He said, "That was very unsatisfying. . . . Why did the oracle not make clear which of these happened?"
Rima said, "What are you talking about?"
"The oracle's account of my life before Unthank. He's just finished it."
Rima said firmly, "In the first place that oracle was a woman, not a man. In the second place her story was about me. You were so bored you fell asleep and obviously dreamed something else."
    Lanark
I first encountered Alasdair Gray's work at a friend's house. It was the middle of a not-good time for me. Suffering from a tenacious depression that made most attempts at talking, getting out of bed, everything really, seem nothing more than variations on a theme of wasting time, I nonetheless persisted with reading because (1) it reminded me there had been things I enjoyed previously and (2) I hoped reading might, sooner or later, turn up something that might help. I wasn't sure how it was going to do this exactly but the hope lingered nonetheless. Off and on, without enthusiasm, I visited people. On one such visit, I fell over Lanark.

Home Page The Trick is to Notice the World
Below is a story recounting my first contact with Ms. Janice Galloway in the spring of 2000. She made a huge impact on me, both in person, as a reader of her own material, as a workshop leader, and on the page. In my description of her work, I fell into the easy phrase 'urban and gritty' ouch! I recall when writing it that it felt like a huge cliche, but I blasted on in my excitement. Subsequently, I read an interview with Janice in which she describes her displeasure at the use of the phrase 'urban, gritty' to describe her work. It simply drops the work in a neat slot from which it then must struggle to release itself. Boy, did I get the creeps. I wrote her immediately, and we discussed the foulness of cliche. I told her I would immediately move to correct my own usage. Well it has taken me this long to get to it. But here I am. Instead of correcting the cliche in the text, I decided to add this in order to call attention to it. Janice's work is far beyond 'urban and gritty'. It sends the mind in a search for the right words, as her fiction is so precise and true to itself and the experiences it encompasses. 'Phenomenological', comes to mind, in the sense of rigorously bringing to attention the fine grain and textures of a psyche embodied in the everydayness of life, working, as we all do, at the business of answering the question: What am I to do with me? ovelist and short fiction writer Janice Galloway

This is a book of love stories. Having said that, were Dame Barbara Cartland to settle herself down on a chaise longue with a bag of mint imperials and open the deceptively pink and heart adorned cover, she would, quite probably, choke but the subject of Galloway's book is indeed love in all its forms. In this her second book of short stories perfect romantic love is noticeable by its absence. This is love in many guises. Love as reality. Love despite knowing better, love in confusion, love under black skies and amidst broken glass and rusty wires. In 'A Night In' love is glorious lust as a couple break into a boarded up house under lighting and rain. Oblivious. Whereas in 'Valentine' a couple go through the motions. The full works: tacky furry lingerie, pink card, singing Italian waiters and she longs for something else without knowing what. In 'Proposal' a couple visit his parents. This is absence of love, a relationship of negotiations, itchiness and dancing to different tunes. She can't get him to talk to her and he has nothing to say. These are love affairs with second best or tenth best but often making the best. Galloway charts the stages of relationships like suns igniting into yellow giants and then back through decay as black stars. She tears through the let-downs like an avenging angel. 'Where You Find It' may make you wonder 'why bother?' But then you might read 'No-one Kisses Like Derek'. His ability to kiss ("good kissers don't grow on trees") and his tongue, "like an engorged mollusc", is discussed by two girls like boys discussing Pele's ability to bend a 90 yard volley. Time to lie down, Dame Barbara.

Clara
by Janice Galloway Pianos are not pleasant objects - not if you've ever tried playing one. Pianos are infuriating brutes, heavy as thunderclouds: torture mechanisms designed to measure your inadequacy against some unattainable idea of perfection. Clara Schumann's life was a perpetual torment of pianos. She was born into a family which dealt, taught and traded in pianos. She married a man who was one of the greatest composers for the instrument. And she herself was one of the outstanding concert pianists of the age. This much had been decided before she had even been born. Clara Schumann had no option but to become a prodigy. Her father, Friedrich Wieck, was the most respected - and tyrannical - piano teacher in Leipzig; Clara bore the brunt of his expectation. The first entry in Clara's diary, dated June 7 1827, reads: "Since the decision has been made that this life will be remarkable, someone must record it." In fact, Friedrich had begun keeping the journal on his daughter's behalf. A later entry in his stern handwriting observes: "Father deserves my greatest devotion and gratitude for his ceaseless efforts on my behalf."
