death, she painstakingly puts together a memory box for her newborn daughter. The years pass, but the box, for one reason and another, remains unopened. Finally, when Catherine is thirty-one, the age at which her mother died, she comes across the package and reluctantly unseals it, only to find that it contains a number of mysterious objects. Each of the eleven items is meticulously wrapped and carefully numbered, and, at first, entirely inscrutable. What is she to make of the gull's feathers, the half-finished watercolour, the exotic shell from an island that she is sure her mother never visited? Catherine has always denied her mother, passionately identifying with the stepmother who quickly took Susannah's place, but the apparently random contents of the box stir her curiosity and urge her on an unwilling voyage of discovery.
In a quest that is part detective story, part psychological drama, Catherine traces her dead mother's life story through the elusive clues she has left behind. The route is unexpected. First she finds herself clinging to a rain-swept cliff near Whitehaven, then fell-walking in the Lake District, and eventually she travels to a tiny, remote island in the Grenadines. With each journey, she gains a fresh perspective on Susannah, and discovers a woman who was braver, more dangerous and more original than family legend has ever acknowledged.
