Lorca's first theatrical production, The Butterfly's Evil Spell (1920), opened at the Eslava Theater in Madrid. Although the show closed after only one night, it gave Lorca his first taste of theatrical fame. He published his first book of poems in 1921, and seven years later, his book of poetry Romancero Gitano or The Gypsy Ballads made him famous throughout Spain. The public soon labeled Lorca as the "Gypsy poet", which displeased Lorca, and perhaps partly to dispel this myth, he moved to New York in 1929 to study English at Columbia University where he came into contact with amateur theatre groups and professional repertory companies. The trip also inspired a book of poetry, Poet in New York , which was published posthumously. Lorca returned to Spain in 1931 and formed his own theatre company. Composed mostly of students, "La Barraca" toured the countryside giving free performances of the Spanish classics, including the works of Lope de Vega , and Miguel de Cervantes. The company also produced the three "rural tragedies" on which Lorca's theatrical reputation rests.

page: His books continue to sell, and his plays are staged and applauded every year. Since his murder in 1936 at the hands of Spanish fascist forces, Lorca has become a legendary tragic hero. One cannot help speculating about Lorca's unfulfilled projects, the many more works he had planned to write and would have written had he not been the victim of a death that to this day is still clouded with controversy. Equally controversial are the thinly veiled homosexual motifs and themes present in Lorca's work that have long been intentionally silenced and overlooked by those wishing not to "soil" the reputation of one of Spain's most respected bards; among them, the Franco regime, the Lorca family, and homophobic Lorquian scholars who have dedicated their lives and careers to Lorca's work yet refuse to acknowledge a line of criticism that takes into account homoerotic desire.

page: Sonnets of Dark Love Lorca's Sonnets of Dark Love , written in November 1935 and long suppressed by Lorca's family, were first published in a clandestine edition of 250 numbered copies in December 1983. As a result of this mysterious printing, Lorca's family was apparently pressured to finally officially publish the eleven sonnets in March 1984 in the Spanish newspaper ABC Curiously, what was most controversial were not the poems themselves, in which the beloved's sex or gender is never explicitly identified, but rather the title of the cycle of poems. The Lorca family wished to entitle the cycle Sonetos Sonnets ) or Sonetos de amor Love Sonnets ), the latter being the title under which they finally appeared in ABC and in the new 1986 Aguilar edition of Lorca's complete works. Apparently, the title
