Since then, she's followed up with her 1991 novel, Two Girls, Fat and Thin (Vintage), and her short fiction appears regularly in Harpers, The New Yorker, and many "best of" collections. 50. Beyond 10/92: Mary Cahill, David Lodge, Dierdre McNamer, Cathie Pelletier, Anita
gaitskill, mary TWO GIRLS FAT AND THIN. Two women try to come to termswith abused (in one case) and abusive (in the other) pasts.
http://www.dreamscape.com/rebrown/fall92.htm
Beyond the Bestsellers, Fall 1992
Bawden, Nina FAMILY MONEY
Heavily ironic, a book that engages the issues of aging, memory, competence, responsibility and inheritance (in a couple of senses)but it's nowhere near as ponderous as this sounds. Is the title oxymoronic?
Busch, Frederick CLOSING ARGUMENTS
Set in upstate New York, this troubling novel explores the concept of bondage from several angles, as a post-traumatic-stressed-veteran-turned-lawyer (his code name was, suggestively, Goblin) becomes involved with the putative murderess he is assigned to defend. What, after all, is guilt? Busch here ties things up, and ties things down.
Cahill, Mary CARPOOL
Ann-Tyler-ish look at suburbia, but also, surprisingly, a murder mystery. Occasionally really funny, this is nothing profound, but it's a good read that has proven durable, with a good corpse discovery and an odd car chase.
Gaitskill, Mary TWO GIRLS FAT AND THIN
Two women try to come to terms with abused (in one case) and abusive (in the other) pasts. Curiosity (e. g. a nice send-up of Ayn Rand) mixes with hyper-realitysome pretty graphic violence. Slow to start, this symbiotic "love story" (is it really?) gains momentum as it goes.
Goldstein, Rebecca THE DARK SISTER

  • The Last Time I Wore a Dress - Daphne Scholinski

Flannery O'Connor once said, "Whenever I am asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it is because we are still able to recognize them." Even O'Connor might be taken aback, however, by some of Mitch Cullin's characters. There's Sheriff Branches in the novel/poem Branches , who throws his skinhead son in a well because he catches him poisoning dogs. Then there is Jeliza-Rose, the 11-year-old narrator of the ferociously imagined

SLIPPERY SHOALS OF LOVE... From an early age, affection-starved Elizabeth Taube, growing up on Long Island during the 1960s, is willing object of the attention of older men in Amy Bloom's first novel, Love Invents Us . Mr Klein, an elderly furrier, and later Max Stone, her high school English teacher, offer her love, which makes the confused, outcast, passive young woman feel wanted. Elizabeth becomes involved with African American high school basketball player Huddie Lester. But when Huddie's father learns of their affair, he sends his son away. The search for affection and belonging leads to a friendship with the elderly Mrs. Hill, whom Elizabeth cares for (and also steals from). Negotiating the slippery shoals of love is extremely difficult for Elizabeth, yet by novel's end the reader sees her as a more self-assured, determined middle-aged single parent. Contributed by Richard Oloizia, Assistant Head of Fiction Department, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore. Word of Mouth Author Index.
