Hailed by The New York Times as “a master of the British mystery,” award-winning author Elizabeth George is one of our most distinguished writers, cherished by readers on both sides of the Atlantic. Her first collection of short stories is an extraordinary offering that deftly explores the dark side of everyday peopleand the lengths to which they will go to get what they want most. In these five tantalizing and original tales, George plumbs the depths of human natureand human weaknessas only she can. From the chilling tale of a marriage built on an appalling set of lies that only death can reveal, to the final, title story about a penniless schoolteacher whose ambition turns murderous, I, Richard is filled with page-turning drama, danger, and unmatched suspense.

To view an Elizabeth George Bibliography, click here Elizabeth George was born Susan Elizabeth George in Warren, Ohio. When she was eighteen months old, her family relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where they lived in what's now part of Silicon Valley but was then the small town of Mountain View. There, she was educated at St. Joseph's Grammar School and Holy Cross High School by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. She began her university education at Foothill Community College in Los Altos Hills, and from there she transferred to and graduated from the University of California in Riverside, California, picking up units along the way at UC Berkeley as well. She also attended California State University at Fullerton, where she was awarded a master's degree in Counseling/Psychology and UC Riverside again where she received a lifetime secondary teaching credential. Professionally, she started out as a teacher. She was employed at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana initially, but there she gave in to her bent for organized labor and was summarily fired along with ten other teachers for union activity. When the courts ordered the school to rehire all of the teachers, she was unavailable as she had quickly moved on to El Toro High School in El Toro, California (now called Lake Forest, California), where she remained for the rest of her career as high school English teacher. While employed there, she was selected Orange County Teacher of the Year, a tribute in part to the work she'd done with remedial students for nearly a decade. She left education after thirteen and a half years when she sold her first novel, A Great Deliverance, to her longtime publisher Bantam Books.

Bonne lecture.

Totdat De Dood Ons Scheidt
Oorspronkelijke titel: A Great Deliverance Verschenen in: Vertaling in het Nederlands: Nederlandse uitgever: A.W. Bruna Uitgevers B.V. Beoordeling:

SPEARE, ELIZABETH GEORGE
1908-November 15, 1994
Author Autobiographical sketch written for the 1963 Biography from More Junior Authors: I was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, which seems to me an ideal place in which to have grown up, close to fields and woods where we hiked and picnicked, and near to Boston where we frequently had family treats of theaters and concerts. Every summer we went to the shore, where we stayed on a hill with a breathtaking view of the ocean, with fields and daisies and blue-berries, and lovely secret paths through the woods, but, except for my small brother, not another young person anywhere. As I grew older I realized that those lonely summers had been a special gift for which I would always be grateful. I had endless golden days to read and think and dream, and it was then that I discovered the absorbing occupation of writing stories. I went on writing stories all through high school, but I never again had much time to be alone. I went to Boston University and on to graduate school, and then I taught in Massachusetts high schools. I very much enjoyed teaching English because it was a wonderful opportunity to share the books that I loved and because it was always a thrill to watch some girl or boy discover for the first time the enchantment of reading and writing. I spent vacations as a camp counselor and traveled for one summer in Europe.

Payment in Blood by Elizabeth George Payment in Blood is one of Elizabeth George's popular series of mysteries featuring two central characters; the aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his associate, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers. In this installment, a murder is committed at a remote Scottish hotel, and, despite the fact that it's out of their jurisdiction, Lynley, Havers, and forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James are assigned to the case. Matters get progressively more complicated on a number of levels. First of all, Lynley discovers that a woman he loves is involved, then another murder is committed, and finally a 30-year old political scandal raises its ugly head. Payment in Blood has a number of the trappings of a classics mystery story - a crime committed by one of a small group of definite suspects, virtually all of whom have a fairly strong motive. However, despite its length, the book never induces the kind of boredom that works of that genre are wont to. This is due partly to the fact that George does a decent job of keeping the reader in suspense, and partly to the fact that there is so much more going on than just the solving of the crime. Lynley's emotional turmoil over the involvement of his lady-friend, which eventually impairs his professional judgement, Haver's basic dislike for aristocrats (which impairs
