Introduction
Virtual tour
You visit the front and rear parts of the House (known in Dutch as the voorhuis and Achterhuis), and go back in time to the Second World War. For the CD-ROM, the Anne Frank House was specially laid out as it had been during the time that Anne was in hiding. It seems as if you yourself are actually in the House and, by moving the mouse, you can view all around and also move through the building. You are at the centre of a sphere and can turn 360 degrees and look upwards and downwards as well. Doors open for you and you can zoom in on all kinds of objects that you encounter. You can request supplementary information on these items. The people You become acquainted with the people involved in the story: Anne, her father Otto, her mother Edith, her sister Margot, and also the other people in hiding and the helpers such as Miep Gies and others. The CD-ROM tells the story of their lives during the war, and contains unique images and information: including eye-witness reports and pictures from the Frank family album. The times You will learn history in a unique and personal manner. What actually happened in the Second World War? What do anti-semitism and persecution mean? Why did people have to go into hiding? What are concentration camps? The facts are narrated by means of multimedia techniques involving slide shows, photographs, video fragments and spoken language. The story is told in a way that appeals to both adults and young people.

Articles and Essays of Louis Bulow
A fine collection of writings centered on the Holocaust, illustrated by many disturbing images. The design of the site reflects its subject: stark and somber, but with brief, occasional flashes of light. Oscar Schindler is featured in several of the essays, but others look at Hitler, Mengele, Holocaust survivors, and other issues. Many of the essays are available in Danish or English or both. The site has been recently updated to include new material on Anne Frank, Mengele, Kolbe, and the death camp at Auschwitz.

Why would anyone want to read the diary of an ordinary 13-year-old girl? That's what Anne Frank asked herself as she began to write in her diary in the early 1940's. But her diary has become famous because she wrote so movingly about a subject many of the world's best writers have struggled to find the right words to describe. Anne was one of 6 million Jews who died as a result of the "Holocaust" during World War II. Her diary tells of how she and her family went into hiding and tried to keep hope alive when much of the world seemed to be going mad. Anne Frank House

Anne Frank
(Annelies Marie Frank)
Diarist Anne Frank is known throughout the world for her diary Het Achterhuis Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl ), which documents her adolescence in German-occupied Amsterdam during World War II. The diary also describes the impact of Nazi anti-Semitism on both Jewish and non-era. Introduction Frank's diary is at once a candid self-portrait, a portrayal of domestic life, an account of people threatened with imminent death, a depiction of experiences and problems common to young adults, and an examination of universal moral issues. This private journal, which she did not live to see published, sheds light on an episode in history that embodied extremes of both the degradation and the nobility of the human spirit. Who was Anne Frank?
Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany on June 12, 1929, the second daughter of Otto and Edith Frank. Anne's sister, Margo was three years older. There are photographs of the family that show the comfortable, normal and happy life they led there surrounded by many friends. The Frank sisters grew up speaking German and playing with Catholic, Protestant and Jewish children. The Frank family expected to live their lives in Frankfurt as Otto Frank's family had done for generations but conditions of life in Germany were changing. In March 1933, the National Socialist (Nazi) party was elected to lead the municipal council in Frankfurt. The Nazis, whose power was spreading throughout Germany, expressed strong and violent feelings against the Jews. With Adolf Hitler as their leader, the Nazis banned all other parties. Anyone who opposed them was beaten or imprisoned. Soon, the prisons were so overcrowded that new ones, called concentration camps had to be built. The concentration camps were so called because in them were concentrated Jews, Communists and enemies of the Nazis. Hitler continued to incite hatred of the Jews, launching Anti-Semitic campaigns on the radio, in films, in newspapers, magazines, and posters. He enacted laws against Jews, segregated Jewish school children, and deprived Jews of their jobs and property.

Welcome
This site contains resources for the study of Anne Frank and the Holocaust . We have written it to coincide with the Anne Frank: a History for Today exhibition which tours the UK continously, and which came to Beverley Minster for the month of September 2001. (For visitors who do not know our part of the world, Beverley is the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire, in England, which is part of the United Kingdom.) Back to top
A special welcome to visitors from around the world
This site began life as a place where teachers would find help for the English and Welsh National Curriculum. But we soon saw that Holocaust Education is international. We have already had lots of contact and messages from visitors living in all parts of the world. Some things on the site may not be of interest to you, but we hope you will find good things - and share your ideas with us. Here are two typical examples of how this can happen:

After the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940, the Dutch people were immediately faced with the question of choice: how to respond to the Nazi occupation. Tens of thousands of Dutch people followed Hitler, and millions more looked the other way. Eventually, a resistance movement began to grow. The Nazis needed Dutch collaborators to carry out their fascist decrees. What would have influenced someone to become a collaborator? What factors would have encouraged someone to join the resistance? Do you think these factors were based on personal characteristics or political beliefs? What was the price of resistance during the war? What was the price of collaboration?
