ACCLAIMED WRITERS TO BE FEATURED AT LITERARY SYMPOSIUM
By Phyllis Carter HATTIESBURG, Miss. The University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Writers will host "The Art of the Story," a three-day literary symposium Oct. 5-7, featuring nationally acclaimed fiction writers. Among the participating writers are literary notables Rick Moody, Amy Hempel, Mary Gaitskill and Julia Slavin as well as USM's own Frederick and Steven Barthelme and Mary Robison. "You couldn't find four more important and influential story writers than Moody, Hempel, Gaitskill and Slavin," said Frederick Barthelme, director of the Center for Writers. "It's a rare pleasure to have all four of them together here on the USM campus." Rick Moody, author of three novels, a collection of short stories and, most recently, co-editor of Joyful Noise: The New Testament Revisited , has received widespread recognition for his writing. Garden State , his 1992 first novel, won a Pushcart Prize, and his 1994 best-selling novel, The Ice Storm , became a critically acclaimed Hollywood film. In his third book

    Description of Course
Short stories open a window of discovery for readers and writers alike. Writers undoubtedly discover things about themselves as they write, but they must contain themselves within the grammar of their stories if readers are to discover any "truth" in what they read. This course is designed to help writers write fiction filled with discovery, not only for themselves but also for their readers. In the workshop setting, students will be expected to craft, sentence by sentence, stories that become unique, even surprising. Accordingly, as students write and rewrite their stories, they will be encouraged to write each sentence so that it (1) plays an integral part in the story, (2) is derived directly from the previous sentence, and (3) affects the reader. Additionally, students will learn to slow the telling of their stories by developing a defined stance. Rather than concentrating on relating the "news" of the story, they will work on establishing (via language) their authority as writers in their stories. Special emphasis will be placed upon developing strong narrative voices. The first half of the course will focus on technical aspects of writing (dialogue, characterization, point of view, etc.). In the second half, using Booth's

NOTES ON THE ARTISTS Bob Callahan writes "The Dark Hotel." The concept was his in the first place. He is the editor of "The New Comics Anthology," and his many books include "Who Shot JFK: A Guide to the Major Conspiracy Theories." Within hours after NYPD forensics had finished its work and the Chelsea Hotel had opened it up for rent again, he once found himself staying in the same room where Sid Vicious had just taken his own life. Nothing has been the same for him since. Spain Rodriguez draws "The Dark Hotel" and its employees. Spain also drew "The Manchurian Experiment" story. With Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams and Victor Moscoso, Spain is one of the creators and publishers of the original Zap Comics magazine. He has recently completed a 144-page adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham's "Nightmare Alley" for Avon Paperback's Neon Lit graphic crime novel series. Two important Spain collections are available from Fanatagraphics. Justin Green drew and helped to adapt "At the Pinnacle," a selection from the novel "Two Girls, Fat and Thin" by Mary Gaitskill. Green is the author of one of the true masterpieces of the underground comics movement, "Binky Brown Meets the Blessed Virgin Mary." Both "Binky" and a collection of Green's short fictions are available from Last Gasp Comics.

As their relationship develops, fat Dorothy and thin Justine come to reveal what lies beneath the surface of their suburban childhoods and has made them into the lonely adults they are today. Mary Gaitskill, 'Because They Wanted To'
It's easy to see how Mary Gaitskill has gotten tagged as a writer specializing in "dark" preoccupations. In one story in this splendid new collection, the heroine has an affair with a woman dabbling in dominance. Her lover strikes her across the face, starts to unzip and then says, "Um, Susan? Is this cool?" It's a startling, touching moment of true human contact, more intimate than their subsequent intimacies. Gaitskill's characters do their share of plain and fancy coupling, but her true subject is their essential disconnectedness and their sometimes pathetic, sometimes heroic solitude. And despite her "dark" reputation, she's alive to the comic possibilities of compulsion. "Because They Wanted To" is too rich to read at a sitting, yet it's too compelling not to. There's more to Gaitskill than simple unrelenting heaviosityand she's a writer who's apt to pull just about anything.
