If you must possess something, own it as she does her scrubby acre, her seasonal work, the nomad's habit of messing up the grass until it looks like a careless footstep and calling the fuss a nest before laying two spotted eggs upon which to fix a native vigilance. Claim it as she claims these impatient evenings of early spring, many footsteps in the weeds. Try to acquire something of her reckless voice, the bright tines of the repeated bleeps as she declares the precise coordinates of all she wishes to conceal. If necessary, take to the air in ever more eccentric circles, as her mate does, his nosedive the last thing visible before dark. And when you move on, after the chicks have mastered their own cryptic coloring, migrate defiantly. Be glad to be done with this quarried-to-death terrain.

In a reappraisal of classic books published in 1902, three professors presented their arguments for the book most worthy of the "National Book Award of 1902," fifty years before the actual award was created in 1952. The historic books up for consideration were The Varieties of Religious Experience by William James (Cox), Owen Wister's The Virginian (Funkhouser), and Helen Keller's The Story of My Life (Pinker). Following their presentations, the panelists answered questions from members of the audience. Audience members' votes were not covered. Mr. Lydon moderated the discussion.

Girls Basketball Class A State Final Results
West Frankfort (Frankfort) 73, Mendota 67
Play-By-Play Box Score
Winning Coach Matt Hampleman (West Frankfort)
We’re very fortunate to advance. Girls basketball has really improved a lot over the last few years, and you could really see it out there today.
Overall, we did what we had to do and came out with the win. I don’t have a delay game.
This is a first time here for us. It was important to come out and hit a couple or three shots quickly. There’s no big lead that’s comfortable around here.
[In the 4th quarter] They [Mendota] spread the floor better and hit their shots.
Meredith Ramsey (#23) I was a little nervous but we played our defense. On offense, we pushed it up the floor we did a good job. I think we played with a lot of heart. We’re just looking forward to tomorrow.
Losing Coach Randy Weibel (Mendota) First of all, we got beat by a really good basketball team, a class team. They’re a good inside tea. When they came out and hit a couple of threes it threw us a curve and we had to make some adjustments. Down by 25, most teams would cash it in. I’m extremely proud of our kids for hanging in there. Once our shots started falling, we got back in the game.

A LITERARY HORSE RACE
Author(s): JENNIFER SCHUESSLER Date: November 10, 2002 Page: Section: Ideas WHEN THE ASSOCIATES OF THE BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY HELD A SPECIAL ELECTION ON WEDNESDAY FOR THE BEST BOOK OF 1902, INFORMAL ENTRANCE POLLS SUGGESTED THAT THE CROWD WAS TILTING HEAVILY NONFICTIONAL. THREE LOCAL LUMINARIES WERE THERE TO ARGUE THE ENDURING MERITS OF THREE VOLUMES PUBLISHED A CENTURY AGO: HELEN KELLER'S ``THE STORY OF MY LIFE,'' WILLIAM JAMES'S ``THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE,'' AND OWEN WISTER'S ``THE VIRGINIAN.'' MODERATOR CHRISTOPHER LYDON EXPRESSED DISGUST AT THE OMISSION OF ``WINGS OF A DOVE'' BY JAMES'S BABY BROTHER HENRY. BUT THE PANELISTS STUCK TO THEIR GUNS, AND TO THEIR CAREFULLY PREPARED NOTES.
MIT psychologist Steven Pinker led off with a paean to Helen Keller's humility and literary poise in recounting the kind of triumph over adversity which has carried many a lesser light as far as Oprah's Book Club. Erica Funkhouser, a poet from Essex, Mass., made a passionate case for Wister's classic Western novel, which launched a thousand John Wayne epics. Harvard theologian Harvey Cox, in a brilliant counter-hardsell, read a fictitious memo from a junior editor at William James's publisher. While the kind of ecstatic piety and "sweaty storefront preachers" James described would certainly have withered away in a hundred year's time, he lamented, the author's reputation left the firm with little choice but to publish these "sad symptoms of a professor gone astray."

In the spring of 1804, a party of explorers set out from St. Louis in search of the Northwest Passage, a possible water route across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Under the leadership of two starkly different commanders, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, this diverse group calling itself the Corps of Discovery was comprised of soldiers, French Canadian boatmen, a slave named York, and, eventually, an Indian woman named Sacagawea and her infant son. Together this motley crew faced hardship, danger, and the possibility of failure as they crossed a continent by boat and on foot. Along the way, they recorded in their journals hundreds of never-before-seen plants and animals, encounters with new Native American cultures, and details of their remarkable adventures. In Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan recount the story of this incredible journey; Duncan's narrative is supplemented by excerpts from the journals of various expedition members, along with contributions from
