Nick Foulkes England Before New
Labour Spoiled It Black Ajax
by George MacDonald Fraser Harper Collins: # 16.99
Black Ajax is the unsentimental yet humane story, solidly founded on fact, of a freed black slave called Tom Molineaux, who leaves America for England with the dream of taking the title of Champion Prize Fighter from Tom Cribb.
As the plot unfolds with a series of different narrators, Black Ajax becomes a glorious patchwork of different voices: ranging from the Prince of Wales to the footman of a baronet's wife, and from Hazlitt to Captain Buckley 'Mad Buck' Flashman, father of the notorious Harry.
Some of the 'witnesses', as these characters are known, may only be called upon to address the reader for a couple of pages. Others, like Paddington Jones, Molineaux's trainer, make regular appearances throughout the book. MacDonald Fraser evokes each character to perfection - adopting his particular argot, and imbuing him, (or in one case her), with a full complement of human hopes, fears, failings and pretensions. His handling of Lucien-Marie d'Estrees de la Guise, the Louisiana lounge lizard who starts off Tom Molineaux's career in the ring, is quite masterly.
Black Ajax opens with an account of its protagonist's death, in Tom Molineaux's case as a broken-down boxer sparring, as little more than a fairground attraction, with Irish yokels who wish to test their mettle. Thereafter the story of Tom's life, from his first brutal and bloody bout in the American South with the 'Black Ghost', is unravelled by a shadowy figure researching his life.

Flash for Freedom
Another in the enjoyable Flashman series, in which Harry Flashman, the egregious villain in Tom Brown's Schooldays pursues his dastardly career across several continents (see Flashman and the Angel of the Lord . Here he finds himself an unwilling passenger aboard a slaveship skippered by John Charity Spring. Spring is a magnificent literary creation: an ogre capable of savage violence who is also a classical scholar and sprinkles his conversation with Latin tags. The ship travels first to West Africa to pick up slaves in Dahomey, where the party is nearly annihilated by Amazon warriors who object to Spring's attempt to purloin one of their number. After a narrow escape from this, the surviving ship's company, headed by Spring, sails for the USA to unload its cargo of slaves. On arrival Flashman escapes, but only at the price of pretending to be a crew member who died on the voyage and who was a British navy man in disguise ordered to spy on Spring. Flashman therefore finds himself unwillingly involved in the Abolitionist movement in the USA. Predictably this leads to all kinds of adventures, some amatory, and finally he has to be rescued from slave-catchers by none other than Congressman Abraham Lincoln. As usual, the book is furnished with footnotes by the `editor', which fill in some of the historical background to the lively narrative.

FLASHMAN AND THE ANGEL OF THE LORD
Readers of Tom Brown's Schooldays , if any there are today, will be familiar with Harry Flashman, Tom's cowardly and caddish persecutor who was finally expelled from Rugby for drunkenness in the 1830s. George Macdonald Fraser conceived the masterly idea of following up Flashman's career in a series of novels. He purportedly discovered Flashman's memoirs in a collection of unpublished manuscripts, and the result has been a series of some of the most enjoyable light novels to have appeared in the twentieth century. Although Fraser's aim is entertainment, however, he blends this with a considerable amount of seamlessly integrated historical information, as Flashman lands in one hotspot after another in his peregrination through the world. %T Flashman and the Angel of the Lord

George MacDonald Fraser
Black Ajax
George MacDonald Fraser is best known for his excellent Flashman series, set in Victorian times; this book is also a historical novel but deals with the slightly earlier Regency period (Flashman's father figures in it). It is a novelization of the life of the black boxer Tom Molyneaux. He began life as a slave in Virginia, where he was used as a fighter by his owner, who offered him his freedom as an inducement to win a tough contest. He then came to England with the intention of becoming a professional pugilist and fighting the seemingly invinciple champion of England, Tom Cribb. This he eventually did, on two occasions, but both times he lost; Fraser implies that he could have won were it not for his irresistible addiction to drink and sex. He died in relative poverty and obscurity at the age of 34, while on tour in Ireland. This is an unusual and fascinating story, well worth reading even if you are not particularly interested in boxing. %T Black Ajax

48. George MacDonald Fraser Interviews
Enjoy! BLOOD AND THUNDER. History Today 5th May 2000. © george macdonaldfraser. Flashman george macdonald fraser The Fancy's Man. Reprinted
http://members.aol.com/FSotUK/FLASHMAN/GMFinterviews.html
We are all interested in what gives GMF his inspiration for the Flashman books and about the man himself. Here I offer a selection of interviews culled from websites, mainly magazine and newspaper, from around the world. Enjoy! BLOOD AND THUNDER History Today - 5th May 2000 Flashman author George MacDonald Fraser explains how 'history disguised as fiction' has been his inspiration and is also his aim. `YOUR EYES ARE blinded by the sight of gold, man!' Thus Sir Daniel Darnley Darnley (or was it Darnby?), the Laughing Pirate, duelling in an Aztec treasure-house, despatching some unfortunate Spanish villain with a lightning rapier 'thrust and awakening my interest in history for the first time. I was about eight years old and until I encountered Sir Daniel in a D.C. Thomson 'tuppenny blood' my acquaintance with the past had been limited to the odd Bible story, Greek and Norse myths, and my first school history book, The World Family. I'm sure it was an excellent primer, but all I remember of it is a couplet about Hannibal crossing the Alps because he wanted the Roman scalps, and a law of King Hammurabi's condemning arsonists to be thrown into the fire they had started, which seemed drastic, though not illogical. I became disenchanted with the book when, asked to read aloud from the last chapter which dealt with the Great War, I was mocked for my mispronunciation of 'the warring navies', which I rendered as though the last word was spelt with two 'v's, thus conjuring a picture of labourers swarming out of the trenches brandishing picks and shovels.

Fraser, George MacDonald
"After the war I was a sports and general reporter with the Carlisle Journal where I married Kathleen Hetherington, a reporter from another paper. We went to Canada together, and after a brief period in Toronto where I almost sold a set of encyclopedias to a man with a broken washing-machine, we got jobs as reporters in Saskatchewan. After a year we came home, our first son was born, and I worked as a reporter and sub-editor on the Cumberland News before we moved to Glasgow in 1953. On the Glasgow Herald I was on ... [various] sub-editing jobs ... before becoming features editor, and deputy editor from 1964 to 1969. Our daughter and second son were born in 1953 and 1957 respectively.
Advent of an Author and Screenwriter
"I had been writing on and off since the age of five, and thanks to my wife's encouragement I persevered in the hope of becoming a novelist; my first book, Flashman, was published in 1969, and I gave up newspaper work and devoted myself to being a free-lance author." And a very successful author he became as a glance at Fraser¹s bibliography will demonstrate. Among his best known works are nine sequels to Flashman which deal with some very interesting venues of the 19th century ranging from the steppes of Russia to the river valleys of Borneo, China and Africa and the Great Plains of the American West.

Flashman's Lady
George MacDonald Fraser
Another volume in the wildly entertaining, historically accurate Flashman series, this one set in Queen Ranavalona's Madagascar. After fighting pirates, fending off the Queen, chasing women and taking charge of the Malagasy army, our cowardly rogue escapes to safety with his not-so-adventurous (and obviously deluded) wife. Fraser's real-life characters include James Brooks, pirate-hunter of the South Seas. View Book Bag
