Explore Neil Gaiman's Sandman Posted on Jul 12, 2002 - 12:06 AM Posted by Admin Posted by Admin Neil Gaiman has written a large number of graphic novels, various short stories and a tv series. His most famous creation though is The Sandman, a long running comic series with a story arc that spans right from Issue 1 to Issue 75 (the final issue). The " hero " of the series is Dream, the Sandman. He is one of the seven Endless. The others being (in no particular order) Destiny, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Death and Destruction.

Buy it online There's a boyishness about Neil Gaiman that makes you doubt the 40 years he claims. A bad boyishness, complete with a mop of unruly dark hair and on the day I met with him a black leather jacket. He wears sunglasses the whole time we speak: modishly pale ones that only just mask the intense green of his eyes. He is, he tells me at one point, the father of three: an 18-year-old, a 16-year-old and a seven-year-old. And so 40 makes more sense but, even so, you wonder at the magic he's woven to maintain his youthful mien. On the other hand, consider the work: the fantastic worlds he's created that surely require the outlook of someone who sees a universe filled with wonder everywhere he looks. And there are compensations for 40. For one thing, he is the author of an impressive body of work, the seminal Sandman series of graphic novels chief among them. But there is more: much more. The novel Good Omens

By John Krewson Writer Neil Gaiman is best known as the creator of the Sandman series of graphic novels, which helped launch DC Comics' Vertigo line and established Gaiman as one of the most innovative and thoughtful writers in the field of contemporary fantasy. His most recent works include Smoke And Mirrors , a collection of short stories; The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish , a children's book illustrated by Dave McKean; and the modern fairy tale and novel Stardust , which was recently published by Avon Books. Gaiman recently took a break from his national book-signing schedule for Stardust to speak with The Onion about fame, America, and London's sewers, and to confess to just making all that stuff up. The Onion: So, how's it going? Neil Gaiman: Well, it's sheer madness, of course, doing a signing tour at this time of year. I was really looking forward to it, a giant countrywide tour, going to the Arizonas and the Floridas and the Texases, all the nice warm places. So of course I'm signing in the Pittsburghs and the St. Louises and the Madisons. Plus a couple of days in L.A. and a couple of days here in San Francisco in the fog and the wet. O: So you normally enjoy signing tours?

Did you know? He is a friend of the singer/songwriter Tori Amos; she sings about him on her albums Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink and Boys for Pele. Plus, he once wrote a biography of Duran Duran. Critical verdict As a genre writer, it has taken Neil Gaiman some time to win round the literary critics. Now that "comic book writers" have become "graphic novelists", he is winning plaudits away from the fields of horror and fantasy, where he has always attracted critical acclaim and numerous awards for his work. His monthly cult horror series, Sandman, which sold over a million copies a year, was described by Norman Mailer as "a comic strip for intellectuals". He tends to be praised more for his imagination, which is rich, dark and very twisted, than the quality of his writing, which veers towards efficient rather than poetic. Following The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish and Coraline, he is also increasingly known and respected as a children's author.

From the back cover of the paperback (cover not shown):
In the tiny village called Wall, things are not quite what they seem... In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for six hundred years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, he makes a rash promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life. From the back cover of comic: Our story begins in Wall, a village at the crossroads bordering Faerie, where the mortal and magical mingle once every nine years in an enchanted meadow to exchange goods and services. When Dunstan Thorn goes to the Faerie market to find a token for his love, a chance encounter with one of the Fair folk changes his life and love...forever.

    got a question for ya..
Being that you're a good friend of Tori Amos.. and given the fact that your friendship with her is very well known among the public and the fans of Tori and you.. how often do you get asked about her? Do you ever get tired of people who interview you asking questions such as: "so, seen Tori lately? how's she doing? how's her daughter? you ARE her kid's godfather, aren't you? what's the word on the new album? you gonna write anything for it?" etc.?
Have you ever had to fight back the urge to lose your cool and yell "ENOUGH ABOUT TORI! Aren't we supposed to be talking about ME"
Not at all. I get easily bored talking about me, after all, so I don't mind at all when people want to ask about Tori, any more than I mind if they want to ask about Terry Pratchett, or Dave McKean, or Yoshitaka Amano, or Kelly Link or... well, the list is long, and I never mind being asked about my friends. At a normal signing of three or four hundred people, there will be three or four extremely Tori fans in the line, and if there's a new album coming out they'll ask if I've heard it and if it's any good, and I'll tell them, and sometimes they just want to know if I really am the same Neil she sings about, or just if I've seen her recently, and I'm perfectly happy to answer. (Anyway, I figure one-in-a-hundred people are asking her the same questions about me in her meet-and-greet lines, just as they're asking Terry Pratchett if there'll ever be a sequel to Good Omens...)
