Robert Forward
(Redirected from Robert L. Forward Robert Lull Forward August 15 September 21 ) was a United States physicist and science fiction writer. He earned his doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1965, for the development of a bar antenna for the detection of gravitational radiation . He then went to work at Hughes Aircraft 's research labs, where he continued his research on gravity measurement and received 18 patents. He took early retirement in 1987, to focus on his fiction writing and consulting for such clients as NASA and the US Air Force Much of his research focused on the leading edges of speculative physics, but was always grounded in what he believed humans could accomplish. He worked on such projects as space tethers solar sails (including Starwisp antimatter propulsion , and other spacecraft propulsion technologies, and did further research on more esoteric possibilities such as

Published by Tom Doherty Associates, Inc., New York, 1992. The next day, Philippe gave Randy a briefing on what the engineers had found out about the silver ball the Silverhairs had generated. Jim Merriweather was there too, arm still in a cast. The three of them floated around a conference table, fingertips keeping them levitated at the same height in Hygiea's low gravity. ``The silver ball seems to be made of the same material as the Silverhair, but it's not alive and it doesn't seem to have any connection to a wormhole,'' reported Philippe. ``It had a negative mass of about ten tons, which gives it an approximate density of a ton per cubic centimeter.'' ``Certainly not normal material,'' said Randy. ``That's a much higher density than anything previously known.'' ``It also has a very high electrical charge,'' said Philippe. ``As it would have to ...'' said Jim Merriweather. ``What do you mean by that?'' asked randy, puzzled. ``Since this cast keeps me out of a tightsuit, I've been spending my time talking with some physics experts on Earth about the Silverhair,'' said Jim.

From ``Dragon's Egg'' , by Robert L. Forward.
Published by Ballantine Books, New York, 1980. The expedition was still six months away from Dragon's Egg, but it was time to start the activities of the automated probes that had been sent ahead by St. George. There would be a lot of work to do in preparation for their close-up view of the star. Now that they had found and identified the asteroidal bodies around the neutron star that they would need, the work could be done as easily by robot brains as human ones. The largest of the probes was really an automated factory, but its single output was very unusual monopoles. It had some monopoles on board already, both positive and negative types. These were not for output, but the seed material needed to run the monopole factory. The factory probe headed for the first of the large nickel-iron planetoids that the strong magnetic fields of the neutron star had slowed and captured during its travels. It started preparing the site while the other probes proceeded with the job of building the power supply necessary to operate the monopole factory, for the power that would be needed was so great that there was no way the factory probe could have carried the fuel. In fact, the power levels needed would exceed the total power-plant capability of the human race on Earth, Colonies, Luna, Mars, asteroids, and scientific outposts combined. Although the electrical power required was beyond the capability of those in the Solar System, this was only because they didn't have the right energy source. The Sun had been and still was very generous with its outpouring of energy; but so far the best available ways to convert that radiant energy into electricity, either with solar cells or by burning some fossilized sun energy and using it to rotate a magnetic field past some wires in a generator were still limited.

Professional Biography of Dr. Robert L. Forward
Back Dr. Robert L. Forward is a science consultant, writer, and futurist specializing in studies of exotic physical phenomena and future space exploration with an emphasis on advanced space propulsion concepts. Dr. Forward obtained his B.S. in Physics from University of Maryland in 1954, M.S. in Applied Physics from UCLA in 1958, and Ph.D. in Gravitational Physics from University of Maryland in 1965. For his thesis he built and operated the world's first bar antenna for the detection of gravitational radiation. The antenna is now at the Smithsonian museum. Dr. Forward has 40 years of experience in advanced space propulsion, experimental general relativity, gravitational and inertial sensors, low noise electronics, and space sciences. For 31 years, from 1956 until 1987, Dr. Forward worked at the Hughes Aircraft Company Research Laboratories in Malibu, California in positions of increasing responsibility, culminating with the position of Senior Scientist on the Director's staff. During that time he built and operated the world's first laser interferometer gravitational radiation detector, invented the rotating gravitational mass sensor, published over 70 technical publications, and was awarded 18 patents. He left Hughes in 1987 in order to spend more time writing and consulting under his own company, Forward Unlimited. From 1983 to the present, Dr. Forward has had a series of contracts from the Department of Defense and NASA totalling more than $820,000, to explore the forefront of physics and engineering in order to find new energy sources and new propulsion concepts that could produce breakthroughs in space power and propulsion. In one study Dr. Forward was able to show that the futuristic concept of antiproton annihilation propulsion was technically feasible, although expensive. As a result of his study, the Air Force set up special programs to support antiproton annihilation propulsion research, which are still ongoing today.

