Actors between plays are like ghosts
looking for bodies to inhabit.
One is taught by experience to put
a premium on those few people who
can appreciate you for what you are.
Dreams say what they mean, but
they don't say it in daytime language.
Some things...arrive on their own mysterious hour, on their own terms and not yours, to be seized or relinquished forever. Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theater. The act of longing for something will always be more intense than the requiting of it. The best antidote I have found is to yearn for something. As long as you yearn, you can't congeal: there is a forward motion to yearning. I believe that dreams transport us through the underside of our days, and that if we wish to become acquainted with the dark side of what we are, the signposts are there, waiting for us to translate them. If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living

Evensong Gail Godwin Book Description
Evensong - To read Gail Godwin is to touch the very core of human experience. With inimitable grace and aching emotional precision, this New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award nominee probes our own complexities in characters whose lives oscillate between success and struggle, stoic resolve and quixotic temptation, bitter disappointment and small, sacred joy. Now, in her first novel since The Good Husband, Godwin again translates our everyday existence into soul-touching truths as she brings to brilliantly realized life the people of a small Smoky Mountain townand a woman whose world is indelibly altered by them. At the advent of the new millennium, the residents of High Balsam are in desperate need of hope. Economic and social unrest has led to tragedy. For Margaret Bonner, the young pastor of High Balsam's Episcopal church, care of the community is her constant challenge and devotion. But now, into Margaret's well-ordered life, come three strangersa firebrand female evangelist with a haunted past; an elderly, itinerant man whose visit to this quiet hamlet may be no accident; and a troubled boy who Margaret's husband, headmaster of a progressive, local school, is determined to save. Soon these explosive personalities will ignite a conflagration in Margaret's marriage and in the depths of her very soul.

Gail Godwin: A Leap of Faith in a New Novel by John F. Baker 2/15/1999
"Do you know of any couples in literature where the reader likes both equally?" Perhaps out of nostalgia for her native North Carolina mountains, Gail Godwin lives in Woodstock, N.Y., in a big new house on a hilltop with a sweeping view of the Hudson Valley and an approach road so precipitous that grown men on icy winter afternoons have been known to turn pale, their hands frozen to the steering wheel. It was on just such a recent afternoon, with a sudden snow squall leaving a glistening layer on that treacherous road, that

'Evensong' by Gail Godwin Godwin plumbs marriage, faith Sunday, March 07, 1999 By Rebecca Sodergren Evensong By Gail Godwin Ballantine Books
Gail Godwin is back, as good as ever. Unlike the John Grishams of the world, who churn out a book a year but lose some depth in the process, Godwin has been on a five-year hiatus since publishing “The Good Husband” in 1994. You can’t expect a writer of this depth to crank out books at record speed unless you ask her to sacrifice quality. Godwin obviously is not willing to do so. For that, she’s gained a following — not as large as Grisham’s, but perhaps more intense. Those who follow her will be particularly interested to hear that her latest book is a sequel to “Father Melancholy’s Daughter,” her acclaimed 1991 novel. In that book, Margaret Gower was growing up motherless as the daughter of a small-town Episcopal priest. Her mother had run off to New York City with a friend who, of all things, designed theater pieces that mocked the church.

Summary Analysis of Gail Godwin's "A Sorrowful Woman" All day long she stayed in the white room. She was a young queen, a virgin in a tower; she was the previous inhabitant, the girl with all the energies. She tried these personalities on like costumes, then discarded them. The room had a new view of the streets she'd never seen that way before. The sun hit the room in late afternoon and she took to brushing her hair in the sun. One day she decided to write a poem. "Perhaps a sonnet." She took up a pen and pad and began working from words that had lately lain in her mind. She had choices for the sonnet, ABAB or ABBA for a start. She pondered these possibilities until she tottered into a larger choice: she did not have to write a sonnet. Her poem could be six, eight, ten, thirteen lines, it could be any number of lines, and it did not even have to rhyme. She put down the pen on top of the pad.

RIT: Writing and Literature I
All day long she stayed in the white room. Gail Godwin's short story "A Sorrowful Woman" revolves around a wife and mother who becomes overwhelmed with her husband and child and withdraws from them, gradually shutting them completely out of her life. Unsatisfied with her role as dutiful mother and wife, she tries on other roles, but finds that none of them satisfy her either. She is accustomed to a specific role, and has a difficult time coping when a more extensive array of choices is presented to her. This is made clear in this section of the story.
