The poet Charles Levendosky says, in a recent interview, that “one meaning must be immediately apparent on the first reading or hearingnot all the levels of meaning inherent in the poem, of course, but at least one meaning must jump out”. Unfashionable, but it certainly makes sense to the common reader, and the poet whose meaning is clear and who also happens to have an interesting subject is the one most likely to attract readers back to poetry. Gerrie Fellows’ book can be read almost in one gulp, and that is quite rare, I think.
Her subject is the history of her familynot a very unusual one, but interesting, nevertheless, to those of us who have a family history of our own and a story to tell. She is now based in Scotland, but her ancestors emigrated to New Zealand in 1850 and she grew up there. A loosely linked sequence of poems and prose passages tells the story of five generations, touching on their experiences in two continents and the changes of the last 150 years; a family tree helps us work out who is who.
Not another feminist work, I sincerely hoped, seeing the introductory quote from Adrienne Rich and the early references to “the milk of my vagina”. In fact this poet combines a “female” concern for ordinary human beings and their private histories with a “male” interest in public and social events. We move from the genteel Home Counties of England to the rawness of pioneer life. The original emigrants take their family silver and signed copies of Dickens and sail off into the unknown. Scotland and New Zealand, countries small enough to have distinctive identities, are the two main poles, but we also hear about other parts of the old British Empire and about the two great wars of the last century, in which some members of the author’s family died. Yet the focus is always on the individual’s, usually a woman’s, experience.

In addition, Fulton has written short stories, song lyrics, and critical essays, including an experimental exegesis of her poetics, "To Organize a Waterfall" ( Parnassus 1991 and reprinted in Feeling as a Foreign Language Briefly characterized, the most riveting element of Fulton's poetry is the controlled, complex exuberance of her language. Fulton's poems are dense, rich, often difficult, but with an immediacy of presence and spontaneity of wit that do not often occur in multiply layered verse; they satisfy both the ear and the mind. The "then some inbetween": Alice Fulton's feminist experimentalism
In the work of poet Alice Fulton, the effort to inscribe alternative understandings of gender generates ways of writing that fall "between" the two most widely recognized poetic camps. Keller examines how such work emerges when one rejects both the expectation that poetry follow "mainstream" conventions of expressive personal lyric and the widespread assumption that genuinely "experimental, "oppositional," or "alternative" writing necessarily takes on radically dysjunctive forms.

Reticent and passionate, elliptical yet available, Fulton's poems consider flaws and failure, touching and not touching. They are fascinated with proximity: the painter's closeness to the canvas, the human kinship with animals, the fan's nearness to the star.
