    Samuel Hopkins was born April 9, 1753 in Albemarle County, Virginia and died September 16, 1819 in Henderson County, Kentucky. He was the son of Samuel Hopkins and Isabella Taylor. He married Elizabeth Branch Bugg January 10, 1783 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Elizabeth was born about 1756 and died about 1831. She was the daughter of Jacob Bugg and Majory Branch Goode. Samuel and Eizabeth Hopkins had eight children.

    Interior of Pilaster House, Hannibal, MO . Home to Samuel Clemens in 1846-47. John Marshall Clemens died upstairs in this house in 1847. The kitchen in the restored "Garth's Woodside Mansion" on a country road on the outskirts of Hannibal. Samuel Clemens was a guest at the house in 1882: "I have spent three delightful days in Hannibal, loitering around all day long, examining the old localities and talking with the grey-heads who were boys and girls with me 30 or 40 years ago. It has been a moving time. I spent my nights with John and Helen Garth, three miles from town, in their spacious and beautiful house. They were children with me, and afterwards schoolmates."
