Krimi. Diogenes Verlag, 362 Seiten, ISBN: 3257227531
Ersch. 1991 unter dem Titel "Comeback" Aus dem Englischen 1993 von Malte Krutzsch
Der Autor:
Dick Francis, geb.

To the Hilt by Dick Francis Ah, another novel from the pen of Dick Francis, author of umpteen mysteries about horse racing. To the Hilt , not surprisingly, does involve the sport of kings, although not to the extent that some of Francis' other books do. The main character (and first-person narrator) of this particular opus is one Alexander Kinloch, a somewhat eccentric painter who lives in a bothy in Scotland. When his step-father, a rich brewery owner, suffers a heart attack, and the brewery is discovered to have been defrauded, Alexander gets caught up in solving the mystery of the missing money, saving the brewery, and keeping himself alive contrary to the wishes of a fairly vicious villain. Underlying the main plot is a conflict between Alexander's aristocratic Scottish uncle (usually referred to as "Himself") and an elderly conservator over the ownership of the hilt of one of Bonnie Prince Charlie's swords (hence the book's title). To the Hilt epitomises the phrase "light reading." I do not mean this in any negative sense - quite the contrary, this book makes ideal on-the-bus reading. It's not as strong as some other Dick Francis books (

    51-L Crew FRANCIS R. SCOBEE
Commander/Challenger STS, 51-L Dick Scobee was selected as an astronaut candidate in January 1978, along with fellow Challenger crew members El Onizuka, Ron McNair and Judy Resnik. After completing a one-year training and evaluation period he qualified for future shuttle missions as a pilot. His first mission was the April 1984 flight of the Challenger STS 41-C, launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Scobee was pilot and second in command. The mission saw the successful retrieval, on-board repair and redeployment of the damaged Solar Maximum Satellite, as well as flight testing of the Manned Maneuvering Units. He also served an instructor pilot on the NASA/Boeing 747 shuttle carrier aircraft. Scobee enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1957 after graduating high school. Stationed in Texas, he attended night school, earned two years of college credit and was awarded a scholarship through the Airmen's Education and Commissioning Program. He was graduated from the University of Arizona in 1965 with a degree in aerospace engineering, the same year he received his Air Force commission. After earning his wings in 1966, he received orders to duty in Vietnam the following year where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

    Twice Shy

Young physicist Jonathan Derry is given some tapes by a friend but, unknown to him, the tapes are really an elaborate, computerized horse-betting system. Once again Dick Francis weaves a constantly twisting plot, a wicked villain, non-stop action, and an explosive showdown in the way only he can.
    Shattered

When jockey Martin Stukely dies after a fall at Cheltenham, he accidentally embroils his friend Gerard Logan in a perilous search for a stolen videotape. Logan, a glassblower on the verge of widespread acclaim, is suddenly faced with terrifying threats to his business and to his life.

    Francis Richard "Dick" Scobee
Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force A Vietnam War fighter pilot who joined the U.S. Astronaut Corps, he was the Shuttle Challenger Commander. He entered Astronaut training in 1977 and was second in command of the Challenger on a successful mission in April 1984. He died on January 28, 1986 when Challenger exploded 73.5 seconds after launch from Cape Kennedy, Florida. A Presidential Commission determined that an o-ring in the right booster rocket failed to contain the pressure of hot gasses produced by the burning rocket fuel, causing the tank to tear away from the booster's wall, thus rupturing the fuel tank and causing a massive explosion. He was buried in Section 46 in Arlington National Cemetery on what would have been his 47th birthday. His grave is marked with a regulation headstone which bears the United States Air Force Astronaut Insignia. His grave is directly across from the Tomb of the Unknowns and the Memorial Amphitheater, and just a short distance from that of Captain Michael John Smith of the Challenger in Section 7-A.

Dick Francis’ fortieth book is a twisting, spiralling hurricane of a thriller that will defy anyone to treat the weather as an everyday topic of conversation. Perry Stuart, TV meteorologist, predicts periods of English drizzle, with bursts of heavier rain and sunshine to follow. His life calm and ordered, his face familiar to every British household, Stuart’s profound weather knowledge and accuracy has given him high status among forecasters, but no physical baptism by storm. Not, that is, until a fellow forecaster offers him a Caribbean hurricane-chasing ride in a small aeroplane, as a holiday diversion. By frightening accident, Stuart learns more secrets from the flight than wind speeds – and back home in England he faces threats and danger as deadly as anything that nature can evolve.
