John Gay

Playwright England Born Sep 1685
Died 4 Dec 1732
John Gay was born at Barnstaple in Devon. In 1708 he published 'Wine', a poem to celebrate the Act of Union between England and Scotland. His farce, 'The What D'Ye Call It', followed in 1715. His 'Trivia, or the Art of Walking the Streets of London' (1716) is now seen as a classic.
Gay is best known for his ballad opera, 'The Beggar's Opera' (1728). With music by the German composer Pepusch, the play satirised the political establishment by focusing on the London underworld, and corruption in general. It was an instant success and ran for several seasons. In his last years Gay lived mainly with two of his patrons, the Duke and Duchess of Queensberry in Wiltshire. He returned to London in 1732, and there died suddenly. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.

Gay, John 1685-1732, English playwright and poet, b. Barnstaple, Devon. Educated at the local grammar school, he was apprenticed to a silk mercer for a brief time before commencing his literary career in London. The first of his writings to have any real merit were the mock pastoral, The Shepherd's Week (1714), and Trivia (1716), an amusing description of London life. He is remembered chiefly today for his ballad opera, The Beggar's Opera (1728), a lighthearted story of highwaymen and thieves, which satirizes both the corruption of contemporary genteel society and the then current fashion for Italian opera. Its sequel, Polly, written the following year, was suppressed by Sir Robert Walpole since it (like The Beggar's Opera ) ridiculed his government. Gay was also the author of two books of verse called Fables (1727, 1738), which were very popular in his generation. See his poetical works edited by G. C. Faber (1926, repr. 1969); study by P. A. Spacks (1965).

Over Texas, it mysteriously disintegrated as it streaked back to earth. WAKE UP AMERICA!!! THERE WERE NO TERRORISTS FOR YOU TO BLAME THIS ON at 200,000 feet traveling at MACH 18!!!! "And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?" Numbers 14:11 Further Proof that God Hates America America = Babylon = Iraq The simple fact of the matter is, Bush is being sent a strong delusion, so that he can spiral America further down his path of perversion, drawing ever closer to her destruction. The area that is today Iraq was once known as Babylon. Anyone with half a brain and an ability to read the Bible knows that Babylon is the spiritual enemy of God's people, and the center of all that is evil, the Type used in the Bible to represent the final judgment of God against all that have rejected Him. Why would Bush, if not to position himself this way, want anything to do with running Babylon? Only the purely evil would partake on such a folly, and that gives us further proof of God's hatred for this evil nation.

(John Gay's self-written epitaph) John Gay was born in Devon in 1685. He died in 1732 and was buried in Westminster. He was briefly an apprentice to a silk merchant in London. As an apprentice he became familiar with London. Although he disliked it, his years as an apprentice provided him with much of the material for his success. When his apprenticeship was complete, he returned to Devon. To pursue success as a writer he once again went to London in 1707 or 1708. Gay worked for a time as a secretary for Arthur Hill, a friend from Barnstable Grammar School. Hill was very interested in the theatre and became manager of a company owned by William Collier, then a Tory member of Parliament. Although the job lasted only two years, Gay - as Hill's secretary - gained invaluable experience. Writers of the time were dependent upon wealthy patrons to support them and their works. Gay inherited a small sum from his brother and in 1712 obtained a position with the Duchess of Monmouth. Through this position he became acquainted with those who would later become his patrons, most importantly, the Duke and Duchess of Queensberry. By this time he had also come to the attention of Alexander Pope and the Scriblerus circle. Although he produced two plays

mericans have rewritten the Declaration of Independence a thousand times since it was signed in 1776. The concepts that "all men are created equal" and that we are endowed with rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are inaccurate according to Thomas Jefferson, the author of these words. Their purpose was to prompt Americans to constantly reexamine our liberties and to promote these ideals until they equal truth (Boyer et al. 158). As America has developed, we have awarded women suffrage, presented African Americans with equal opportunities and granted homosexuals the right to join in civil unions. With each transformation, we rewrite a truth that more closely resembles our ideals. The daring few who advocate justice to an unenlightened majority are the heroes and progressive sculptors of our living Declaration. In 1967, a group of these bold Americans congregated outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia to crusade for the idyllic liberties of which Thomas Jefferson wrote. In an era where most gays tried to hide their "sinful and sick" identities in miserable heterosexual marriages (Galas 18), a black and white placard was held high: "Fifteen million U.S. homosexuals ask for the right to the pursuit of happiness" (Galas 16). Since 1967, gays have endured failed lawsuits and unfavorable legislation in their campaign for gay marriage. But in 2000, Vermont’s Governor Howard Dean signed a landmark bill finally awarding homosexuals the freedom they had been fighting for.

    About Our Community
T he Order of Saint John the Divine was founded on All Saints Day, November 1, 1994, by Father Richard G. Roy. In addition to Father Roy, the members of the original community were Bishop David C. Strong, Mother Elizabeth McCabe and Brother Stephen K. Peterson. Following his election, Father Roy was formally blessed and installed as first abbot for the order by Bishop Strong on April 22, 1995 at St. John’s American Episcopal Church in New York City.
We are a canonical religious community of The National Catholic Church of America (NCCA) for men and women called to a life of prayer and apostolic activity in a more inclusive Catholic tradition. Our distinctive feature, or "charism", is expressed in the Order's motto, "Unity in Diversity."
