Sus padres fueron Juan Jerónimo Godoy Villanueva y Petronila Alcayaga, quienes la bautizaron con el nombre de Lucila. A los quince años empieza a trabajar, ejerciendo una ayudantía en la Escuela de La Compañía, aldea vecina a Vicuña. Teniendo 17 años, conoce a Romelio Ureta, empleado de Ferrocarriles, quien fue el amor de su vida. Durante este período, Lucila sirve una plaza de maestra en la escuela de La Cantera, ya que su profesión fue ser maestra. Para 1908 figura en la antología Literatura coquimbana de L. Carlos Soto Ayala, en la cual éste le dedica un breve estudio y selecciona tres prosas poéticas de la autora: Ensoñación, Junto al mar y Carta íntima.

Sus padres fueron, Jerónimo Godoy Villanueva y Petronila Alcayaga Rojas. Estudió en la escuela de Montegrande. Entre 1905-1906 comenzó a trabajar como ayudante en las escuelas rurales de Compañía Baja y La Cantera, en los alrededores de La Serena. Al año siguiente se le nombra secretaria del Liceo de niñas de La Serena. Carecía del título de profesora, por lo tanto, rindió un "Examen de Competencia" (1912), tras el cual hizo clases en los liceos de niñas de Antofagasta y Los Andes. Se dio a conocer como poeta al ganar los Juegos Florales de Santiago, con sus "Sonetos de la muerte", inspirados en el suicidio de su gran amor, el joven Romelio Ureta, los firmó como "Gabriela Mistral", seudónimo que desde entonces la acompañaría toda su vida.

GABRIELA Y PABLO El Premio Nobel de Literatura que se entrega a los elegidos de las bellas letras en el mundo, lo han obtenido dos chilenos consagrados en nuestra geografía. Ellos son los poetas Gabriela Mistral y Pablo Neruda, norte y sur de nuestra hermosa poesía, la que ha saltado todas las fronteras con los triunfos de estos gladiadores del idioma en este país de los confines. Gabriela Mistral y Pablo Neruda son provincianos y los dos representan a zonas bien definidas de nuestro territorio: mientras Gabriela es del norte mineral y soleado, Pablo es del sur lluvioso y vegetal. Su hermanación en las estrofas viene de la íntima belleza que caracteriza a los paisajes de la tierra y a la calidad humana de sus habitantes. Gabriela Mistral nació en la pequeña ciudad de Vicuña y era hija del profesor de primeras letras Jerónimo Godoy y de la dueña de casa Petronila Alcayaga. Su fecha de nacimiento es el 7 de abril de 1889 y los primeros años de su existencia los pasó en la casa materna, al cuidado de su hermanastra Emelina Alcayaga, quien recibió sus primeras lecciones de lectura y escritura. Por su parte, Pablo Neruda comenzó llamándose Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, y era hijo del conductor de trenes José del Carmen Reyes y de la profesora primaria Rosa Basoalto Opazo. El nacimiento tuvo lugar el 12 de julio de 1904 en la sureña ciudad de Parral y un mes después moría la madre, hecho doloroso que hizo emigrar a Temuco al padre y al pequeño hijo recién nacido.

The daughter of a dilettante poet, she began to write poetry as a village schoolteacher after a passionate romance with a railway employee who committed suicide. She taught elementary and secondary school for many years until her poetry made her famous. She played an important role in the educational systems of Mexico and Chile, was active in cultural committees of the League of Nations, and was Chilean consul in Naples, Madrid, and Lisbon. She held honorary degrees from the Universities of Florence and Guatemala and was an honorary member of various cultural societies in Chile as well as in the United States, Spain, and Cuba.
