"Longshot"
I doubt there is such thing as a bad Dick Francis novel and I just found out that they can be just as good the second time around. Or at least that's what I found with Longshot . I picked up a hardcover copy in excellent condition at a used bookstore for $1.00 with the intention to give it away since I had already read it. Well eighteen months later it's still in my collection as I discovered while straightening my bookshelves. Why isn't this book on the Dick Francis page?, I asked myself. Per usual, I started to thumb through it. Next thing, I'm leaving the bookcase a mess and shutting down my computer to curl up on the couch. I had a vague notion that I remembered what happened, but it's a well worded good story in between the action so I kept reading until the end. Longshot is about community, survival, writing, and, naturally, race horses. Our narrator, John Kendall has written six survival guides for adventurers vacationing in the jungle, wilderness, ice or desert. Now he's written his first novel and luckily it has been accepted for publication. Until then, however, he's broke and in need of temporary housing. On an impulse he takes a job writing a biography of a racehorse trainer, Tremayne Vickers. So he heads off for rural England to live at the Vickers' home for a month. From nearly the moment he is picked up at the bus station he puts his survival skills to good use. And as the days pass, he does the same with his natural ability for insight and finds himself in the middle of a murder mystery. He soon learns that rural England is just as much a challenge for his survival skills as any of the harshest environments he's written about.

Rockets will regret it By Dick Vitale SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM June 21 It looks like 7-foot-5 Chinese center Yao Ming will be the top choice of the Houston Rockets in the upcoming NBA draft. Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich and the Houston entourage visited China, and they were impressed enough to want to make Ming their center in a lineup that includes Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley in the backcourt. Dickie V sees Duke's Jason Williams (right) as a slam-dunk star in the NBA. But I have a gut feeling the Rockets are making a mistake. I think they'll be sorry they passed on Duke's Jay Williams. There's no doubt in my mind that he will be a superstar and that people in Chicago will be ecstatic about getting him at No. 2. Think about this Chicago Bulls lineup: Williams at point guard

    Biography
(Under Construction!) Richard Stanley Francis was born on Halloween, 1920 in Wales. At the age of fifteen, Dick dropped out of Maidenhead County School and won a hunter show, therefore starting an illustrious career as a steeplechase jockey. Dick has had three main careers: Air Force pilot and airframe fitter (during the war years), jockey and novelist. In 1947, Dick married Mary Margaret Brenchly. Ten years later, he retired from racing at the age of 37 and became a racing correspondent for the London Sunday Express . Five years after that in 1962, his first novel Dead Cert was published. A clever man, Francis made a deal with his publishing company that as long as he wrote a book a year, they would keep all of his novels in print. In 1983, he is knighted with the Order of the British Empire. Although there are rumours that 10 lb Penalty will be his last book, we can always hope. Dick and his wife now live in the Cayman Islands.

    Chapter Two: The Crew
    By William Harwood
"When you find something you really like to do and you're willing to risk the consequences of that, you really probably ought to go do it." - Challenger commander Francis "Dick" Scobee Challenger's seven-member crew, more than any other shuttle crew, symbolized the American ideal of equal opportunity and promise: five men and two women; a Jew, a Buddhist and a black; test pilots, scientists and a teacher. Truly, a representative shuttle crew with a wide blend of talents, skills, dreams and ambition.
    Francis "Dick" Scobee, commander
Dick Scobee, 46, was everyman's shuttle commander, a former airplane mechanic who went to night school for his education and later made it from the enlisted ranks to Air Force test pilot status before joining NASA's astronaut corps. Scobee's first shuttle flight came in April 1984 when he served as co-pilot aboard Challenger for the most spectacular shuttle mission to that point: the capture, repair and release of the Solar Max sun-watching satellite. Scobee was born to fly. He said his fascination with airplanes began during his childhood in Auburn, Wash.

    http://www.disordered.org/Mystery.html
Although I always thought of myself as a science fiction fan, my reading probably involved nearly as many mystery writers as it did SF. And over the years the mix has changed to one in which mysteries dominate. What follows is a listing of some of my favorite mystery writers of past and present. It surprised me to discover that when I began there were few mystery resources on the web and that even now most of the names I list here don't have legions of devoted fans creating web pages for them.
Arthur Conan Doyle: How can any discussion of the mystery start anywhere but with Sherlock Holmes ? Although others were arguably first, Conan Doyle's influence was the most lasting. And while a lot of his short stories are pretty weak and his writing less than inspired, he could surprise. To my mind The Hound Of The Baskervilles , his only novel-length Sherlock Holmes story, was his best work. (Conan Doyle wrote three other novel-length Holmes stories, but Hound is the only one that involves Holmes from start to finish.) Conan Doyle himself was ambivalent about Holmes, believing that the stories obscured his more scholarly or literary work. Having read much of his output, I have to say that the man was deluded. Holmes was the best thing he ever did, which surely should have been enough for one literary lifetime. Rex Stout I think the relationship between immovable object Nero Wolfe and irresistible force Archie Goodwin is the most interesting in detective fiction. The interplay of eccentric intellectual Wolfe and man of action Goodwin was always my favorite part of the stories. The mysteries were entirely inconsequential to me, in some cases detracting from what mattered. Although Stout wrote about other characters, they all pale in comparison to Wolfe. (Or even without the comparison; his other stories range from boring to downright

    Authors and Creators
    Dick Francis
Although only two of his heroes appear in more than one book, and only a handful of them are professional investigators or security consultants, former Queen's jockey Dick Francis has, in fact, been responsible for a long line of what might be considered non-PI PI novels. A former Welsh steeplechase jockey, Francis has become one of the most respected and popular mystery writers in the world, and in 1996, was voted a Mystery Grand Master by the CWA. His heroes are invariably cool, aloof loners, calmly professional, at loose ends with their lives, and often scarred, either physically or emotionally, and often both. They may not all be "official" eyes, but they certainly end up doing the job, even if the job description doesn't mention it. To overlook Francis' work, or dismiss it as merely horsey versions of Agatha Christie, is just wrong. Dame Christie would never people her quaint little villages with such an assortment of villainous psychopaths and sociopaths, or put her heroes through such physical and mental torture. People get hurt in these books, and their pain isn't easily walked off. The bad guys are nasty, and brutal, and the books are often hardboiled almost to the point of noir. Fans of the PI genre could do a lot worse than to check out his work. Particularly recommended are the Sid Halley books, where Francis actually does write about a private eye, for once. Coincidentally, I think they represent some of his best work. They might also look at a few of his actual professionals
