Stephen Jay Gould Stephen Jay Gould è cresciuto a New York.
  • Ontogey and Philogeny The Mismeasure of Man Il sorriso del fenicottero La freccia del tempo, il ciclo del tempo. Gould was first and foremost a scientist. His immediate research area, the evolution of land snails, might seem quaint to some, but his impact transcended those bounds. Most scientists, and others as well, knew him as a bold thinker and synthesizer unafraid to ruffle feathers, particularly with his Punctuated Equilibrium hypothesis. Together with Niles Eldredge of the American Museum of Natural History, Gould tried to explain why species suddenly change in the fossil record. The jumps were real rather than illusory, they argued, and not the product of poor preservation of intermediate forms. Searching for such forms was pointless because they don't exist. Instead, much of evolution is characterized by static periods in which organisms don't change, interspersed with rapid speciation events. Published in 1972, the hypothesis pitted Gould against gradualists adhering to traditional Darwinian explanations. It may seem more like a molehill than a mountain now, but at the time debate over the idea was pretty heated. "It was shocking in '72," says evolutionary ecologist Massimo Pigliucci of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. "It sparked a lot of papers," and that's why "it was one of the most important papers of the 20th century," he concludes. In a way, Gould prefaced such advances. Gould, Stephen Jay
US palaeontologist and writer. In 1972 he proposed the theory of punctuated equilibrium, suggesting that the evolution of species did not occur at a steady rate but could suddenly accelerate, with rapid change occurring over a few hundred thousand years. His books include Ever Since Darwin 1977, The Panda's Thumb 1980, The Flamingo's Smile 1985, and Wonderful Life 1990.
Gould was born in New York and studied at Antioch College, Ohio, and Columbia University. He became professor of geology at Harvard 1973 and was later also given posts in the departments of zoology and the history of science.
Gould has written extensively on several aspects of evolutionary science, in both professional and popular books. His Ontogeny and Phylogeny 1977 provided a detailed scholarly analysis of his work on the developmental process of recapitulation. In Wonderful Life he drew attention to the diversity of the fossil finds in the Burgess Shale Site in Yoho National Park, Canada, which he interprets as evidence of parallel early evolutionary trends extinguished by chance rather than natural selection.

Evolutionary theorist Stephen Jay Gould, shown during a 1999 appearance on NBC's "Today" show, died of cancer Monday. An evolutionary
champion dies at 60 Stephen Jay Gould wrote
about nature, millennium, baseball

MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
‘Science is not a heartless pursuit of objective information. It is a creative human activity, its geniuses acting more as artists than as information processors.’
STEPHEN JAY GOULD
Gould was not just a popularizer of science; he challenged his colleagues with revolutionary ideas about evolution.
As graduate students at Columbia University in the early 1970s, Gould and Niles Eldredge, now a curator of invertebrate paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History, ignited a scientific debate that continues today. For a century, scientists had viewed evolution the way Darwin did, as an incredibly slow process that could only result in dramatic change over eons.
But in their studies of fossil land snail shells in Bermuda, Gould and Eldredge thought they saw a different pattern. They saw bursts of change, relatively rapid on the geologic time scale, interspersed with long periods of stasis.
BASEBALL TO PANDAS Technically his field was fossils, but Gould taught geology, biology, zoology and the history of science, and wrote about everything from chocolate bars to baseball to the millennium.
