NORTHROP FRYE
Herman Northrop Frye (July 14,1912-January 22,1991) was Canada's most famous literary critic. He was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, lived much of his boyhood in Moncton, New Brunswick, and spent most of his academic career at the University of Toronto. I was never an official student of his, but in 1973-1974 I audited two of his courses at Victoria College in the University. Frye was just back from a year teaching at Harvard. [Note: This may be a gaffe. I have learned that Frye taught at Harvard one year later, in 1974-5. Sorry.] One course I audited that year was Literary Symbolism; the other may have been Modern Poetry. That year Frye was also teaching Tudor Poetry and Prose. I would have audited that class as well, if it had been possible. But there was no room. I think I had heard of Frye before I went to university in 1967. One Christmas about then an aunt or cousin gave me a copy of The Modern Century (1967). So perhaps I had encountered Frye's work before I actually arrived at University College. Frye was a predominant spirit over the humanities section of the University. By the fall of 1967 I was interested in getting all his books. I soon bought a copy of

Northrop Frye and Myth Criticism
Introduction

Anatomy of Criticism recognised various levels of realism in literature, an articulation he termed a theory of modes. The second essay put forward a theory of symbols, recognising five levels that ranged from the mundane to the anagogic (the last represented in work of a religious or spiritual nature). how
The Architects But, as you'd expect, they are very
Impatient, the buildings, having much in them
Of the heavy surf of the North Sea, flurrying
The grit, lifting the pebbles, flinging them
With a hoarse roar against the aggregate
More burdensome, underwritten as
It were with past days overcast
And glinting, obdurate, part of the
Silicate of tough lives, distant and intricate As the whirring bureaucrats let in And settled with coffee in the concrete pallets

Anatomy look like simplicity itself. Here we see Frye engaging with the thought of the deconstructionists and linguists in a far more direct manner than in his published works. These unpublished documents, which show how much Frye still has to contribute to contemporary understanding, also reveal that he was even more varied and paradoxical than we had realized.

I first met him in this guise myself in 1960. I was going to study English Lang. and Lit. and had been advised by my high school guidance counsellor to enroll at Victoria so that I would, as they say, “get Frye.” I did get him, for several courses, and an amazing figure he was: dumpy and pastey-coloured, with an almost shifty air, as if he didn't quite belong inside this mortal envelope, he would open his mouth and in a quiet and unemphatic voice give expression to the most searching analysis, the most suggestive generalizations, the most piercing insights, all in sentences and whole paragraphs perfectly controlled and modulated. Even his witty remarks were delivered deadpan, with just the occasional quick upturn at the side of his mouth if you seemed to get the joke. Going back into the past, here's a reminiscence of Frye as a lecturer by one of his students in 1946, political columnist Douglas Fisher, who had just arrived at college under the veterans' preference with many other former soldiers:

The Department of English and the Department of Religious Studies of
McMaster University invite your submissions to a conference on the theories
and writings of the Canadian literary and cultural critic Northrop Frye
(1912-1991) to be held May 17-19, 2000.
The religious contexts of Frye's thinking have not been given sufficent
attention in either religious or literary studies. The religious elements
in Frye's writings are often used to exclude him from current debates in
criticism. This conference will give scholars an opportunity to reassess the importance of Frye's books on the Bible published late in his career. "Frye and the Word" will be a rigorous consideration of Frye's religious

Northrop Frye-Biology 150Y
Summer Research Experience Scholarship Application Information 2003

Application deadline: Monday, March 3, 2003 Organisms in their Environment received the University of Toronto's prestigious Northrop Frye Award in 1999 in recognition of the course's "distinguished achievements in linking teaching and research." The award honours the late U of T professor Hermann Northrop Frye (1912-1991), one of the twentieth century's pre-eminent English scholars and literary critics and a noted commentator on Canadian society and culture. The money received with the award was matched by the departments of Botany and Zoology, and this amount was then matched with equal contributions from the Office of the Vice President and Provost and Office of the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science, to create an endowment for a scholarship. The Northrop Frye-Biology 150Y Summer Research Experience Scholarship enables an outstanding student in BIO150Y to spend four months (May to August) in the laboratory of a faculty member working in the disciplines of evolution, ecology, or behaviour. One scholarship is awarded each year. The first scholarship was awarded in 2001. The third scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2003. Ecology in Shallow Littoral Areas of Lakes
The project will be carried out in Lake Opeongo in Algonquin Park, ON. We will be based at the Harkness Fisheries Research Laboratory (of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources), which is located directly on the lake. Room and board are covered (comfortable but rustic facilities, on-site cook prepares good meals). The student who receives the Northrop Frye-Biology 150Y Summer Research Experience Scholarship this year will be working with other students and research assistants under my direct supervision.

NORTHROP FRYE'S STUDENT ESSAYS, 1932-1938
Ed. by Robert D. Denham
Northrop Frye's assured standing as one of the 20th century's greatest literary critics is easy to explain: His criticism of literature came out of his reading and experience of literature. He did not come to a text with an abstract political or aesthetic theory that could be slapped on like a coat of paint. The archetypes and historical modes that he described were patterns he found in literature, they were not something forced upon it. Later critical theories have not been as well grounded, and have tended to come and go like flavours of the week. This collection is the third volume in the series of Frye's Collected Works. The topics range from Orphism to Romanticism, and from St. Augustine to Wyndham Lewis. It is easy to forget that the author of these essays was only in his early twenties. The system-building that characterizes such works as The Anatomy of Criticism is already well under way, and the writing itself is full of Frye's familiar confident rhythm. Intellectual influences are more obvious in student writing and these papers make it clear who the young Frye was learning from (Frazer and Spengler come up a lot) and who he was not (Freud is out). Since most of the essays were written for courses at Emmanuel College, the divinity school at the University of Toronto, there is an emphasis on the interpenetration of literature and religious thought - a theme that would dominate most of Frye's later work.
