Stirling
Changing Room
Alistair Gentry NonAmbient 30 September to 18 November 2000 NonAmbient is an infinite, self-generating sound work about the motorised, mechanical, electrical and electronic voices of the environments we build and create for ourselves. Through examining and digitally processing many hours of recordings made in and around Stirling, sounds have been extracted, magnified and looped to become components of a greater whole. Some of these sounds are recognisable and familiar, but others come from frequencies and levels of volume beyond normal human hearing or awareness. There are nearly one million possible permutations of the sounds that have been discovered through this process. The software will navigate its way through all of them eventually. Alistair Gentry is a writer and artist. Previous work includes experimental programmes for radio, digital images, short stories, and two novels. NonAmbient is a natural progression from and complement to the other projects he has worked on. These include The Story of My Life in T-shirts, an experimental, semi-random documentary for BBC radio about favourite clothes. Alistair¹s novels, and the web site 100 Black Boxes concern things that are hidden in plain sight, and a search for a meaningful way to live in a world where so much can never be known. These hidden, unknown things may be sounds, images, stories, histories; they may be the means that those in power use to manufacture and direct our behaviour; they may be our own urges and true agendas; they may even be people, the ones we choose not see, or the ones who hide themselves from us. These concerns and strategies inspired and informed NonAmbient, a work which drags sounds and information from their hiding places and puts them where they can¹t be ignored.

HYPNOMART
Alistair GENTRY, Joe MAGEE E-mail: gentry@btinternet.co.uk
URL: http://www.gentry@btinternet.com/
http://www.periphery.co.uk/

Organization: gentry@btinternet.co.uk
Statement of the work:
Hypnomart depicts the rituals of shoppers as observed by security cameras in a shopping mall. The artists have used this covert footage as source material for their own manipulations of unsuspecting consumers.
In these comprehensively surveilled and clinical retail environments tiny gestures are magnified and transmit virally through the crowd. Are the shoppers in Hypnomart just buying things or are they fulfilling other, more primordial needs? Observing people as they go about their shopping often reveals an apparent state of hypnosis; malls are designed to be (or at least appear) contained and safe. The proliferation and awareness of cameras heightens the sense that one is on a set, and on display. Is this justified surveillance or authoritarian voyeurism? Whether the subjects of surveillance are shopping in a trance or enacting compulsive rituals for the cameras, sometimes they align themselves in patterns like microbes or herds, or create dances that last mere seconds.
The film was commissioned by the Arts Council of England and Channel 4 Television. Characters were selected from hours of DV footage and removed from their original environments to generate loops of movement and behaviour. The mall was then re-populated to create a bizarre yet logical new environment. Sampled sounds from the mall were similarly selected, manipulated and reorganised. The film was entirely made by digital means. It was first broadcast on British national television in November of 2001.

Alistairs, Princes Street Alistair Mackenzie, the cheery man with the shop-keeping mam reigned on the corner of Princes Street and Glasgow Street for over 5 years in the early eighties. Be-spectacled and always up for a genial conversation - Alistair was the Raymond Loughrie of newsagents; bought the shop after the financial failure of his toy shop in Countess Street, Saltcoats.
Featuring shelves stocked with everything from Amateur Rectologist to Wino's Weekly , the shops focal point was furlongs adrift from the town's down market aspirations and desires. Above : Feb 2000. Once the gentry of the town's corner shops - the building benefits from a facial make-over - but has sadly declined along with the town. This is where to stand if you've got nothing better to do, and no money for Carlsberg Special Brew. In 1986 Alistair allegedly bought a large train set and moved to Kilmarnock. The shop was sold to new owners in 1986, and featured a life-size WWF celebrity in the window for most of the 1990's. A fine collection of sweeties, and the town's only stockist of The Guardian on a Saturday.

MacLeod's Table
By Chris Dauten "What a vulgar display of wealth," Alistair snorted as he was escorted through the halls of Edinburgh Castle. The page that led him said nothing. Alistair lurched along behind him, his twisted spine, which had earned him the nickname "Crouchback," not impeding his movement or his speed. The page stopped before a huge set of ornately carved doors, guarded on either side by a soldier of the palace guard. "I will announce you," the page instructed. "You will bow to His Highness, understood?" "Aye." The page signaled for one of the soldiers to draw the doors open, revealing the interior of the King's audience chamber. He then motioned for Alistair to enter. Walking into the chamber, Alistair noted the fancy, Lowland nobles staring at him. He held his head perhaps a little higher than usual while in their presence. The page, just behind him announced in a loud, bellowing voice, "Alistair MacLeod of Dunvegan." Alistair, Chief of the Clan MacLeod, then stepped forward and bowed low to the man seated on the raised throne. "My Lord of Dunvegan," said the King of Scots, "how pleased I am to see a representative of one of my dear Highland Clans." "The pleasure is all Mine, Highness," MacLeod replied, bowing slightly, with no attempt to sound even slightly sincere. For James V to refer to the Highlanders as "dear" was, Alistair felt, an insult. The King's policy had been to suppress the Highland Chiefs, to steal their authority for his own. That authority they were given by the love of their own people. The King sought to hold that authority by royal decree and by force, rather than have it freely given.

Prince of Swords By Anne Stuart, 1996, European Historical Romance (Georgian England)
Zebra, $5.99, ISBN #0-8217-5397-5 Grade: C- Sensuality: Hot
Some of the books I've read lately have made me wonder whether or not I might be suffering from a terminal case of "First as Favorites" syndrome. In fact, after reading Prince of Swords , I sat down with A Rose at Midnight , an earlier book by Anne Stuart, to make sure it was as wonderful as I had remembered. It was, which only made me even less happy with Prince of Swords , which suffers from a hero so unrepentant and just plain bad that the only decent thing about him was his love for the heroine, admitted on the very last page of the book. This ne'er-do-well is the Earl of Glenshiel, Alistair MacAlpin, a catburglar who steals from the rich and gives to the poor - only the poor is himself, which he isn't ... anymore. Oh, I suppose the author thought to make him a bit more palatable in that he only steals from those who can afford it. And, once, he actually did a kind thing for one of his victims. But in general, he has no remorse, for himself, for others, and especially not for the heroine of this tome, impoverished noblewoman Jessamine Maitland, who gets him all hot and bothered with her intriguing eyes and innocence. Frankly, he expects to die and doesn't care a whit about anybody or anything along the way. Jessamine supports herself, her beautiful younger sister, and their mother, by reading Tarot cards for the gentry and for a particularly vicious Bow Street runner who will do anything to catch the "Cat." She knows she must remain pure to retain her psychic skills. That's all right with her - her goal is to marry off her sister to a rich man and retire to the country, away from the filth and poverty of Georgian London.
