Freneau, Philip [Morin]
Freneau, Philip [Morin] (1752-1832) fulfilled the dream of his wine merchant father, Pierre Fresneau (old spelling) when he entered the Class of 1771 to prepare for the ministry. Well versed in the classics in Monmouth County under the tutelage of William Tennent, Philip entered Princeton as a sophomore in 1768, but the joy of the occasion was marred by his father's financial losses and death the year before. In spite of financial hardships, Philip's Scottish mother believed that her oldest of five children would graduate and join the clergy. Though he was a serious student of theology and a stern moralist all his life, Freneau found his true calling in literature. As his roommate and close friend James Madison recognized early, Freneau's wit and verbal skills would make him a powerful wielder of the pen and a formidable adversary on the battlefields of print. Freneau soon became the unrivaled ``poet of the Revolution'' and is still widely regarded as the ``Father of American Literature.'' Although Freneau had produced several accomplished private poems before college, it was the intense experience of pre-Revolutionary-War Princeton that turned the poet's interest to public writing. Political concerns led Madison, Freneau, and their friends

    Philip Freneau
    Philip Morin Freneau, the most versatile and vitriolic of the patriot poets, was born in New York, the son of Pierre Fresneau, a tradesman, and Agnes Watson. His father’s Huguenot (French Protestant) faith and his mother’s Presbyterianism influenced Philip to enroll at the College at Nassau (Princeton), the bastion of New Light Christianity in America. Freneau joined the American Whig Society, the more libertarian of the college’s two student clubs. There he taught himself to be a poet, mastering the techniques of satire in the paper wars against the other club, the Cliosophical Society, and the devices of polite literature in verse prepared for the commencement exercises. With fellow Whigs James Madison and Hugh Henry Brackenridge, he composed a farcical romance, Father Bombo’s Pilgrimage to Mecca

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
    Some of Philip Freneau's poems require an explanation of the changing political context of the 1770s through 1790s so that their arguments may be understood. Freneau's religious poetry, with its striking absence of scriptural allusion and Christian doctrine, may prove rather alien to students of traditional Christian background. Discriminations between the beliefs of Patriots and Loyalists, Whigs and Tories, must be supplied for the poems of the 1770s. Discussion of the split of the American revolutionaries into Federalist and Jeffersonian factions during the 1790s is also helpful. "To Sir Toby" is an excellent poem with which to examine the legal justifications of slavery employed during the late 1700s. I find that the early American political cartoons provide a useful way of introducing students to the context of Freneau's politics. (Michel Wynn Jones' The Cartoon History of the American Revolution is a good source.) Sometimes I get a reproduction of one of the newspapers in which a Freneau poem first appeared to show how closely his world view was tied to the journalism of the era.

    September 11, 1814
    by Philip Freneau Parading near saint Peter's flood
    Full fourteen thousand soldiers stood;
    Allied with natives of the wood,
    With frigates, sloops, and galleys near;
    Which southward, now, began to steer;
    Their object was, Ticonderogue. Assembled at Missisqui bay
    A feast they held, to hail the day,
    When all should bend to british sway
    From Plattsburgh to Ticonderogue. And who could tell, if reaching there
    They might not other laurels share And England's flag in triumph bear To the capitol, at Albany!!! Sir George advanced, with fire and sword, The frigates were with vengeance stored, The strength of Mars was felt on board,- When Downie gave the dreadful word, Huzza ! for death or victory ! Sir George beheld the prize at stake
