Anne Frank and the Holocaust by Pat Smith/Tefft Middle School Anne Frank was one of the Jewish victims of Nazi persecution during World War II. The Frank family tried to escape by going into hiding. During July of l942, Otto Frank, Edith Frank and their daughters Margot and Anne hid in the building pictured above this text. The building consists of two parts: a front house and an annex. Otto Frank's business was located in the front house. The uppermost floors of the back annex became the hiding place. It is located on Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam, Holland. They were later joined by Mr and Mrs Van Daan, their son Peter and Mr Dussel. This is the secret entrance behind the bookcase that led to the hiding place in the annex. Anne Frank lived in the secret annex for more than two years. Anne and the seven other people living with her were taken into custody by the Green Police in August of l944. The only person who survived was Otto Frank. Anne died of typhoid fever at the Bergen-Belsen camp in Germany. She has left her diary as a testimony to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. Her photo scrapbook is a legacy to those who search for the meaning of her death. All eighth graders in U46 study about Anne Frank and the Holocaust in their English class. The text used is

Holland at War The German invasion of Holland began on May 10th 1940. It was a complete surprise: Holland expected to remain neutral as it had done during the First World War. The occupation was swift. In a few days all the important areas of the country were seized. The prime minister and his cabinet flew to England and set up a government in exile. After fierce fighting near Arnhem, and the bombing of Rotterdam, Holland was forced to surrender. Nazi rule in Holland brought many changes: identity cards were introduced, food rationing began, a blackout was enforced. Dutch Jews The Dutch Jews began to suffer persecution. The Jewish population in Holland in 1940 was about 140,000 of whom 24,000 were refugees. The Dutch government, which had not been convinced of the need for German Jews to flee their country, had restricted the number of immigrants, like Anne Frank and her family, allowed into Holland. Amsterdam had the largest Jewish community of 90,000. Most were poor and did semi-or unskilled work; a minority were professionals. Between May 1940 and the summer of of 1941 there was a gradual removal of Jews from public life. Jews were excluded from hotels and restaurants, they had to register with the Nazi authorities, and Jewish-owned land was appropriated and sold to non-Jews. Prominent Jews were forced to form a council which would administrate Jewish affairs as the Nazis wanted. Dutch Nazis Although Jews had lived reasonably freely in Holland for several centuries, anti-Semitism was by no means unknown. A Dutch Nazi party developed and thrived in the 1930s, and its members were ready to welcome their German counterparts when they invaded in 1940. As many as 45,000 Dutch men and boys volunteered to assist the German occupiers in various ways - Waffen SS, army and police. Such contingents were particularly active on rounding up the Jews, and were often as brutal as the Germans. (Most occupied countries had collaborators of various kinds, and it is certain that Britain too would have done so, had we been invaded. Indeed, many years after the war it was discovered that British citizens in the occupied Channel islands had collaborated with the Nazis in their anti-Jewish extermination program.)

BEYOND ANNE FRANK by Dr. Philip Rosen Educational Director Holocaust Museum and Education Center Cherry Hill, New Jersey Handicapped 70, 273 deaths were recorded. In response to widespread religious objection, the program formally was stopped, however, informally continued at hospitals and asylums. Between 1941 and 1945, a program, called 14f13, authorized euthanasia centers which murdered concentration camp inmates in Germany and Austria, Jews and Gentiles, who no longer could work. About 20,000 died under this program. SS units in Poland and the Soviet Union simply shot mentally and physically handicapped people in Nazi occupied conquered territory. In all, about 250,000 mentally and physically handicapped people met their death under this false "euthanasia" program. For younger teenagers, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's Handicapped pamphlet is available. Inna R. Friedman's Other Victims (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1990) is readable for middle schoolers and includes information on sterilization and murders of the disabled also a discussion of the fate of German mullatos, a subject rarely treated. For high school students, By Trust Betrayed by Hugh Gregory (New York: Henry Holt, 1990) is a study of the systematic murder of the handicapped based on captured Nazi documents and testimonies. Anne Frank The Diary of Anne Frank was written by Anne Frank, a young teenage Jewish girl. She and her family had to move from Frankfurt am Main, where Anne was born, to escape persecution. When she was barely 13 years old her family went into hiding in Amsterdam, in a place called the Achterhuis , a small two-story space behind Otto Franks's company space. The door to the Achterhuis Grüne Polizei and sent to concentration camps. Meanwhile Miep Gies and Elly Vossen, two of the people who cared for them during the hiding years, found the diary and saved it. Anne, Margot and Edith Frank, the family Daan and Mr. Dussel did not survive the German concentration camps. Anne died from exhaustion in Bergen-Belsen, in March, 1945, two months before the liberation of the Netherlands. Only Anne's father Otto made it out of the concentration camps alive. Miep gave him the diary and he edited it for publication under the title The Diary of Anne Frank . Recent editions compare her original entries with her father's edited versions. The house where Anne and her family hid is now a museum. It is at Prinsengracht 263 in the city center, within walking distance of the main train station, the palace and the Dam. Her name was Anne Frank. Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. She was born Jewish. Her intense and persistent family consisted of: a sister, Margot Frank and her parents, Edith and Otto Frank. Anne Frank was born during very hectic times. This was when many Germans had a hard time in their jobs. They had to pay attention to Adolf Hitler?s speeches filled with disgust about Germans. Adolf Hitler was the Nazi party leader. The Nazis and Hitler despised the Jews. They said that Germany?s problems were mainly based on Jews. Hitler also believed that the Jews were dishonest and dangerous to Germans. After Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933, he made laws harsher than ever. He took control of every portion of Jewish daily life. These included jobs for Jews, school for children, and books Jews wrote. Nazis would burn the books and stores and public places were boycotted. So soon enough, Anne?s dad decided to move to Amsterdam, Holland.
