Ghosh, Amitav The Calcutta Chromosome
Genre Novel (309 pp.) Keywords Acculturation Asian Experience Colonialism Developing Countries ... Time Summary In the not too distant future, the morose Egyptian, Antar, works in New York City, as a home-based computer employee, monitoring artifacts which he can study holographically through cyber space. He conjures up the I.D. card of one L. Murugan, who had supposedly disappeared in Calcutta back in 1995. Murugan is/was an expert on Nobel laureate Ronald Ross, discoverer of the role of the anopheles mosquito in the transmission of malaria. Through flashbacks to the intense week of his disappearance and to episodes in the late nineteenth century, the virtual Murugan roams Calcutta trying desperately to understand and expose a subtext of counter science in Ross's laboratory. He is joined by Urmila, a journalist whose life is endangered by their collaboration. Murugan theorizes that Ross was sloppy, intent on fame and fortune though a simplistic rendering of the parasite-host relationship; his discoveries were fed to him by others and he was blind to the spiritualistic ambitions of Mangala, his Indian laboratory technologist. Conceiving of the powerful significance of malaria prevention and control, Mangala held different views on the purpose and means of investigating the disease and, Murugan thinks, she anticipated the later discovery of another Nobel laureate, J. Wagner-Jauregg, in the use of malaria for the treatment of syphilis. The travels of Murugan and Urmila imply that these views are still there awaiting their own discovery.

THE CALCUTTA CHROMOSOME by Amitav Ghosh
Bard July 1998; $6.99 paperback 306 pp; ISBN: 0-380-79493-4
The modern detective story, as it was invented almost a century ago, has remained fairly constant in its narrative voice even as its subject matter changed with time. Disparate authors, from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Michael Crighton, have experimented with the telling of credible literary mysteries, wielding the methodologies of "investigative anthropology" as essential plot devices. Sherlock Holmes, the classic "detective-protagonist" drives the plot's action by interviewing eyewitnesses as a function of his investigation. His collected anecdotal accounts, considered as a whole, provide the clues needed to solve the mystery. It is a tried-and-true formula, for good reason-because it works. It is twenty-first century New York. An Egyptian bureaucrat named Antar is eking out a living, partnered to a super-computer doomed to sort through massive amounts of data collected on behalf of an international water consortium. It is Antar's fate to deal with the items that the fussy computer cannot identify-a missing ID badge, a deleted e-mail letter, a lost telephone message. Believing that he sees a pattern in the troublesome objects, he abandons the bureaucratic nightmare to investigate the fate of Murugan, an obscure history-of-science scholar who disappeared in Calcutta in 1995. Murugan is obsessed with the centuries-old search for the cure for Malaria and especially with the research conducted by an Indian Army surgeon, Sergeant-Major Ronald Ross. The good doctor Ross, who had previously been known only for the excellence of his polo game, suddenly began producing work worthy of the Nobel Prize. Murugan's question is simple-how could Ross, working alone in a primitive Indian laboratory without access to the latest scientific findings, crack the medical problem of the century?

Aus dem Amerikanischen von Margarete Längsfeld und Sabine Maier-Längsfeld. Birma 1885.