I t isn't going into space that has you reaching for the Dramamine. Before NASA retired the shuttle, it had gotten to be almost routine. There's just something about being dropped by the cargo plane in midair. Those moments of free fall before the cable catches you for the real trip to space are nerve-racking, not like being in orbit at all.
The loud metallic clashings don't help. The passenger capsule is being locked securely to the flatbed SST that will carry it to the edge of space; the streamlined fairings are being latched into place. It still sounds as if the capsule is being battered apart.
At the front of the 20-meter-long capsule, the crew sit in their tiny control room; they won't have much to do until the transport plane falls away and they maneuver to meet the cable's grapple-craft when it drops in from space. Around you, the 29 other passengers in the full capsule sit and fidget. The Mach-3 trip to the space elevator is about to begin.
It was Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the Russian space pioneer, who first understood that multistage rockets could carry us into space. Years after his death, this insight brought him fame as the Father of space travel.

Title: Flight of the Dragonfly (The)
Author: Robert L. Forward
A crew of humans travel to a distant planet to meet the intelligent lifeform we have discovered there. They turn out to be a race largely interested in mathematical problems (sounds very reasonable to me!)...but, not everything goes as planned. Since there is no violence in this unusually technical science fiction story, the focus is on the details. Unfortunately, according to "William E. Emba" the author "obviously cribbed from George Gamow['s] `One, Two, Three, Infinity' not knowing that Gamow got it wrong." "Note: I think the originally released Dragonfly is great. Not its subsiquent non edited version. The Mathematical Elements were used as the focus of humans and aliens learning to communicate with each other. It was also used to help the reader understand, just how advanced they were." (Contributed by Anonymous) Link: Learn more about this work HERE.

Robert L. Forward:Starquake
[Spoilers for Starquake and Dragon's Egg herein read with caution] First off, this is a sequel to Dragon's Egg , which I believe was Forward's first novel. I'll try to cover that in here as well, even though it's a few years since I read it... Robert L. Forward is a respected Ph.D. physicist who has done a number of papers speculating on physics near neutron stars, black holes, and such places where physics as we know it is strained to the limit. A lot of his stuff is extremely speculative, so it's only natural that he move into SF. Prose is not his main strength, though. His characters are extremely wooden, especially his humans. His aliens are a lot better. In Dragon's Egg , IIRC, a neutron star was detected entering the vicinity of the solar system. A scientific expedition was sent out to investigate it. (This is a few centuries in the future, btw.) Unbeknownst to them, life exists on the star. It is life on an incredibly small scale, both in time and in space(one "day", or rotation of the neutron star, is a fifth of a second), but the ecosystem isn't conducive to swift evolution. The arrival of the humans changes that, however... In brief, during the first day of the humans' presence near the star, a race called the cheela evolve, attain sentience, and develop civilization, in response to the humans' presence in their sky and some of their laser scanning probes.

Otras Opiniones.: Fecha .: 15 Mar 2000 De Opinion .: Definitivamente mi favorita. Saturn Rukh
by Robert L. Forward Submit Book Review
Reviewed by Ray Briddock (27. Mar 2000)
Bob Forward specialises in hard science fiction. He is especially good at extrapolating to the point of fantasy, without actually departing from what is currently known scientifically. At least what cannot be currently disproven scientifically.
In this novel, he puts this skill to good use, first positing that there is no reason why a complete ecosystem of wildlife should not be living in the atmosphere of Saturn.
From there it is but a small step to posit that some of those lifeforms have developed intelligence. In ordr for a story to happen, we need to move some humans into proximity with these intelligent Saturnians. This requires a method and a motive. Dealing with motive first. Since the Saturnians are constrained by their environment, (more so than are we), it makes sense for the humans to go to Saturn, and this is the option which Forward chooses. It is to Forwards credit that he spends some time discussing the financial considerations of the trip. Why should we as a society, invest in a trip to Saturn. What is the payback. In the prevailing culture, particularly in the United States, it is insufficient to do science on the basis of speculation. Payback is king and a trip to Saturn is no different.
