Real Wonder by James Galvin This is Michael Carey for Voices from the Prairie Real Wonder In the stunned little interval Between winter and spring. Like the held gasp of surprise Preceding real wonder, Green stirs low down and shows Through dead blond shocks of grass, And gray aspen flowers dangle Above old snowbanks: I go around like a feral saint. What I've Believed In by James Galvin This is Michael Carey for Voices from the Prairie a weekly sampling from the rich soil of Iowa’s literary tradition. Today’s poet is James Galvin originally from a ranch in Wyoming where he returns when he isn’t teaching at the Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. At first glance, this finely-crafted prose piece seems to be about an old junked car left to rot in the woods, a car that for years used to power a saw at the local lumberyard. If you listen closely, however, with your heart and your mind you will feel how this poem is really about faith and hope and the mysterious reason for being on this earth that may one day just clearly present itself to each and every one of us. Dr. Galvin is a principal at eList eXpress LLC, an email and elist service provider he founded in 1997. Prior to that he worked for 5 years as the Chief Technologist at CommerceNet, a non-profit membership-based consortium that worked in partnership with its members to promote and facilitate the global advancement of electronic commerce. It is widely accepted that the use of tobacco is dangerous to a person’s health. Furthermore, even tobacco companies agree completely that youths should not engage in smoking. However, the solutions that have been proposed by anti-smoking advocates are fundamentally flawed in their logic. The proposed solutions are bandaid solutions that make themselves feel as though they have accomplished a great feat for humanity. The anti-smoking zealots have implemented many anti-smoking policies, however they have been a parade of abysmal failures. Many of the anti-smoking advocates have proposed more money to educate the youth about the health effects of smoking. It is necessary to maintain a level of education about tobacco to ensure an informed decision about the decision to smoke. However, the anti-smoking lobby admits that education fails miserably. The lobby would not advocate more money for a program that would solve in totality. Additionally, the public knows how detrimental smoking can be to their health. In fact, smokers overestimate the health costs of smoking more than non-smokers.
