03:00 AM Sep. 17, 1999 PT Here's how it is in 1999, as James Gleick sees it: "Coffee breaks have gone the way of enforced Sabbaths, and neither transcendental meditation nor the sensory deprivation tank seems likely to replace them."

The "close door" button in your building's elevator probably doesn't work, but makes you feel less anxious in these harried times. Nowadays you only have time for about four minutes of sex a day (about the same amount of time you also spend on some kind of paperwork), and only one hour for eating. Lucky for you, if you live in Tokyo: A buffet restaurant there charges by the minute, not the plate. Of course, you have to wait in line to get in. Even if you can shave off a few precious nanoseconds by speed dialing instead of keying a phone number, or by flossing teeth while browsing the Internet, the saved time can't "be rolled up and exchanged quite as easily as the pennies that accumulate in our pockets" to be used later.

The Alternative To Doubt Is Authority "What makes the planets go around the sun? At the time of Kepler, some people answered this problem by saying that there were angels behind them beating their wings and pushing the planets around an orbit. As you will see, the answer is not very far from the truth. The only difference is that the angels sit in a different direction and their wings push inwards."
A law is not a cause; yet it is more than merely a description. It is true because it is beautiful and simple; yet it is never quite true at all. "That is the same with all of our laws- they are not exact. There is always an edge of mystery, always a place where we have some fiddling around to do yet." Feynman wrestles with these issues throughout this volume, interspersing his philosophical discourse with digs at philosophers. They are like tourists, he says, moving in after the explorers have done thier work and packed up. It was true that the rapid pace of science during the twentieth century especially had often left epistemologists a significant step behind. It was not philosophers who had discovered (or deduced) the impossibility of finding a system of physical laws unambiguously tying effects to causes; the quantum theorists had done that, and philosophers had scrambled to discuss the consequences.

a u t h o r p u b l i s h e r s f e e d b a c k r e v i e w s ... Publishers Weekly The Guardian (Peter Forbes) 11 December 1999 D o you multitask - even off computer? That is, do you invent little micro-routines for yourself, like doing your language lesson just before bed so that you wake up thinking in Italian instead of English? According to James Gleick, we're all doing it: the tasks we want to accomplish need more hours than are available so we have to double up. Increasingly, time management seems to be the core problem of most people's daily existence. Gleick looks at the question from as many angles as he can find and undoubtedly has his finger on the quartz-emission button. He shows that indices such as the speed of cutting in films and adverts or the preferred length of a soundbite (down from 40 seconds for presidential candidates in 1968 to less than 10 seconds in 1988) have all relentlessly accelerated. The nub of the book consists of questions like: why do people punch the fetch-lift and push-to-walk buttons on pedestrian crossings so often? Often they do nothing more than assuage the puncher's anxiety because they're dummies, placebos. Even day-dreaming - a use of time Gleick favours highly - doesn't come easily in these situations. Gleick is a good guide - you can tell he doesn't waste much time. He is in fact the very model of the modern media genius. Nothing fazes him, he has no axe to grind; he sees everything and passes it on entertainingly. His prose style is widely imitated. When he writes about the short shelf-life of books as yet another symptom, you know (and he knows) that his book will be an exception. He writes bestsellers: Chaos, Genius (the life of Richard Feynman), and now this.

This is an article by James Gleick, in today's NYT Magazine. James Gleick's Survival Lessons
The author of Chaos confronts personal tragedy and the meaning of time.
By David Diamond James Gleick is one of America's most popular and lucid science writers, author of the best-sellers Chaos and Genius and of the forthcoming Faster, a widely anticipated look at technology's hurry-up impact on modern life. He's not too keen on face-to-face communications, though, and when I first email him to ask for an interview, his replies are evasive. He is still recuperating from a long hospital stay, he writes back; he is busy writing a book: "With few interruptions, I hope, for the rest of the year, and my point is that this isn't a colorful, two-person activity." Yet, if I insist, I can see him at his place in the country. "You are welcome to ... come visit briefly," he writes. The words don't quite convey the sound of a door slamming. Yes, it looks closed. But I sense Gleick on the other side, his hand on the knob, waiting to see if I will go away.
