Interview with Tess Gallagher
Listen to the Tess Gallagher interview with Don Swaim, 1986 (24 min. 26 sec.) In this 1986 interview with Don Swaim, Tess Gallagher talks about growing up as the child of a logger in the Pacific Northwest. She remembers the stillness of the forests and the larger-than-life images of the trees. Remembering the past forms the basis of many of her poems. She reads her poem, "Sudden Journey" and talks about the influence of her husband, Raymond Carver, on her writing. It's all right to be a little lost when reading poems, says Tess Gallagher. It's not necessary to understand everything. It's important not to lose a sense of the unknown. Poems don't always give themselves all at once. Download Free RealPlayer

Tess Gallagher Orange Sutra
I wanted to take you in, peel and all,
with the mind's all-swallowing
mouth. But the mind prefers
unoranging the orange
until a segment unhinges
and shines upright
in the night sky, unaware
of the night or of its own shining.
In such a way the mind makes a darker thing
of night's conception of itself. Its crescent admonishes lamentation as a temporary setback, mindful of the round, the moon's fullness, from which it came and from which it draws power to increase or disappear into us, entirely. Gone full again, how orange are you, Orange, now that a moon mistakes you for its daughter? Just as I thought: you are a wisecrack in the abundance of the night's spiraling obituary, willing to carry us with you like poor relations, until we run out of pretexts, alterations and gambits. If I choose to live in mind of you, it will be known only on the blackboard of a thought's mad all-over grammar

Sudden Journey
Maybe I'm seven in the open field
the straw-grass so high
only the top of my head makes a curve
of brown in the yellow. Rain then.
First a little. A few drops on my
wrist, the right wrist. More rain.
My shoulders, my chin. Until I'm looking up
to let my eyes take the bliss.
I open my face. Let the teeth show. I
pull my shirt down past the collar-bones. I'm still a boy under my breast spots. I can drink anywhere. The rain. My skin shattering. Up suddenly, needing to gulp, turning with my tongue, my arms out running, running in the hard, cold plentitude of all those who reach earth by falling. The Kiss Takes Confession
by Tess Gallagher
He was a man between two women,
that condition of amplitude guaranteed
to overvalue. He basked quietly
in their desperate spillover
meant to hold him. With honesty
as policy he'd kept each informed
about the other, as if honesty could convert duplicity to some well-meaning by-product of his foamy approximation at consideration. He glimpsed in himself the pride of "character" which he recirculated between them as sauce to himself, an accolade meant to disarm their chief suspicion, that he would have it all, and scant of guilt. The kiss, like a devouring beauty, perched on his knee as he turned the pages of his scrapbook. There stood his young wife, glowing like a lily, translucent in the blue frieze of time, next to their child. She does not know fate will comb her skull with ashes. How radiantly she wears the waxy glow of the candle assaulted by its flame! She was never, he confessed with a sigh, his soul mate, though the years had "coded

Interview With Tess Gallagher
by T.L. Kelly Tess Gallagher describes herself as "kind of a ptarmigan of a poet" when she is writing. Ptarmigans live at the top of alpine mountains and are completely tame when one happens upon them because no one goes there. Gallagher's "alpine mountain" is a small house on a promontory just outside of Port Angeles, Washington, a house dominated by windows and light, with a sweeping view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It is the house she and Raymond Carver built as a writing retreat and romantic hideaway. Though devastated by Carver's death from cancer in 1988, Gallagher returned to writing and recently had two new collections published, Moon Crossing Bridge and Portable Kisses. Moon Crossing Bridge is a journey through mourning and the new belongings and recognitions such loss of a life companion and love allows. Portable Kisses is the continuation of the light and resolve which was begun near the conclusion of Moon Crossing Bridge. Gallagher's temperament, humor and wit are present again. Though she is a ptarmigan about her physical and spiritual habitat, Gallagher's writing, spanning two decades, one collection of essays, one of short stories and a screenplay with Raymond Carver, is bold and spirited and often punctuated with a sting. "I aim for the spine, " she says of her intent. "I want you to feel a little chill when you finish a poem of mine. " T.L. Kelly: Sky House...it's very comfortable here.

Gallagher, Tess Candle, Lamp and Firefly
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Caregivers Death and Dying Family Relationships ... Memory Summary "What I remember most: you did not want / to go." The poet searches her memory for the scenethe dying man "like a cut rose / on the fifth day" turns into himself, drops, and deepens. She visualizes his weak arms embracing her, as she asks: "Is it good / where you are?" The word "daughter" echoes again and again, as she feels her father's body turn cold and pull away. In the end "I carry no proof that we met." Is the memory of this moment simply a dream? Or did this last embrace really happen? [42 lines] Commentary A first reading of this poem immediately evokes the intense relationship between Tess Gallagher and her husband Raymond Carver . One visualizes Carver, dying of lung cancer and being cared-for by Tess in their Port Townsend, Washington, home. But then come the words "daughter, daughter." In fact, this poem, published more than two years before Raymond Carver's demise, evokes a dream or memory of the poet's dying father.
