ANDREW GALLIX ASKS ALISTAIR GENTRY IF GLOBALIZ(S)ATION IS HAVING AN IMPACT ON LITERATURE A SHORT ANSWER To give a short answer to a question that could be (and I'm sure has been) unpacked and picked apart at book length: Yes. A SLIGHTLY LONGER ANSWER To give a slightly longer answer: Yes, and quite right too. Literature is acting like any healthy cultural artefact does. It's absorbing new material, eating itself and vomiting up new work, reaching out for new brains to live in and new ways to speak. The only static art forms are dead ones, just like the only cultures not in flux are long dead. PRISSY RED PEN ANNOTATIONS One of the worrying things about globalisation is actually more about Americanisation, and the proliferation via software of a pusilanimous, non-litigious, euphemistic form of American English where confrontation and difference become (1984-style) unspeakable and therefore unthinkable (e.g. the heinous Microsoft Word with its prissy red pen annotations). But even this kind of unpleasantness helps us in a way, because it feeds the growing worldwide realisation that the international military-industrial-entertainment complex is bad for all but a tiny minority of us, and lethal for many of us. We've got what we need from them. Thanks for the internet. Thanks for the computer I'm writing this on. Thanks for the CDs. We know how to make them now. Oh and close the door on your way out, capitalists.

Remember last issue, and our item on the new software that spews out verse by the dozen? Well this time it’s for short story writers to start worrying about their survival. Brutus , a computer with a mildly aggressive name, can produce up to one new story every 15 seconds. Its creator, Selmer Bringsjord, spent seven years devising his creature, but it is a pretty impressive performance all the same. Many people, when asked to spot one of Brutus’s stories amid a collection of human-written ones, fail to do so. This was the case of Giles Gordon, Fay Weldon’s literary agent. For the moment, however, Brutus can only write about hate and betrayal, concepts, which can be boiled down mathematical models. The problem as we see it is: will they find an audience ready to gobble down one betrayal story every 15 seconds? And if not, what’s the use of all this? Maybe they’ll have to create a robot reader, so that human beings can go on being lazy and pursuing more philistine ends. We’re on the road to efficiency.

The content usually derives from an interest in and concern over the degree to which many people ignore the surveillance and information technology that now cocoons them twenty-four hours a day. NONAMBIENT www.mediascot.org NonAmbient is an infinite, self-generating sound work about the motorised, mechanical, electrical and electronic voices of the environments we build and create for ourselves. Through examining and digitally processing many hours of recordings made in and around Stirling, sounds have been extracted, magnified and looped to become components of a greater whole. Some of these sounds are recognisable and familiar, but others come from frequencies and levels of volume beyond normal human hearing or awareness. There are nearly one million possible permutations of the sounds that have been discovered through this process. The software will navigate its way through all of them eventually.
