21. All About Romance: Interview With Neil Gaiman
Neil Gaiman Man in Black (April 12, 1999). So much of what I dois daydreaming. I love the freedom of imagining. . Neil Gaiman.
http://www.likesbooks.com/neilgaiman.html
Neil Gaiman: Man in Black (April 12, 1999) "So much of what I do is daydreaming. I just shut up and listen while I'm daydreaming. I am somebody who loves imagining. I love the freedom of imagining." Neil Gaiman At the start of the year, a friend of mine alerted me to a comment made by author Neil Gaiman to the St. Louis Post Dispatch about our review of his novel Stardust . Blythe Barnhill, who wrote the review, is one of the toughest reviewers at AAR , and her B+ was high praise indeed. So when I heard that Mr. Gaiman accused AAR of, in essence, grading the book down because "it's not steamy enough," I went into investigative mode. What I discovered, of course, was that Mr. Gaiman had been shown a copy of the review in a hurry, had seen the grade and our sensuality rating, and assumed one referred to the other. Through his publicist, and later personally, he was very apologetic. Since Blythe had been so taken with his writing, I asked our other reviewers if they had read his work. I was quite surprised to discover that three of our reviewers were tremendous fans. I decided to see what all the fuss was about, and read a few of his books myself. After having read Neverwhere and Good Omens , I decided an interview would be in order. So, on SuperBowl Sunday, when the rest of the country was getting ready to hunker down for the game, I spent some time with Neil Gaiman, who has an incredible voice - dark, deep, and veddy British. The combination of that voice, the fact that he is an unabashed "bookie," and is a talented author who is equally at home writing fairy tales, graphic novels, and an hilarious book about the end of the world had me glad I did.

Journal:
Monday, March 24, 2003 Dear Mr. Gaiman,
First of all, let me apologize, for this isn't really a FAQ, but I don't know of any other way to contact you.
I am a writer, first, and a soldier second. I am awaiting deployment to Iraq, and have found the anticipation of deployment an excruciating ordeal. Being a writer, I try to make the best of it, and I write. For those who believe that for the ordinary Joe, nothing sharpens the mind like a bullet past the face, I contend that simply the thought of a bullet is enough to sharpen the mind of a writer.
I do have a point. Through these past weeks, I have been reading your journal every day. I wish I could convey to you what your journal and your writing means to this particular writer during these times, but I don't feel capable right now. So I guess all I can say is thank you.
Thank you Neil for being a writer and finding the world interesting enough, and occasionally writing about it, or of worlds like it. I used to argue to my Professors that art is as much the product of the Creator as it is the Recipient's understanding of it. That a son grows beyond the control of his parent and inspires in ways his parent never intended. But I also contend that in no way does this take away the merit of the Creator and his brilliance.
And so, Neil, I want to thank you for everything...for the stories you wrote that have lived on in my own head, revised and interpreted to my liking, and making my anticipation of a probable bullet all the less daunting.

Neil Gaiman has an international following for his dream-haunted fiction, poetry, graphic novels, and media projects. As an Interstitial writer, he has used the comic book form to create compelling literary works for the adult reader.
Good Omens
(with Terry Pratchett), the comic book series Black Orchid , and a variety of quirky publications such as Now We Are Sick: An Anthology of Nasty Verse
He then created his best known work, The Sandman: a brilliant series of dark comic books and graphic novels. These works have attained cult status with adult readers on both sides of the Atlantic (university students in particular), giving Neil the kind of celebrity usually reserved for rock stars, not writers. Sandman #19: A Midsummer Night's Dream (in collaboration with artist Charles Vess ) won the World Fantasy Award in 1991, and is particularly recommended. Neil also edited

In the last 10 years since concluding the award-winning comic book series Sandman , writer Neil Gaiman has stretched his literary legs to write a number of popular and critically-acclaimed novels, a children's book, the English-language screenplay for the Japanese film Princess Mononoke , a television series for the BBC, and too many other things to name. Gaiman has also expended a considerable amount of time and energy raising money for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), a non-profit organization which defends the First Amendment rights of artists, retailers, and other comic-book professionals.

Neil Gaiman: Adults deserve good fairy tales, too
By Jonathan D. Gaiman believes that's wrong. He should know.

Neil Gaiman may be the Shakespeare of comics. Not that he's as good as Shakespeare, necessarily, but he may end up having a similar kind of impact. Before Shakespeare, plays were not really considered literature. They were regarded by the literary establishment of the time about the same way today's academics regard, say, television sitcoms. Or comic books. During his life, William Shakespeare's reputation as a poet lay primarily on his sonnets, which today are considered pretty good but not as great as his plays. It was only after he died that his very popular plays began being taken seriously as literature. It is largely because of Shakespeare that dramatists are accorded high honors in the field of letters. Ironically, Ben Jonson, who was thought of as a superior poet during Shakespeare's day, is now primarily remembered as one of the "other playwrights" of the English Renaissance.
Gaiman has gotten more attention from the mainstream press than anybody but Art Spiegelman, and while articles about MAUS tend to treat it as a unique object, articles about Gaiman usually mention other "new voices" in comics, and point out that his major work, SANDMAN, is by no means his only contribution to the field. Some might argue that Gaiman is undeserving of such attention, that this or that favorite writer, artist or writer/artist should be hailed as the greatest, should be getting the attention. One of my English teachers thought Christopher Marlowe was twice the writer Shakespeare was, but whose name is synonymous with literary greatness?

Il personaggio
Neil Gaiman

In 30 prose and verse narratives, dark fantasist Gaiman proves that he knows how to stick to a story's point until it is thrust home. Poe would love him. He lacks Poe's grandiloquence, though, and also H. P. Lovecraft's, which he derides in "Shuggoth's Old Peculiar," one of three Lovecraftian items; the other two, by the way, feature Lawrence Talbot, the wolf man of 1940s horror movies, as a fang for hire, and "Bay Wolf," the verse one of them, mixes up Beowulf and Bay Watch what a howl! Other top-flight entries are the Raymond Carver-style "Mouse," which is barely touched by fantasy; "Tastings," a highly erotic psychic vampire sketch; and "Snow, Glass, Apples," a ghastly retelling of "Snow White." Best of show is "Murder Mysteries," in which a young man meets an angel who tells him something John Milton didn't know: what provoked Lucifer to rebel against God. A box of bonbons for dark fantasy fans, and a strong successor to Neverwhere [BKL My 15 97].
