as is seen in the symphony, and perhaps stifi more in the quintet for pianoforte and strings above referred to. The most important of Goetz’s posthumous works are a setting of the 13 7th Psalm for soprano solo, chorus and orchestra, a “Spring” overture (Op. Is), and a pianoforte sonata for four hands (Op. 17). GOFFER, to give a fluted or crimped appearance to anything, particularly to linen or lace frills or trimmings by means of heated irons of a special shape, called goffering-irons or tongs. Goffering,” or the French term gauf rage, is also used of the wavey or crimped edging in certain forms of porcelain, an~ also of the stamped or embossed decorations on the edges of the binding of. books. The French word gaufre, from which the English form is adapted, means a thin cake marked with a pattern like a honeycomb, a “wafer,” which is etymologically the same word. Waufre appears in the phrase un fer a waufres, an iron for baking cakes on (quotation of 1433 in J. B. Roquefort’s Glossaire de la langue romane). The word is Teutonic, ci. Dutch wafel, Ger. Wa~ffei, a form seen in “ waffle,” the name given to the well-known batter-cakes of America. The “wafer” was so called from its likeness to a honeycomb, Wabe, ultimately derived from the root wab-, to weave, the cells of the comb appearing to be woven together. GOG (possibly connected with the Gentilic Gagaya, “ of the land of Gag,” used in Amarna Letters 1. 38, as a synonym for “barbarian,” or with Ass. Gugu, a king of Lydia)~ a Hebrew name found in Ezek. xxxviii.-xxxix. and in Rev. xx., and denoting an antitheocratic power that is to manifest itself in the world immediately before ‘the final dispensation. In the later passage, Gog and Magog are spoken of as co-ordinate; in the earlier, Gog is given as the name of the person or people and Magog as that of the land of origin. Magog is perhaps a contracted form of Mat-gog, mat being the common Assyrian word for “land.” The passages are, however, intimately related

Gogol, Nikolai Vasilyevich 1809-52, Russian short-story writer, novelist, and playwright, sometimes considered the father of Russian realism. Of Ukrainian origin, he first won literary success with fanciful and romantic tales of his native Ukraine in Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka (1831-32). His next stories, in Mirgorod The Overcoat (1842), about a downtrodden clerk who sacrifices much to buy a new overcoat that is stolen the first time he wears it. As a dramatist Gogol's fame rests on The Inspector-General (1836), a satire on provincial officials. Petty vice and human folly are caricatured in this as in all his mature work. His picaresque novel Dead Souls (1842) concerns the rogue Chichikov who buys the names of dead serfs from landowners in order to mortgage them as property. This work is the culmination of Gogol's gift for caricature, imagery, and invention. Haunted throughout his life by moral and religious problems, and adverse criticism from his contemporaries, his powers declined as he attempted to write a second part to his novel, embodying positive spiritual values. In a frenzy he destroyed the manuscript; greatly depressed, his health ruined by fanatical fasting, he died shortly thereafter. Gogol's work is realistic in its concern for rich detail, but he is famed primarily for creating a fantastic world of the imagination. Most of his works have been translated into English.

    Summation
Evidence supporting the possibility that Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was in fact a misunderstood transsexual is widespread and varied. From his close relationship with his mother and ongoing obsession with rich fabrics, embroidery and women's clothing, to his specific attraction to heterosexual men and assumption of female household roles, there are several aspects of his biographical information which support this hypothesis. In terms of literary evidence, analysis of several characters and character types demonstrates commonalities with modern transsexuals. These range from a "castration desire" and aversion to being identified as a penis-possessor, to a simultaneous glorification and resentment of women. In combination, these examples of biographic and literary evidence may not provide definitive proof, yet they do not rule out the possibility that Gogol was, in fact, transsexual. Sources Cited

    Gogol, Nikolai
Russian writer, whose plays, short stories, and novels rank among the great masterpieces of 19th-century Russian realist literature.
Gogol was born March 20, 1809, in Sorochintsy, Mirgorod, Poltava Province, of cossack parents. In 1828 he went to Saint Petersburg, where he eventually secured employment in the civil service and became known in literary circles. Enthusiastic praise greeted his volume of short stories of Ukrainian life, Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka (1831). Then followed another collection, Mirgorod (1835), containing "Taras Bulba," which was expanded in 1842 into a full-length novel; this work, dealing with 16th-century cossack life, revealed the writer's great ability for accurate and sympathetic character portrayal and his sparkling humor.
In 1836 Gogol's play The Inspector General appeared. A rollicking satire on the cupidity and stupidity of bureaucratic officials, it is a comedy of errors regarded by many critics as one of the most significant plays in Russian literature. It concerns the local officials of a small town who mistake a young traveler for an expected government inspector and offer him propitiatory bribes to induce him to overlook their misconduct in office.
Chichikov's travels provide the occasion for profound reflections on the degrading and stultifying influence of serfdom on both owner and serf. The work also contains a large number of brilliantly depicted Russian provincial types. Dead Souls exerted an enormous influence on succeeding generations of Russian writers. Many of the witty sayings expressed in its pages have become Russian maxims.
