Gascoigne, George c.1539-77. Gascoigne was born at Cardington in Bedfordshire and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. After Cambridge he entered Gray's Inn and became Member of Parliament for Bedford for two years in 1557. He married Elizabeth Breton, a widow and the mother of the poet Nicholas Breton, in 1561. He spent some time at court and knew Edmund Spenser , then served with the English forces in the Netherlands for two years (1572-74). Gascoigne led a dissipated life and never completed his training for the Bar; he spent some of that period in a debtors' prison. His early death occurred at Stamford, where he is buried. Gascoigne did not achieve a major place in English literature but he contributed much to the climate in which succeeding greater figures flourished. In 1573, in A Hundredth Sundrie Flowers Bounde up in One Small Poesie, he introduced the sonnet sequence and he uses prose narrative in The Adventures of Master F. J. The Posies of George Gascoigne Esquire (1575) contains much that appeared in the first book; it also contains the first critical essay on poetry in English, Certayne Notes of Instruction; Dan Bartholomew of Bathe

George Gascoigne
Gascoigne's Lullaby
Sing lullaby, as women do,
Wherewith they bring their babes to rest;
And lullaby can I sing to,
As womanly as can the best.
With lullaby they still the child,
And if I be not much beguiled,
Full many wanton babes have I,
Which must be stilled with lullaby. First, lullaby my youthful years,
It is now time to go to bed;
For crooked age and hoary hairs
Have won the haven within my head. With lullaby, then, youth be still, With lullaby, content thy will, Since courage quails and comes behind, Go sleep, and so beguile thy mind. Next, lullaby my gazing eyes, Which wonted were to glance apace; For every glass may now suffice To show the furrows in my face. With lullaby, then, wink awhile, With lullaby, your looks beguile, Let no fair face nor beauty bright Entice you eft with vain delight. And lullaby my wanton will, Let reason's rule now reign thy thought, Since all too late I find by skill How dear I have thy fancies bought. With lullaby, now take thine ease

AND IF I DID, WHAT THEN? by: George Gascoigne (1525?-1577)
    " ND if I did, what then?
    Are you aggriev'd therefore?
    The sea hath fish for every man,
    And what would you have more?"
    Thus did my mistress once,
    Amaze my mind with doubt;
    And popp'd a question for the nonce
    To beat my brains about.
    Whereto I thus replied:
    "Each fisherman can wish
    That all the seas at every tide
    Were his alone to fish.
    "And so did I (in vain)
    But since it may not be,
    Let such fish there as find the gain,
    And leave the loss for me.
    "And with such luck and loss
    I will content myself,
    Till tides of turning time may toss
    Such fishers on the shelf.
    "And when they stick on sands,
    That every man may see,
    Then will I laugh and clap my hands,
    As they do now at me."

As a general rule, the texts below are most helpful if you want to perform concordance-like tasks. If you are interested in reading the whole of a text, that is much better done in book form. If you cannot find a book in the Library or Reading Room, you might also try consulting the Chadwyck-Healey English Poetry and English Verse Drama databases, both of which are held on CD-ROM. The Library also has a selection of texts from the Short Title Catalogue on microfilm. These can be read and copied out on the microfilm readers towards the main entrance. Using your browser's 'find' command will probably be the most convenient way to find a book. Please be aware that while some of these texts are well edited, others are not. • Henry R. Plomer declared George Gascoigne's A Hundreth Sundrie Flowres (1573) "one of those bibliographical eccentricities which it seems hopeless to explain," and the printer's preface to Gascoigne's text notes, with comic understatement, that the book has "a greater commoditie than common poesies have ben accustomed to present"(4). Gascoigne's collection includes the first Italian-style comedy in English, Supposes Jocasta , a tragedy deriving from Euripides; poems in numerous verse forms and on diverse topics (Psalm translations; protestations of love; descriptions of hunting and of gardens; celebrations of individual aristocrats); a marriage masque; and Gascoigne's most famous work, The Adventures of Master F.J.
