Chicks in Chainmail
(Baen, 1995)
Although bronze bras figure prominently in Chicks in Chainmail , the shapely woman warrior on the cover is wearing more of a chainmail tank top and matching loincloth. She's also wearing other bits of armor about her person, but I'm not sure what they're called although I think the things on her legs are called "greaves." (I'd ask the editor to look at the cover and help me out, but I'm afraid he'd get too, um, distracted to give me a timely answer.) These twenty variations on the Woman Warrior theme poke gentle fun even as they extend the concept beyond the "bimbo-with-a-blade," as Friesner points out in her excellent introduction. She proves her point in the sheer range of the stories that follow. Roger Zelazny's "Lady of Steel" neatly turns the tables on the tired theme of the woman disguised as a man in order to fight. "And Ladies of the Club" by Elizabeth Moon deftly demonstrates the folly of taking advantage of some of the Woman Warrior's natural attributes, particularly if some of them study law in their spare time. In "Exchange Program," Susan Shwartz sends Hillary Rodham Clinton to Valhalla, with some of the funniest laugh-out-loud lines I've ever read. Harry Turtledove informs us that being "Goddess For a Day" is not all it's cracked up to be, and "Armor-Ella" is Holly Lisle's fairy-tale twist on the genre, with slightly naughty results. What's a single mother to do when she has to take her daughter's class on a field trip to her workplace and her job description just happens to involve wearing a bronze bra and wielding a sword? Margaret Ball tells us in the extraordinarily clever "Career Day." David Vierling's "Amore/Amore" is a very funny parody of the barbarian warrior style, involving a very specific piece of armor. "The Stone of War and the Nightingale's Egg" by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough offers an unusual lesson in Chinese history or so the author and editor say.

Yesterday We Saw Mermaids by Esther M. Friesner reviewed by XXXX
Original appearance: Albedo one issue , date?
I recently stumbled across a TOR fantasy title. A slim one, by an author I had meant to try. And with a title that is in my opinion one of the most evocative I have seen in years. To be truthful I was hooked even before I read the first line.
YESTERDAY WE SAW MERMAIDS is the title in question - and also the first line. Previously, I had always been put off Friesner's novels by the fact that they had 'amusing' titles like HOORAY FOR HELLYWOOD and seemed to be attempting to masquerade as Pratchett clones. To be fair, my opinion was speculative, biased and highly personal, but if YESTERDAY had instead been called HERE BE DRAG QUEENS and featuring a recognisably Josh Kirbyesque cover I would have assumed it was a stinker, or at least not my cup of tea. Thank the Lord for that title and a restrained cover painting.
YESTERDAY WE SAW MERMAIDS is a line from the diary of Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas and though I doubted it was possible, Esther M. Freisner has done justice to that wondrous succession of words. The plot concerns a ship, propelled by magic, which has set out to reach the New World before Columbus. Upon the success of that mission rests the future of magic in the world.

  • "Men in the Rain" [permanent link] . An interesting tale about a old man who can see ghosts, especially of his old Vietnam veteran friend. Things take a dramatic turn when he ends up in the middle of a confrontation between his caregiver and her abusive boyfriend and learns how the dead can influence the living.
Found in Jan 2002 Asimov's Science Fiction "Just Another Cowboy" [permanent link] . A interesting and humorous story set on a farm in Texas that has just got a new owner. The farmhands are nervous over what she would do, especially one farmhand who has an unusual secret to hide from the outside world.

WELCOME JUMP EXPLORE THE POINT ... HOME YESTERDAY WE READ MARVELS... Yesterday we saw Mermaids by Esther M Friesner (Review by Jane Beaumont, Cape Town, South Africa) During a short, compulsory break from my Hambly-fest (library all out) I looked on my goodie shelf and found the proverbial slim volume, picked up on one of those "everything-for-one-price-clear-out-the-stockroom" sales. Possibly she's renowned in various fields but I'd never heard of Esther M Friesner. I was, however, charmed by the title. Well, good thing I chanced the odd buck because Yesterday we saw Mermaids is that rarity in fantasy, something truly new! She writes lyrically and with insight. This is the 'author', a young 15th century Spanish nun designated the scribe and chronicler, talking of an Eastern beauty:- "Nothing so lovely could go unloved, for the world is all injustice. To be plain is to await death and gloat over the grave's harsh way with beauty." There's magic (or magicks) aplenty in the book, all intermingled with snippets of history and legend. There's also great beauty as well as a shudder or two. But basically, reading it was the most innovative entertainment I've had since "The history of the world in 10½ chapters". It's a mere 154 pages long; so, if you can find it, do try and sandwich it in between the wristbending sagas. You won't regret it!

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
Alternate histories are about "what if"s, but even so I was skeptical of this one. After all, the premise is that Venus (the goddess, not the planet) comes down and convinces Brutus to save Caesar from the assassination attempt. This could be a pretty silly idea, but Friesner manages to avoid the pitfalls. Venus is not just a silly love goddess, but the more accurate serious deity of Greek mythology. And her intervention is kept to a minimum. Friesner also manages to come up with a plausible alternate historyperhaps someone more familiar with the period could pick holes in it, but I found it believable. I also found the motivations interesting, though the ending was a bit telegraphed. (Does saying that constitute a spoiler?) But Friesner is never one for the simplistic and manages to cast an unexpectedly mythic interpretation and motivation to it all. Don't dismiss this one as just another silly-premised alternate history. Unusual the premise may be, but Friesner develops it with seriousness and diligence, and more than a little philosophy. I won't argue that Shakespeare's treatment of Julius Caesar and Brutus isn't greater, but I would recommend this book to those interested in historical fantasy. Oh, and while it's true that Charleton Heston was in two film versions of Shakespeare's JULIUS CAESAR, he never played Brutus (or any of the other conspirators), which appears to be how Gary Ruddell depicted him on the cover.

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
If Esther Friesner can write something like this, why is she wasting her time on Chicks in Chainmail? Well, okay, I'm sure that Chicks in Chainmail pays the rent, while a serious novel like The Psalms of Herod pays for espresso. It's the way of the world. I could be wrong. I hope I am. But judging by the number of articles mentioning on Chicks in Chainmail on the Net (forty-one) compared to the number mentioning The Psalms of Herod (eleven, six of which are announcements from bookstores), I suspect I'm not. But back to the book. There are a couple of problems. The main problem is that turns out to be yet another first book of a bleedin' series. And there is no warning of this on the cover or anywhere in the bookexcept on the last page, where they advertise the next book, Sword of Mary, due out in October of 1996. The other problem is that I am not entirely convinced about the likelihood or even possibility of the basic assumption of the book. With a lesser author this might be more of an objection, but Friesner handles the plot and characters so well that I am willing to suspend my disbelief in this regard. I am trying to avoid revealing too much, and the result is probably somewhat incoherent. Come back and re-read this after you've read the book and it will be much clearer.
